(KGTV) - If a person suffers cardiac arrest inside a hospital, their chances of surviving are lower than you may think.According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the survival rate for adults is just 23%. The nonprofit attributes this low number to poor-quality CPR."So we need to do better in order to improve that number, our patients deserve better, our staff deserves better," said Sarah Saunders-Harbaugh, a clinical lead at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center.Saunders-Harbaugh is leading the hospital's effort to adopt the new AHA training method: RQI 2020, which stands for Resuscitation Quality Improvement. The simulation-based training provides verbal feedback in real-time while staff members do compressions and ventilations. Previously staff was only required to get re-certified every two years. With RQI 2020 staff will train every three months, but only for about 15 minutes each time."So 'we're constantly building muscle memory, and we have the opportunity to get better while we're using this equipment and then we have the opportunity to save more lives in the hospital," said Saunders-Harbaugh.A Texas hospital using this training method increased its survival rate by 21%, doubling the previous rate.Sharp Chula Vista is the first hospital in the county to implement RQI 2020, and the AHA hopes to have it in every hospital by 2025. 1389

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Wis. – A black bear is thanking its lucky stars that a Wisconsin family was in the right place at the right time.After a day of fishing on Sunday, Tricia Hurt told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that she, her husband and their son were returning to a dock on Marsh-Miller Lake when they spotted something strange in the water.As the family approached, they realized it was a young bear that was struggling to swim because it had a cheese ball container stuck around its head.They felt compelled to help free the bear from the tub, worrying that if they didn’t, it wouldn’t be able to make it back to short safely.So, Tricia says her son Brady maneuvered their boat while her husband leaned into the water to tug on the container. It took multiple passes, but they eventually managed to free the animal from the plastic. Tricia says the bear then swam back to shore.The family believes that if they had not helped the bear, it may have not made it to shore, because it was breathing heavily and the container had filled with water.Tricia documented their rescue efforts on video and posted it online. As of Tuesday morning, her Facebook post has been shared more than 18,000 times.The family says the bear had actually been spotted several times over the past few days and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources had been looking for it, but without any luck. 1389

(KGTV) -- A Chula Vista Police officer was honored with a Medal of Valor and Purple Heart from the Chula Vista Police Department Thursday morning after being stabbed while on duty in 2017.Officer David Sachs was honored with a Medal of Valor for his “extraordinary bravery and willingness to protect the lives of others, without regard for his own safety” the department said. He was also awarded a Purple Heart for his injuries while on duty.On September 19 of 2017, Officer Sachs along with Officer Leo Banales and Chaplain Wes Anderson responded to a home on Monterey Avenue after receiving a report that a man’s neighbor threw a large piece of concrete over his fence, injuring the victim.RELATED: Chula Vista Police officer who shot man recovering from stabbing?When officers arrived, the victim pointed out the suspect’s house. After knocking on the door, the suspect’s mother answered and invited the officers in.Police say, though they didn’t know at the time, the suspect, described as a 6-foot-tall man in his late 20s, was suffering from emotional or psychological distress.After stepping into the home’s kitchen, the suspect started attacking Sachs with a knife, stabbing him multiple times in the face, head and arm.Police say Sachs was able to knock the suspect to the ground while yelling “Knife! Knife! Knife!” to his partners.The suspect then lunged at Banales with a knife before he and Anderson went outside. According to police, Sachs drew his weapon and told the suspect to drop the knife before the suspect blocked the exit and attacked him again with the knife.RELATED: Officer stabbed, suspect shot three times in Chula Vista?Police say Sachs then moved the suspect’s mother behind him for safety and shot the suspect. The suspect collapsed in the dining room after being struck.After hearing the shots, Anderson went back to the home’s front door to help. (KGTV) — South Bay police officers closed down two marijuana dispensaries operating illegally.Two search warrants were served at illegal pot shops on Thursday by Chula Vista Police, according to the department. One dispensary was located at 500 Vance Street. CVPD arrested two employees on felony charges of operating an illegal dispensary and seized about ,000 in cash and 0,000 to million in illegal products.The second bust occurred at an illegal shop in the 900 block of Broadway.
