The College Football Playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl is moving to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.Bill Hancock, executive director of the College Football Playoff, made the announcement in a statement Saturday night on the eve of the release of the final playoff rankings.The College Football Playoff and Rose Bowl "mutually agreed" to move the game because of the growing number of coronavirus cases in Southern California."We are pleased that parents and loved ones will now be able to see their students play in the game," Hancock said.The move came after several coaches expressed their dismay about possibly traveling to the Rose Bowl to play in a game where players' families wouldn't be allowed.Los Angeles County is under a stay-at-home order that took effect earlier this month. Pasadena, home to the Rose Bowl, has its own public health department but has mostly followed the county's practices during the pandemic.A source told The Associated Press that the Rose Bowl sought an exemption from the state of California to allow families to attend but was denied twice.Hancock said the game will still be played in the mid-afternoon on New Year's Day."We are very grateful to Rose Bowl officials and the city of Pasadena," Hancock said. "They have worked hard to listen to the concerns of the CFP, the teams that might have played there, and their state and government officials. The brother of the accused Parkland shooter has been involuntarily committed to a mental facility, sources tell Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida.Nikolas Cruz’s brother was involuntarily committed to a mental institution, under Florida's Baker Act.The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office detained Cruz Friday afternoon, according to sources. The Broward Sheriff’s Office placed the Baker Act on Cruz. Under Florida's Baker Act, an adult can be held for an involuntary exam for up to 72 hours under the law. The Florida State Senate passed a bill Monday that would raise the age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21, require a three-day waiting period for most gun purchases and ban the sale or possession of bump fire stocks, which can make it easier for a semi-automatic weapon to function like an automatic rifle.The "Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act" (SB 7026) would also give law enforcement more power to seize weapons and ammunition from those deemed mentally unfit or otherwise a threat and provide additional funding for armed school resource officers and for mental health services.The Senate measure comes more than two weeks after a gunman killed 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Stoneman Douglas students and parents have lobbied lawmakers to pass stricter gun control measures.The bill now moves to the Florida House. The Flores family has been farming dates for three generations.For the past few years, Marco Flores, owner of San Marcos Date Farm, says he’s seen major changes in temperature and weather patterns.“It’s drier than it used to be,” he said of the land his father bought in California’s Coachella Valley more than 55 years ago. “It used to be a lot more moist before.”These are conditions his 300 fruit-producing palm trees don’t like.“Sometimes there’s no rain,” Flores said. “The impact of climate change is definitely doing something to them.”Similar concerns are being expressed across the planet.“Climate change is impacting agriculture and farmers abilities,” said Paul Minehart of the Syngenta Group, a global agricultural innovation company.Minehart’s team recently published a study showing 72% of farmers they interviewed from around the world are worried about climate changes impacting crop yields.“It’s coming down to, especially in the United States, is the unpredictable weather patterns that are beginning to emerge,” he said.Minehart says those unpredictable weather patterns include unusual droughts and flooding in America and extremely arid conditions in other countries.
