HONG KONG (AP) — Pet cats and dogs cannot pass the new coronavirus on to humans, but they can test positive for low levels of the pathogen if they catch it from their owners. That's the conclusion of Hong Kong's Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department after a dog in quarantine tested weakly positive for the virus Feb. 27, Feb. 28 and March 2, using the canine's nasal and oral cavity samples. A unidentified spokesman for the department was quoted in a news release as saying. "There is currently no evidence that pet animals can be a source of infection of COVID-19 or that they become sick." Scientists suspect the virus known as SARS-CoV-2 that causes the disease originated in bats before passing it on to another species, possibly a small wild mammal, that passed it on to humans. However, experts from the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong, the College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences of the City University of Hong Kong and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) have unanimously agreed that the dog has a low-level of infection and it is "likely to be a case of human-to-animal transmission." The dog, and another also in quarantine which has tested negative for the virus, will be tested again before being released. The department suggested any pets, including dogs and cats, from households where someone has tested positive for the virus should be put into quarantine. In general, pet owners should maintain good hygiene, including washing hands before and after handling animals, their food and supplies and no kissing them. People who are sick should avoid contact with pets and a veterinarian's advice should be sought if changes in a pet's health conditions are detected. "Apart from maintaining good hygiene practices, pet owners need not be overly concerned and under no circumstances should they abandon their pets," the spokesman said. 1919

Five months ago, Brendan Bialy was sitting in his 12th-grade English class at a Colorado high school when a fellow student walked in late, holding a gun.Bialy, along with two other classmates, charged and disarmed the alleged shooter. Now, the heroic student is a United States Marine. The Castle Rock, Colorado, native graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Training in San Diego on Sept. 20.Bialy was an aspiring Marine even before the May 7 shooting that happened at STEM School Highlands Ranch, and the tragedy only made him pursue his goal harder."Honestly, my thoughts on becoming a Marine were nothing but reinforced after the shooting," Bialy said in a video shared by the Marine Corps. "What I saw that day was complete and total malevolence, bad, overcome by good. And I lost an amazing person. The world lost an amazing person — Kendrick Castillo."Students Joshua Jones and Castillo also helped disarm the suspected school shooter. Castillo, an 18-year-old senior who was just days away from graduating, was killed. After Castillo was shot, Bialy said he kept the gun away from the suspect and helped a teacher perform chest compressions on Castillo. But Castillo didn't respond.Jones was shot twice but lived. Bialy said that he "saw that benevolence won, legitimately and completely won in that situation." He added that joining the Marines helped him build on a moral foundation he knew he had because of how he reacted in the shooting. The moral foundation Bialy spoke of was the same character he showed during his training, his instructor said."I noticed through some events of training that his past kind of reflected on some things we had to do here: quick reaction, willingness to fight, his character really showed," said Staff Sgt. Chestnut, Bialy's training instructor.According to the Marine Corps, Bialy graduated as a platoon honor man and earned a meritorious promotion to private first class. 1928

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A grandmother in Hillsborough County, Florida, is facing several charges after she caused a crash that killed her 10-month-old granddaughter, according to Florida Highway Patrol. According to an accident report, Helen Mention, 50, was drunk when she crashed into a guardrail on Friday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. Her blood alcohol level was .225, FHP says. That's nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08. Troopers say Mention was driving with 10-month-old Harlem Mention on her lap. She was turning from Mango Road onto westbound I-4 when she crashed into a guardrail. Harlem was taken to Tampa General with critical injuries. She died a few days later on Oct. 28, according to FHP. Mention was arrested Monday and charged with DUI manslaughter, aggravated manslaughter of a child, careless driving and a violation of Florida's child restraint law. 883
