SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Metropolitan Transit System trolley in San Ysidro, police said Friday.The crash happened shortly before 11:40 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Beyer Boulevard and Smythe Avenue, San Diego police Sgt. Michael Stirk said. The intersection is just northeast of the Beyer Boulevard Trolley Station.The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, Stirk said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego physician already facing a federal mail fraud charge for allegedly selling a false COVID-19 cure has been indicted on new charges of impersonating one of his employees to obtain hydroxychloroquine, making false statements to investigators and importing what he believed was hydroxychloroquine smuggled out of China, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Thursday.Dr. Jennings Ryan Staley, 44, who formerly operated Skinny Beach Med Spas in and around San Diego, was indicted on the latest charges Wednesday by a federal grand jury. In addition to mail fraud, he's now charged in a superseding indictment with importation contrary to law, making false statements, and aggravated identity theft.Staley was originally charged earlier this year for allegedly marketing and selling pricey "COVID-19 treatment packs," described as a "concierge medicine experience" priced as high as ,995 for a family of four. Prosecutors allege he paid roughly per tablet of hydroxychloroquine included in the kits.The U.S. Attorney's Office said Staley's marketing materials stated customers should "NOT BELIEVE THE REPORTS THAT HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE DOESN'T WORK!" and he allegedly told an undercover FBI agent who posed as a customer that the purported treatment was a "magic bullet" and a "miracle cure."When asked whether the treatment kit would cure someone infected with COVID-19, he allegedly said, "One hundred percent," but later denied ever making the claim.The U.S. Attorney's Office alleges he tried to solicit investments for his COVID-19 cure venture, telling one customer and prospective investor that he sought a ,000 minimum investment and aimed to raise 0,000 total. He allegedly promised the customer that she would be repaid "triple your money in 90 days."Prosecutors allege Staley obtained hydroxychloroquine pills in several ways, including by soliciting them from acquaintances and employees with preexisting hydroxychloroquine prescriptions, and writing prescriptions for immediate family members and acquaintances to get the drugs "by any means necessary."He allegedly wrote a fake hydroxychloroquine prescription using the name, date of birth and prior home address of one of his employees, and took the prescription to multiple pharmacies in an attempt to obtain the drug. He also allegedly pretended to be her while ordering pills online.The U.S. Attorney's Office said Staley falsely claimed to investigators that the employee had allowed him to use her pre-existing medical condition to get hydroxychloroquine tablets.Staley also allegedly tried to obtain hydroxychloroquine through a Chinese supplier by lying to customs officials about a shipment coming into the U.S.While Staley believed the mislabeled "yam extract" package contained hydroxychloroquine powder, it actually only contained baking soda, the U.S Attorney's Office said.Prosecutors say he planned to make his own hydroxychloroquine tablets using the powder he believed he'd obtained."People must be able to trust their doctors to offer honest medical advice instead of a fraudulent sales pitch, especially during a global pandemic," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman driving on a suspended license who had more than three times the legal blood-alcohol limit when she crashed her SUV head-on into another vehicle while driving her three young daughters through Rancho Bernardo was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in state prison. Mayra Alejandra Gonzalez, 30, -- on probation for a prior DUI -- had a .29% blood-alcohol content when she drove on the wrong side of Camino del Norte Nov. 12, 2018. Her SUV crashed head-on into an oncoming 2011 Jeep Liberty, causing severe injuries -- including a skull fracture and a brain bleed -- to her 9- month-old daughter, who was riding unrestrained. The defendant's 2-year-old daughter suffered facial injuries and her 8-year-old daughter broke a bone. The 57-year-old driver of the other car suffered broken bones and underwent five surgeries to treat his injuries. She crashed into a signpost and a parked car, and backed into a wall prior to the crash that led to her conviction, the prosecutor said. ``She put alcohol and what she wanted to do above the safety of her children and the safety of the community,'' McCarthy told the court. Considering the condition of her then-9-month-old, who still uses a feeding tube to this day as a result of the crash, McCarthy said ``It's a miracle (Gonzalez) is not here on a murder charge.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - City officials broke ground Monday on the Bay Terraces Senior Center, a project that local residents have advocated for since the 1990s. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilmembers Monica Montgomery and Chris Cate were on hand to mark the beginning of construction on the 3,400-square-foot facility. Once completed, the million senior center is set to include amenities such as a multipurpose room and a commercial kitchen. The facility will serve seniors in Paradise Hills, Bay Terraces and Skyline, according to the city. ``A decade ago, city leaders laid down a thin layer of gravel in preparation for a senior center in southeastern San Diego that was promised but never delivered,'' Faulconer said. ``Today we are making good on that promise and building a center that will be as great as the communities it will serve.'' Faulconer revived the project in 2016 and city officials expect it to be the city's first building to produce as much energy as it uses by leveraging solar panels on the facility's roof. According to the city, the project is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant program. ``This project illustrates the hard work and power of our community to organize and hold elected officials accountable,'' Montgomery said. ``We are pleased to see the Bay Terraces Senior Center start construction and we look forward to the grand opening and visiting the center for many years to come.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Officials Thursday publicly identified a woman whose body was found floating in Mission Bay last weekend.A visitor to Fiesta Island made an emergency call shortly after 6:30 a.m. Saturday to report spotting 36-year-old Anita Teres dead in the waters of the manmade harbor south of Pacific Beach, according to San Diego police.``Although there were no obvious traumatic injuries seen (on) the victim, due to the circumstances and the condition of the body ... homicide investigators were called to the scene out of an abundance of caution,'' Lt. Matt Dobbs said. ``Very little is known about the victim or the circumstances surrounding the death at this time.''Authorities have been unable to locate any next of kin for Teres, who was known to frequent Fiesta Island, downtown San Diego, La Mesa and various local trolley stops, according to police. 874
