Gavin Newsom will concluded his "California for All'' Health Care Tour in San Diego Saturday by holding a rally to reaffirm his position on women's reproductive health services.Newsom had been on on the promotional tour since Tuesday, stopping in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento to discuss the health care initiatives in his proposed budget for the 2020 fiscal year.According to Newsom, his proposed initiatives would lower health care costs, expand on former President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act and make progress toward a single-payer health care system.The program would also bring back the Obamacare-era healthcare mandate that penalizes anyone who doesn't have healthcare coverage. Should state legislators approve Newsom's proposed budget, it would expand Medi-Cal coverage to adults ages 19-25 in California without illegally, offer subsidies to middle-income families with private health insurance and allocate 0 million for reproductive and sexual health care education and programs."No state has more at stake on the issue of health care. California must lead,'' Newsom said before the start of the tour. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A towering palm tree and the tree trimmer strapped to it came toppling down inside the lobby area at a University City-area hotel Thursday. The tree was being cut down at Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego-La Jolla, 4550 La Jolla Village Drive, when it struck a person shortly before 11 a.m., according to police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. San Diego Police told 10News the injured man was a tree trimmer. Medics took the victim, to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Joe Jaha, a supervisor at Arbor West Tree Surgeons, says a 3-man crew was at the hotel to take down three large palms in the lobby. He says the tree trimmer was 30 feet up the final, 40-foot palm. He had taken off the top and was trying to bring it down when the tree uprooted, with the tree and tree trimmer crashing to the ground. The tree trimmer, a man in his 30s, suffered a broken leg and arm."It had highly unusual, shallow roots, which we couldn't detect until it was too late. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A stabbing at a College Area bus stop left a man badly injured Friday, authorities reported.The 50-year-old victim was waiting for a bus in the 6900 block of El Cajon Boulevard when the assailant approached and began arguing with him shortly before 11:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.The quarrel ended when the stranger pulled a knife and stabbed the other man in the arm, then fled on foot, Officer Tony Martinez said.Patrol personnel applied a tourniquet to the victim's bleeding arm and performed CPR on him prior to the arrival of paramedics, who took him to a hospital for treatment of serious but apparently non-life-threatening trauma.Witnesses reported that the assailant -- described as a heavyset, heavily tattooed man in his 20s or 30s, wearing a red shirt and black bandana- style mask -- left the area eastbound and appeared to enter a nearby motel, police said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities warned the public Friday to beware of crooks who have telephoned Poway-area residents in recent weeks and tried to swindle them out of money by falsely claiming that the victims were in arrears due to outstanding arrest warrants or other obligations to local government coffers."These scammers and impersonators sometimes provide the victims with genuine Sheriff's Department phone numbers, and in the past they have actually used the names of real department employees," sheriff's Lt. Christopher Collier said. "They may sometimes even want to arrange a meeting in the parking lot of a government building or station in an effort to appear legitimate."No employees of the regional law enforcement agency -- or of any other county body -- contact members of the public by telephone to discuss such matters, Collier noted."Nor would any employees ever try to arrange a meeting to allow (a) payment to be made," the lieutenant said. "If you receive a call from a person or persons claiming to be a Sheriff's Department employee, and that person is trying to solicit a payment of some sort, please hang up the phone immediately."Victims of such illicit solicitations are also advised to report the offenses to the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov, or to local law enforcement if the contact results in an actual loss of money or personal information. 1392

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was arrested Monday morning after climbing onto the roof of a La Jolla home, where he remained for just over an hour before surrendering to SDPD officers.Dispatchers received a call around 4:45 a.m. from a woman who reported hearing a person on the roof of her home in the 1500 block of Coast Walk, off Torrey Pines Road just east of Prospect Place, San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez said.Officers responded to the home and the woman pointed them to where she had seen the suspect, Martinez said.Police entered the home to make sure the suspect hadn't made it inside, then they spotted him on the roof and ordered him to surrender, the officer said.The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody around 6:10 a.m., Martinez said.
