(CNS) -- An online petition urging a delay of the scheduled reopening of the Disneyland Resort due to the risk of guests contracting coronavirus has acquired more than 26,000 signatures as of this weekend.The change.org petition was started by a user called "We Are Anonymous" and states that because COVID-19 cases are rising, Disneyland Resort is "endangering cast members and guests to be exposed to (coronavirus)" with its planned reopening of Disneyland and California Adventure on July 17. The Downtown Disney shopping district is scheduled to reopen July 9."There are more cases now than when the parks closed on March 13th, 2020," the petition said. "Health Officials have stated that the 2nd wave of Covid-19 will be worse. ANDERSON, Ind. -- A mother and stepfather in Indiana are accused of locking their children in a basement without food, water or a place to go to the bathroom.Connie and her husband Javier Campos were arrested over the weekend and charged with four counts of neglect of a dependent. The investigation began back in November 2017 when a 13-year-old boy ran away from home and was found at a local hotel. At the time, the investigator contacted the Department of Child Services because he believed the children may be in need of services. According to court documents, the couple had four children living in their home ages 13, 11, 10 and 8.The children told investigators that their mother and step-father would lock three of them in the basement of their home any time the adults would leave the house or go to bed.The children described using a bucket and bottle if they needed to go to the bathroom or holding it until morning. “You go before, hold it or it sucks to be you,” the 13-year-old child told investigators.Each of the children had a bed in their upstairs bedrooms, according to court documents, but they were only there “in case CPS came then they would think we sleep there.” 1217
An officer has been dismissed following the shooting of an unarmed Black man in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday.Columbus Police said that the man was 47 years old, and that the man was holding a cell phone at the time of his death, based on a review of one of the responding officer's body-worn camera footage. Police said the man walked toward the officer with a cell phone in his left hand while his right hand was not visible. Officers were called to the area for a report of a man sitting in an SUV, continually turning on and off the vehicle. Officials have not released the name of the person killed, as of Tuesday afternoon. WCMH-TV reported that the officer who fired the fatal shot was Adam Coy, an 18-year veteran of the Columbus Police. According to the Columbus Dispatch, Coy was involved in an excessive force complaint that resulted in the City of Columbus paying a ,000 payout. Coy was suspended for 160 hours for the 2012 incident, but kept his job. The shooting was the second time a citizen was killed by law enforcement within the city. Three weeks ago, Casey Goodson Jr. was shot and killed by Franklin County Sheriff Deputy Jason Meade. Authorities said that investigators recovered a weapon on the scene, but a family attorney told CNN that Goodson was holding a sandwich at the time of the shooting. No charges have been filed in that case, and investigation is still ongoing.“We are still raw from the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and less than 3 weeks ago, Casey Goodson Jr. Early this morning we learned of the killing of another African American at the hands of law enforcement,” Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said in a news conference on Tuesday.During the shooting death of Goodson, deputies were not wearing body-worn cameras. During Tuesday’s shooting, Ginther said that officers did not turn on their body-worn cameras until after the shooting occurred.Ginther said that the body-worn cameras worn by Columbus Police have a 60-second “lookback” feature that captured video of the shooting. The lookback feature does not capture the audio."The Division invested millions of dollars in these cameras for the express purpose of creating a video and audio record of these kinds of encounters. They provide transparency and accountability, and protect the public, as well as officers, when the facts are in question," Police Chief Thomas Quinlan said. WBNS reported that the cruiser’s dash camera was not activated as police were responding to a non-emergency call that did not require lights and sirens.“Our community is exhausted,” Ginther added. “While it is very early in the investigation, there is one fact that disturbs me greatly. The officer involved did not turn on their body-worn camera until after the shooting.”Ginther said that the officer’s badge and gun has been turned in, but would continue getting paid during the investigation due to contractual obligations.The family of the man killed on Tuesday will be shown the body-worn camera footage before it is released to the public. An online Good Samaritan challenge that's gone viral prompted two Michigan brothers to offer free lawn mowing to people who can't easily do it themselves.Now, the nationwide challenge's organizer is headed to metro Detroit to recognize their efforts.16-year-old Sam and 13-year-old Hunter have mowed 51 lawns in Westland for free since April. It's a task most people hate, especially in the summer heat; but Sam loves it. So when his parents told him about the "50 Yard Challenge," it was a no-brainer.“We get the feeling that we’re helping people who really can’t help themselves," he said.Rodney Smith, Jr. created the challenge. He's the founder of Raising Men Lawn Care Service in Alabama."Back in 2015, I came across an elderly man outside mowing his lawn. It looked like he was struggling, so I pulled over and helped him out. That night I decided I’ve to start mowing free lawns for the elderly, disabled, single parents, and veterans in Huntsville, Alabama," Smith told WXYZ. So it was really cool to see the amount of community that came out. The boys have actually made what we think are going to be long-lasting relationships with some of these that don’t have contact with the outside world," their mom Keri told WXYZ.Fifty other kids from around the country have also completed the challenge, and about 1,000 are in the process of doing it now.“It’s just great. Especially when things kind of hit, a lot of the activities they weren’t able to do anymore. We couldn’t play baseball, we couldn’t go out to school, we couldn’t have activities to actually do," said their dad, Kyle.They may be helping others, but the boys said they're getting something really important out of the work too.“It’s heartwarming.
