Who needs to keep a package of ready to eat macaroni and cheese from spoiling for three years at room temperature? If you're planning a trip to Mars, the answer could be yes. Researchers at Washington State University say they have found a way to triple the lifespan of ready to eat food. In the case of the macaroni and cheese, researchers believe they have found a way to keep macaroni from spoiling for three years. Previously the max lifespan the researchers could get for macaroni and cheese was 12 months using plastic. But using microwave-assisted thermal sterilization and adding a organic coating to metal oxide coating to the plastic can allow food to last three times longer. “We need a better barrier to keep oxygen away from the food and provide longer shelf-life similar to aluminum foil and plastic laminate pouches,” Shyam Sablani, a researcher with WSU, said in a statement. “We’ve always been thinking of developing a product that can go to Mars, but with technology that can also benefit consumers here on Earth.”While using metal oxide coating has been around for sometime, there was a flaw with the coating developing cracks to allow the food to be exposed to oxygen. “We are excited that an over-layer of organic coating on metal oxide helped protect against microscopic cracks,” Sablani said. “Multiple layers of metal oxide coating have also increased the barrier performance. Our research guided development of newer high barrier packaging.”Researchers like Sablani are hopeful the new technology could assist NASA in preserving food for a potential trip to Mars. With current technology, a trip to Mars could last at least two years. A one-way trip to Mars alone could last at least nine months. “NASA knows about our work, but we’re just now getting to the point where we can talk to them with a proven product,” Sablani said. “We hope to work out a way to test these products on the International Space Station in the future to show that the food is safe after long-term storage.”NASA has said its benchmark is for food to last five years. Sablani's team has food that is currently being aged to see if it is possible to store ready to eat meals for five years. Even if the technology might not be used for a trip to Mars, it could be of interest for the military. The packaging could be used for "meals ready to eat or MREs. 2366

Utah Jazz Rudy Gobert apologized on Thursday after testing positive for the coronavirus, which caused the NBA to cancel Wednesday's game between the Jazz and Thunder. Later in the evening on Wednesday, the NBA decided to indefinitely suspend play for all 30 teams. Earlier in the week, Gobert jokingly touched reporters' microphones at the end of a news conference. The touching came as public health officials recommend keeping objects disinfected and people engage in social distancing. Gobert's actions happened before he came down with any symptoms of coronavirus. It was learned on Thursday that a fellow member of the Jazz also tested positive for coronavirus. "I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of concern and support over the last 24 hours," Gobert said. "I have gone through so many emotions since learning of my diagnosis…mostly fear, anxiety, and embarrassment."The first and most important thing is I would like to publicly apologize to the people that I may have endangered. At the time, I had no idea I was even infected. I was careless and make no excuse. I hope my story serves as a warning and causes everyone to take this seriously. I will do whatever I can to support using my experience as way to educate others and prevent the spread of this virus ."I am under great care and will fully recover. Thank you again for all your support. I encourage everyone to take all of the steps to stay safe and healthy. Love." 1455

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Trump administration says it will allow individuals and businesses to delay paying their tax bills for 90 days past the April 15 deadline. It’s part of an effort to inject as much as 0 billion into the economy at a time when the country is in danger of being pushed into a recession by the coronavirus.Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin is encouraging Americans who can to file their taxes on or before April 15 to do so that they don’t lose out on their tax refunds. But Mnuchin says that if Americans owe the IRS money, they can defer up to million for individuals and million for corporations without interest and penalties for 90 days. The delay on payments applies to federal returns. Americans will want to double-check their state’s tax deadlines to see if there are any delays applied. The White House is also hoping to send stimulus checks directly to people as the nation grapples with the pandemic.President Donald Trump and Mnuchin said during a White House briefing that they want to send checks to Americans in the next two weeks in an effort to curb the economic impact.Across the United States, over 4,660 people have been infected by the COVID-19 virus and 95 people have died. 1234

WASHINGTON — U.S. employers downshifted on hiring in December, adding 145,000 jobs as consumer spending appeared to aid gains in the retail and hospitality sectors in what should provide a strong foundation for 2020.The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate held at 3.5% for the second straight month, prolonging a half-century low. Hiring slipped after robust gains of 256,000 in November there were caused in part by the one-off end of a strike at General Motors.“We’re starting 2020 in very good shape,” said Gus Faucher, chief economist at PNC Financial Services. "We should see continued economic expansion throughout 2020 driven by consumers."Still, the job growth has failed so far to put upward pressure on hourly pay. The pace of annual average wage growth slowed in December to 2.9% from 3.3% a year ago, a possible sign that there is still room for additional job gains despite the decade-plus expansion that has reduced the number of unemployed Americans. There is also the potential that wages jumped in January as many states adjusted their minimum wages. Some businesses in competitive industries are already taking steps to prepare for wage competition this year. The Big Blue Swim School based in Chicago vies with day cares, learning centers and gyms for its instructors. The chain has five sites employing on average 30 people and plans to open five more schools this year and 17 in 2021. But it had to dramatically boost wages in order to attract staff for that expansion."We gave all of our front-line employees a 10% or 11% raise because of the fear we have about the wage pressures in the economy,” said CEO Chris Kenny. “We can’t meet our business goal without great staff.”The U.S. economy added 2.1 million jobs last year, down from gains of nearly 2.7 million in 2018. Hiring may have slowed because the number of unemployed people seeking work has fallen by 540,000 people over the past year to 5.75 million. With fewer unemployed people hunting for jobs, there is a potential limit on job gains. The steady hiring growth during the expansion has contributed to gains in consumer spending. Retail sales during the crucial holiday shopping improved 3.4% compared to the prior year, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse. This likely contributed to a surge of hiring in retail as that sector added 41,200 jobs in December. The leisure and hospitality sector — which includes restaurants and hotels — added another 40,000 jobs. Health care and social assistance accounted 33,900 new jobs.Still, the report suggests a lingering weakness in manufacturing.Factories shed 12,000 jobs in December, after the end of the GM strike produced gains of 58,000 in November. Manufacturing companies added just 46,000 jobs in all of 2019.Manufacturing struggled last year because of trade tensions between the United States and China coupled with slower global economic growth. Safety problems at Boeing have also hurt orders for aircraft and parts. 2987

We all know that leaving our dogs in the car on a hot sunny day for a long period of time is a bad idea. Temperatures can rise faster than we realize, putting our pets’ health and lives at risk.William Loopesko says he’s created a tool to help with just that.“I live in Colorado with my dog, Clovis. And Clovis and I enjoy hiking in the mountains, camping, etc, but that requires taking him in the car,” Loopesko says.Long car rides mean the occasional—and required—pit stop.“So, I wanted to have a way to be able to check on him and know that he’s always OK when I can’t be there with him,” he says.Loopesko created “PuppTech,” a device for your car that measures temperature and humidity levels.“It tells you the heat index, transmits all that data over a cellular connection, so I can at any time pull up how Clovis is doing on my phone.”Clovis is a 7-year-old male Labrador retriever, and Loopesko says his “comfortable” temperature range is anywhere between 41 and 72 degrees. The temperature ranges vary depending on the breed, sex, and age of the dog.“If it was above the 84 degrees for Clovis, I would be getting a text message every 5 minutes saying, ‘Hey it’s too hot. Hey it’s too hot. Hey it’s too hot.’”Decals on car windows let others know that a dog’s health is being monitored while an owner is away. But experts say an app should never replace common sense.“I worry that it could be a little bit of a false sense of security for some people,” says veterinarian Dr. Leslie Longo with Denver’s VCA Firehouse animal hospital.“I think you still have to be mindful if you’re leaving your dog in the car that it could still get hot, something could go wrong.”Loopesko says he wouldn’t disagree, but he says the app gives people one more tool for those times when owners just don’t have a choice.“If dogs were allowed to go everywhere, then our product wouldn’t need to exist,” Loopesko says.Loopesko says PuppTech is already being shipped out to its crowdfunders, and he expects it’ll be available to the general public before the end of the year. 2069
