BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's banking regulator on Tuesday said the banking industry, pillar of the nation's financial system, has an important role to play in transforming the country's economic growth pattern as it highlighted four areas in boosting the process.Jiang Dingzhi, vice chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, on Tuesday urged more efforts be made by the nation's banking sector in expanding consumption-related loans amid the government calling to boost domestic consumption.More channels should be opened to meet the varied consumption needs from residents as financial support should lean on the construction of affordable housing. Loans to property developers who make small and medium-sized homes at medium and low prices should be met, but be restricted to them for speculative purposes, Jiang said. Also, the structure of bank credit should be further optimized in line with the restructuring of the nation's economy, Jiang said at an industrial forum held here Tuesday. This could mean polluting and energy-intensive companies may face more difficulties in obtaining loans from banks.Meanwhile, Jiang urged banks to improve their financial services in the rural areas in China as part of the coordinated development between the rural and urban areas.Further, Jiang said banks should work to improve the availability of financial support for small-sized companies and low-income residents.Jiang said total outstanding bank loans to small-sized companies stood at 7.1 trillion yuan (1.1 trillion U.S. dollars) by the end of September, an increase of 22.3 percent, or 1.3 trillion yuan, compared to the beginning of the year. The growth rate was higher than the average 14.5 percent increase of new loans for all companies during the period, Jiang said.

NEW YORK, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- For Lin Xuewen, secretary-general of United Chinese Associations of Eastern U.S., "incredible" is the best word to describe his experiences at the Shanghai World Expo."It was incredible to see the video played in the multimedia exhibition of the China Pavilion about China's vast migration from rural to urban areas over the past 30 years. I felt so overwhelmed by the incredible changes as if I was riding a time machine. Truly amazing," recalled Lin.Lin has been living in New York for more than three decades. He went to China to attend the Shanghai Expo in May. He said the rapid urban development in Shanghai was "incredible.""Look at the skyscrapers along the streets and skyline at night. It is even better than the New York City night view," he said. The biennial Expo opened on May 1 in Shanghai for a six-month run under the theme of "Better City, Better Life," with some 190 countries and 50 international organizations participating. The number of visitors to the Shanghai World Expo has exceeded 70 million, breaking the previous record set during the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan, which attracted 64 million people. The China Pavilion, named "The Crown of the East," has become increasingly popular since the opening of the World Expo, with a daily average of 50,000 visitors.

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Saturday wrapped up a fruitful visit to France, opening a new chapter in the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. With Hu's three-day visit to France, which started on Thursday, the heads of state and top legislators of the two countries have visited each other's country within one year for the first time.Earlier this year, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Bernard Accoyer, speaker of the French National Assembly, visited China. China's top legislator Wu Bangguo has also visited France recently.Such a frequent exchange of visits has been rare in the history of bilateral relations.During his stay in France, Hu met Sarkozy on at least five occasions and the two leaders held in-depth consultations on issues concerning bilateral ties and major global affairs. The frequency of their meetings in less than 48 hours reveals the high importance both sides have attached to this visit. On Thursday, China and France issued a joint statement, pledging to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. The statement stressed that China and France, both permanent members of the UN Security Council and big economies in the world arena, shoulder special responsibilities, and China-France relations should continue to play an exemplary role. The two sides should establish a new type of partnership and should also deepen their cooperation in international affairs to jointly deal with major global threats, especially the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery, said the statement. They should also work together to address such hotspot issues as Iran's nuclear program, the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the conflict in Afghanistan, it added. The two sides have also reached consensus on such issues as fighting protectionism, combating climate change, supporting Africa's economic growth and advancing China-EU relations.During Hu's visit, China and France signed a number of cooperation agreements, covering a wide range of areas such as nuclear energy, aviation, finance, energy efficiency, environmental protection, climate change and culture.According to French media's estimates, the total value of the trade and cooperation agreements signed between the two nations during Hu's visit could reach 20 billion euros (about 28.1 billion U.S. dollars).

SHANGHAI, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao declared the closure of the World Expo 2010 at the Expo Culture Center in Shanghai Sunday night.A ceremony was held here to celebrate the end of the Expo, which International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE) President Jean-Pierre Lafon called an "astounding success."The first of its kind staged in a developing country, the event attracted 246 participating countries and international organizations and 73 million visitors. Both figures are records in the history of expos, the first of which was held in London in 1851.On an area of 5.28 square kilometers, the Expo Site has become a global village where people can not only see rare cultural treasures from around the world -- the bronze chariot and horse sculpture from China's Warring States period, the statue of Athena from Greece and French impressionist masterpieces, for example -- but also get a taste of the diversity of the world's cultures through more than 20,000 cultural events. The gala is eyed in China as another event of national splendor after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games showcased China's status as an economic and political power to the world.
