SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Smugglers from Mexico have reportedly been able to breach recently constructed sections of the border wall, according to a report from The Washington Post. Smugglers breached the wall's bollard steel and concrete sections using reciprocating saws, allowing drugs and people to pass through from Mexico, the Post reported, citing U.S. agents and officials. The exact locations of the damaged wall were not indicated.10News reached out to U.S. Customs and Border Protection Saturday. And then if you think you're going to go through the concrete that doesn't work because we have very powerful rebar inside."The new 14-mile stretch of bollard fencing was completed in August, running from Otay Mountain to San Diego's coastline. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some local colleges are shifting toward a new policy of getting rid of standardized test scores as an admissions requirement.The University of San Diego is one of 60 other colleges, including local Cal State and University of California campuses, now using the "test blind" policy amid a pandemic-altered high school experience and education.The SAT has been something on Laila Ellyse's mind for some time now. She says part of her concern recently has been COVID-19-related restrictions on testing group sizes."You've been hearing about it for such a long time you have to take the SAT, it's like this big bad test," Ellyse said. "The number of seats available at any given test site is now reduced because of social distancing and all of those kinds of things." Ellyse says she had to go all the way to Utah to take the test because there were no testing site options in California. Standardized testing has also become increasingly debate following the nationwide college admissions scandal, in which several parents were charged with paying to get their kids admitted to top tier colleges.That's part of the reason USD is now a test blind campus. While SAT or ACT scores can be admitted, they'll be ignored for admission. Instead, college officials will consider other factors including high school academic record and GPA, letters of recommendation, admission essays, extra-curricular involvement, work experiences, and family responsibilities.USD says it hopes the new policy will make the admissions process fair and equitable for all students and allow lower-income students who may face barriers to accessing testing an even playing field.The test blind policy may not be permanent though. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s boating community is stepping up to help a family who lost their floating home in a fire. The boat, Both/And World, caught fire while docked at the Shelter Island Marina Saturday just before 3 p.m. "I was just merely walking off of the boat and saw the smoke, thought it was a barbecue then the kids started screaming on the dock and saw the black smoke and knew it was time to react,” said witness Charlie Colson. The man who lived on the boat with his family grabbed a small hose and tried to put out the flames, Colson said. People on shore grabbed a larger hose and had most of the flames knocked down by the time firefighters arrived. Colson said the family, which includes the man’s wife and 6-year-old son with special needs, had just moved on to the boat last week. The only salvageable items were the boy’s stuffed Donald Duck and his iPad. According to Colson, the flames were sparked by a lithium battery on a charger. Investigators have yet to release the official cause of the fire. “It’s gonna change their plans for a little but it’ll all work out,” said Colson. “The lucky part: no one was hurt; no other boats damaged; family’s okay, other than being rattled.” Colson believes the boat is a total loss. However, the sailing community has offered other boats to the family. 1328
