WASHINGTON — Public health guidance to avoid big parties in the age of coronavirus is about to collide with the swearing-in of a new president. There are also reports President Donald Trump may use his last morning in office to plan a send-off and possibly a rally. With lots of details to be worked out, this year's event honoring President-elect Joe Biden is sure to be more subdued than prior inaugural days.Trump has not publicly said whether or not he will attend the swearing in on January 20, as traditionally the outgoing president has done before welcoming the new president to the White House. Aides have not speculated what he plans to do.Trump may plan a “made-for-TV” moment on his last day in office, according to Axios. Sources say Trump is considering a White House departure on Marine One and a final Air Force One flight to Florida to attend a political rally. There is some speculationTrump will announce a presidential campaign run in 2024 on Inauguration Day, according to NBC News.Meanwhile, Biden this week has named top Democrats to the committee putting the day’s events together, including Representative James Clyburn, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti.A giant parade down Pennsylvania Avenue isn't likely. Fancy balls may morph into virtual events. The traditional luncheon where lawmakers offer best wishes to the new president might not include food this year.As for the swearing-in itself, the inaugural platform on the Capitol’s West Front is going up just like always, but it probably won’t be as crowded. Some estimate the platform will hold fewer than 1,600 people, all wearing masks and socially distant. The choir that typically sings behind the new president may not happen, however the Marine Band, which has played at every inauguration since 1801, is still scheduled to participate.Aides working to plan the day’s events say perception matters, and holding indoor events, including food and drink, could send the wrong message to Americans who have been repeatedly told to limit gatherings and wear masks. 2079

WASHINGTON — U.S. health officials have started two new studies to test various blood thinners to try to prevent strokes, heart attacks, blood clots and other complications in COVID-19 patients.Doctors increasingly are finding blood clots throughout the bodies of many people who died from COVID-19 along with signs of damage they do to kidneys, lungs, blood vessels, the heart and other organs.National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Director Gary Gibbons says that hospitals have been giving seriously ill patients anti-clotting drugs to try to prevent this, but “quite frankly, we didn’t know how best to treat it” in terms of which drugs or doses to use and at what stage of illness. The National Institutes of Health will coordinate a study in hospitalized patients comparing low and regular doses of the blood thinner heparin. The study will involve more than 100 sites around the world participating in a research effort with various governments, drug companies, universities and others to speed coronavirus therapies.A second study in COVID-19 patients not sick enough to need hospitalization will test various strategies against placebo pills: baby aspirin or low or regular doses of the anti-clotting drug apixaban, sold as Eliquis in the United States. The goal there is preventing blood clots or hospitalization.A third study starting later will test blood thinners for people who have recovered and no longer test positive for the coronavirus. Evidence is building that they may remain at higher risk for blood clots. 1538

WASHINGTON (AP) — A record number of women were elected to the House on Tuesday, nearly two years after women spilled out into the streets of Washington and in cities across the country in defiance of the inauguration of President Donald Trump. The incoming class of lawmakers could have a stark impact on politics in the nation's capital, particularly within the Democratic Party, after a midterm election that was widely seen as a referendum on Trump's first term.As of early Wednesday, voters were on track to send at least 99 women to the House, surpassing the previous record of 84. According to data compiled by The Associated Press, 237 women ran for the House as major-party candidates this year.Among the new lawmakers headed to the House is Jennifer Wexton, a Virginia state senator who defeated incumbent Barbara Comstock in one of the most closely watched races across the country. And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the former Bernie Sanders organizer who won an upset primary victory over a senior House Democrat, will also head to Congress.RELATED CONTENT 1072

Video door bells are becoming more common, allowing homeowners to see who is at their door without having to look through the peephole. These cameras, as well as other home surveillance, can capture some situations that may be important in an investigation. Police are warning homeowners to be cautious about sharing the surveillance video publicly.Last week, a mystery woman was seen on camera ringing doorbells in a Texas neighborhood. The video was widely spread in hopes someone could identify the woman, who appeared to be distressed. It’s a type of situation police hope homeowners will first share the video with authorities before posting it on social media.  "What you posted on social media, that may well tell a thief, ‘Stay out of this neighborhood. I'm going to move on to another one,’” says Peter Henning, a law professor at Wayne State University Law School. “That could thwart an investigation."Another reason? You could be wrong.  "There's always that concern that might you be identifying someone who, in fact, has nothing to do with criminal activity," Henning says. And if the people in the video are in fact criminals, you could be putting yourself in danger by identifying yourself through posting on social media; It could make you a target for further attacks."If this were to be a dangerous criminal, someone who is prone to violence, it is better not to have ordinary individuals going out and dealing with them that could be disastrous," explains Henning. One of the most important reasons to share with police, before you go public, is they might have other information."The police are going to be aware of packages being taken from two blocks away that I may never have heard of," says Henning.Either way, Henning encourages people to think before they act, post or share.Being cautious can help you solve your case faster and with more effective outcome. 1911

WASHINGTON — Stimulus checks and unemployment benefits may be getting a lot of the headlines, but plenty of businesses stand to gain from Congress' latest economic relief package. After all, while 0 stimulus checks for those making under ,000 a year and 0-a-week unemployment bonuses for those out of work will help many struggling, aid to businesses may prevent millions of layoffs in the coming months. AIRLINESThe airline industry has been hit particularly hard this pandemic. The new relief package provides billion to airlines to keep their payrolls operating. American Airlines and United Airlines have already indicated they will begin hiring back furloughed employees as a result of the infusion of cash. ENTERTAINMENT VENUES The arts have been impacted greatly during this pandemic and shows are expected to be canceled throughout much of 2021. The bill provides billion for entertainment venues and the arts to help offset losses. RESTAURANTS The restaurant industry has struggled for nearly a year now and no targeted relief is included in the bill. Restaurants owners will have access to more than 0 billion dollars' worth of Paycheck Protection Program loans, however. This time they will be able to receive higher amounts and use the loans for more things other than payroll, such as remodeling their facility to make it safer or buying perishable items. LANDLORDS billion is included in rental assistance to help tenants pay the rent. This in turn helps landlords who have struggled as well with some tenants being out of work and behind on payments. Congress also extended the moratorium on evictions through the end of January. 1677
