SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A calm overnight allowed firefighters to make progress against a trio of massive fires burning in Northern California. But they are girding for the arrival of a weather system Sunday that will bring high winds and thunderstorms that could spark new fires and fan existing blazes that already destroyed nearly 1,000 homes and other structures and forced tens of thousands to evacuate. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A fishing shop in Kearny Mesa was burglarized early Sunday morning. The break-in was caught on the San Diego Tackle Traders' surveillance cameras just before 4:30 a.m. The video shows two suspects, wearing masks and gloves, getting into the shop using a crowbar. The two people can be seen walking into the business, on Convoy Court, with a cooler and some type of container, heading towards the back of the shop. The owners of San Diego Tackle Traders say the suspects got away with several fishing reels and rods, a total value of ,000 to 0,00. The owners tell 10News this is a big blow to their small business. They say they work by appointment only and don't advertise their address online because of the value of the items they sell. SAN DIEGO (KTGV) - The City of San Diego could be looking at spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to figure out what to do next with a vacant city-owned building in the downtown area.A letter obtained by 10News shows the city is looking into proposals for additional services regarding the building at 101 Ash St.The Aug. 14 letter to the deputy director of architectural engineering and parks division outlined a proposal with costs for services estimated at 2,000."I think this is a ridiculous waste of money," said Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry. "What I proposed on Aug. 6 at the council meeting is still what I think the city should be doing, and that is to get into a room and negotiate with all the parties that have a financial interest."The downtown building at 101 Ash St. has been sitting vacant for most of the last four years, and as it continues to sit empty, taxpayers are footing the ,000 per day bill. As 10News previously reported, in 2016 the city approved a lease-to-own agreement for the building, valued at million.The idea was to move upward of 1,100 city employees into the facility. But officials quickly discovered a series of problems requiring major renovations to the site's 19 floors. In December 2019, the city finally began moving workers into the building, only to vacate them a month later when the county found traces of asbestos.This month, City Council leaders voted 5-4 — with Council Members Vivian Moreno, Monica Montgomery, Barbara Bry, and Georgette Gómez voting in opposition — to request monthly updates on the building's status and costs for several options presented by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office.According to the latest proposal letter, "The City has requested Kitchell to identify potential cost and schedule savings through further studies and investigations. Kitchell has added Jackson and Blanc Power Systems Testing to our team to perform diagnostic testing of the HVAC and Electrical systems to establish a baseline of operation. Upon completion of the diagnostic testing, Kitchell will develop four options for improving 101 Ash Street."The letter outlined several options that would eventually be presented to the city if leaders went with the proposal, including bare requirements to reoccupy the building, fire/life/safety recommendations, and potentially demolishing and replacing the existing building.The mayor's options for this building have included putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursuing a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely, the last of which could risk litigation and credit damage.When asked about the proposal letter obtained by ABC 10News, the mayor's office responded that the city's Communication Department provided information.A spokesperson for the city told ABC 10News, "Many documents, including this letter, may not be final. (KGTV): City leaders in San Diego want to bring another major military attraction to America's Finest City.On Tuesday, the City Council will vote on a resolution showing their support for bringing the National Medal of Honor Museum to town.The resolution touts the city's strong military ties and thriving tourism industry as reasons for why the Museum should pick San Diego.Right now, the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation is still in the fundraising and planning phase. According to their website, the museum would tell the stories of each of the 3,500+ Medal of Honor recipients. It would also have an education center.There's no word from the museum on when they plan to pick a location.San Diego already has the USS Midway Museum, which brings in over one million visitors each year. The resolution also lists the San Diego Air and Space Museum, the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, The Veterans’ Museum and Memorial Center, Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial, Cabrillo National Monument and the San Diego History Center as other major military monuments in town.The city is also home to the largest concentration of US Military members in the world.
