BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China said on Tuesday it would punish six companies, including affiliates of the country's two oil giants, for selling diesel above the state-set prices, in an effort to ease the diesel shortage and keep soaring prices in check.The companies, including Sinopec's units in Wuhan and Luoyang, and PetroChina's Wuhan unit, were selling diesel at prices as high as 8 percent above the government set price, according to a statement posted on the website of National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner.These companies also included local refineries and oil dealers in Shaanxi, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces and according to the NDRC, the acts have exacerbated the diesel shortage and disrupted market order.The commission urged local authorities to seize the illicit revenue from above-ceiling sales and fine the companies up to five-times of their income.To relieve domestic diesel shortages, both Sinopec and PetroChina are increasing diesel imports, while Sinopec said last week it had even suspended diesel exports.According to customs statistics, China's diesel imports in October rose to 400,000 tonnes, surging 60 percent compared with that in September.

BERLIN, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China and Germany will ink 8.7 billion U.S. dollars worth of business deals during Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Germany, Chinese Ambassador to Germany Wu Hongbo said here on Friday.Wu said at a press conference that Li was accompanied by some 120 Chinese business leaders on his current visit. The two sides are expected to sign 11 agreements and commercial contracts worth some 8.7 billion dollars, covering such fields as automobile purchase, financial cooperation, energy and machinery.Earlier on Friday, Li met with German President Christian Wulff and then held talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel.Li told the German leaders that China is a long-term and responsible player in European financial markets. China has increased its holdings of, and will continue to buy Spanish government bonds.Li said China viewed Europe as an important partner and would like to see a prosperous Europe.Li, who started his four-day official visit to Germany on Thursday, is due to meet with German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle in the afternoon and attend a signing ceremony of the business deals between the two countries.

In the article, Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, called for an education and practice campaign in 2011 to foster a politically steadfast, professionally competent and impartial law-enforcement force with a superior work style. CHONGQING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Environmental sanitation workers from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality have collected 78,000 tonnes of garbage from the Yangtze River near the Three Gorges Dam, ensuring the dam's safe and effective operation after its water level was raised.More than 68,000 workers in nearly 21,000 boats retrieved the garbage.In late October, the water level in the dam was lifted to its designed maximum of 175 meters, allowing the dam to play its full flood control, power generation, navigation and water supply roles, said Wang Yuankai, a Chongqing municipal work administrator.Raising the dam's water level increased the surface area of water in the dam. It also increased garbage collectors' workload, with about 60 percent more garbage appearing.The cleanup operation helped ensure the water quality of the dam and its navigability.The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest water-control and hydropower project.
