(KGTV) - A potentially flammable sea flare washed ashore at La Jolla Shores Tuesday, leading to a San Diego Fire-Rescue Bomb Squad investigation.A person who was walking on the beach near Kellogg Park found the flare canister and took it to the lifeguard station. The witness did not notify lifeguards, who found it about 3 p.m.Lifeguard Lt. Rich Stropky said the flare had not been detonated and still posed a danger, despite the presence of water in the canister.The device appears to be similar to an MK 58 Mod 1 marine location marker. An online description indicates the marker is designed to be a smoke and flames reference-point marker on the ocean’s surface. It is used for antisubmarine warfare, search-and-rescue operations, man-overboard markings, and as a target for practice bombings.The bomb squad reached out to the military Tuesday for guidance in the emergency. Troops from MCAS Miramar were called to the scene to investigate. Shortly after 8 p.m. Marines had removed the device and cleared the scene. There were no reports of injuries. 1089

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KMGH) -- Police in Colorado say a couple accused of using stolen credit cards to rack up thousands of dollars in fraudulent charges had no problem bringing two young kids along."People using their children to shoplift, it's not something we see a lot of, but it's always very disappointing," said Mark Techmeyer, a spokesperson with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.Deputies said the unidentified couple stole a purse from a woman's car that was unlocked in the parking lot at Fairmont Elementary School in Lakewood. It happened on Sept. 15 around 3:30 p.m. local time.Within minutes of stealing the purse, investigators said the suspects began using the victim's credit cards."It happens very fast because they know the cards get canceled really quick," Techmeyer said.Deputies said the couple used the stolen cards to go on a three-day spending spree, fraudulently buying liquor, clothes, electronics, gas and food.Surveillance photos from a Kohl's store in Arvada showed the couple's two young kids with them as they checked out. In one of the photos, one of the kids is holding a shopping bag."It's a deplorable act," Techmeyer said.The duo with kids in tow then hit Mile High Wine Cellars, a liquor store next door.Owner Mark Crowder said their receipt for charges included Angry Orchard Cider, Ciroc Vodka, and expensive Cognac."She reported it stolen and then the charges continued," Techmeyer explained.Investigators said an error with the bank allowed the couple to keep using the stolen cards over three days, racking up nearly ,000 in fraudulent charges.Police are now hoping someone recognizes the couple in the surveillance photos."If there are any other charges that may surround having the children with them while they committed these acts is yet to be determined," Techmeyer said. 1872

LA JOLLA (CNS) - Two passengers riding in a speeding car died today when the vehicle hit a palm tree on Girard Avenue, police said.The crash happened at 3:16 a.m. when the driver of a Nissan Altima was speeding westbound on 1000 Torrey Pines Road, said Officer Dino Delimitros of the San Diego Police Department.The 26-year-old man driving the Altima made a left turn onto 7500 Girard Ave., lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a palm tree, the officer said.Two male passengers, ages 19 and 21, received major injuries and died at the scene, Delimitros said.The injured driver was taken to a hospital and will be held on suspicion of driving under the influence, the officer said. 696

(KGTV) - A Jamul mother is worried the remote learning designed to keep her daughter safe during the pandemic, is making her sick.When 11-year-old Amelia started the school year with distance learning in mid-August, her daily computer screen time went from one to two hours, to seven to eight hours. Her mother Renee says Amelia's school has since offered a hybird option. Now Amerila does remote learning three days a week. Around the beginning of October, Renee says her daughter started complaining about her eyes."She started to come to me with, 'My eyes are tired. I want to scratch my eyes,'" said Renee.Within the past week, those symptoms have gotten worse."She started saying she was lightheaded, uncomfortable in front of the screen. Started feeling constant headaches," said Renee.Renee shared details on a neighborhood Facebook page and learned her daughter wasn't alone."Found out a lot of community members are facing the same challenges with their children," said Renee.Locally and across the county, as school districts have turned to remote learning and all that uninterrupted screen time, complaints of visual fatigue have continued to grow."It's frustrating. I feel helpless. I also want her to be healthy and stay focused. I also don't her to fall behind. She loves school," said Renee.Amelia's pediatrician prescribed ibuprofen, which hasn't helped. A few days ago, Renee purchased blue-light blocking glasses for her daughter. Renee says the eye fatigue has gotten better but the headaches remain.Dr. David Granet, Professor of Ophthalmology & Pediatrics, UC San Diego School of Medicine, offered this advice when it comes to remote learning:"Health problems connected with spending many hours at a time or in a day looking at a computer monitor or TV screen is a global issue, especially where schools are currently shut down and students are spending class hours online. There are immediate and longer-term effects.First, there is the issue of eyestrain. Looking at something up close, like a monitor, requires effort. The muscles of the eyes have to work hard to focus. Younger people may have a greater ability to do that, but it still takes effort, which can lead to headaches, blurry vision when the muscles tire, or dry and itchy eyes because you’re not blinking enough.Then there is the issue of how you’re looking at the screen. Are you hunched over a laptop? Hanging your head out and forward puts a great strain on the neck and back. It creates posture issues.A simple part of the remedy involves the 20-20-20 rule: After 20 minutes of looking at a screen, look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. That gives your eyes time to relax and recover. This is one of the times when we want kids to gaze outside the window! There are many ways to remember to do this, such as setting a timer or bookmarking ahead in an e-book.Kids need to get up and away from screens to help prevent longer-term issues. For example, there is a growing epidemic of myopia, near-sightedness caused by too many years spent staring at close objects, like computer screens. It’s happening around the world.Excessive screen time is also linked to rising rates of childhood obesity, impaired sleep quality, and behavioral changes. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A woman is recovering after being shot in the leg by a man she’d been out with Wednesday night.She was shot on the Plaza, but the Kansas City Police Department said the incident began in another part of town. They said a man and the victim were in his car when he started firing his gun from the car.The woman got out and ran to her car, which was parked on the Plaza.Police said the man drove by and shot her through her car door.She was taken to the hospital. The gunman left the scene and went to his home in Lee’s Summit, where local police arrested him and took him to the KCPD jail.KPCD said it’s unclear why the suspect began shooting in the first place.The woman was shot right outside The Granfalloon. 752
