BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhuanet) -- European anti-trust regulators Monday launched in-depth probes into takeover bids for two Asian companies by two American peers in the computer hard disk drive sector, media reports said Tuesday.U.S.-based Seagate Technology has said it wants to buy Samsung Electronics Co's loss-making hard disk drive unit for 1.4 billion U.S. dollars -- a deal that will give Seagate access to Samsung's NAND-type flash chips for its solid-state drive products.Western Digital plans to purchase Hitachi Ltd's hard disk drive business for 4.3 billion dollars to give it an edge in developing next-generation storage technology.The two planned acquisitions in a sector with just five manufacturers worldwide have raised concerns in Brussels, the European Commission said."Hard drives are the backbone of the digital economy," said EU competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia in announcing the investigation."The sector has already experienced significant consolidation and the proposed acquisitions will further reduce competition."Brussels officials have until Oct. 10 to decide what action if any they will take.

LOS ANGELES, June 20 (Xinhua) -- NASA's Cassini spacecraft has successfully completed its second-closest encounter with Saturn's icy moon Helene, beaming down raw images of the small moon, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) said on Monday.At closest approach on June 18 Cassini flew within 4,330 miles (6,968 kilometers) of Helene's surface, the second closest approach to Helene of the entire mission, said JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles.This flyby will enable scientists to finish creating a global map of Helene, so they can better understand the history of impacts to the moon and gully-like features seen on previous flybys, according to JPL.Passing from Helene's night side to the moon's sunlit side, Cassini also captured images of the Saturn-facing side of the moon in sunlight, a region that was only illuminated by sunlight reflected off Saturn the last time Cassini closely encountered with the moon in March 2010.The closest Helene encounter of the mission took place on March 10, 2010, when Cassini flew within 1,131 miles (1,820 kilometers) of the moon.The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The services were shutdown following the breach detected on Friday. They are still not resumed on the official website of the company late Sunday night and the company said it is investigating the hacking.The company said most of the users of the hacked website are in Europe and North America. A similar cyberattack had troubled the Sony group earlier in April. The hacking affected about 100 million people.

VANCOUVER, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The fourth International Health Qigong Tournament and Exchange kicked off the competition portion of the Vancouver event Saturday to showcase the health benefits of this increasingly popular activity.At a gala opening ceremony in the War Memorial Gymnasium at the University of British Columbia, the biennial tournament was being held outside of China for the first time in an effort to promote the exercise that involves controlled breathing, body postures, movement and mental concentration.The Vancouver tournament has attracted 44 Health Qigong groups from 25 countries and regions, 327 participants in all. The event was last held in Shanghai in 2009.Xiao Min, the All-China Sports Federation vice president, said after three successful events in China, it was important to explore the possibilities of rotating the host venues around the world to boost the exposure of Health Qigong to a wider audience, effectively strengthening the interaction of the Eastern and Western cultures.Calling it "one of the best Chinese traditional sports," Xiao added, "we still have a long way to go in promoting Health Qigong. PHNOM PENH, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphin population in the Mekong River numbers just 85, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) new research revealed on Wednesday.Calf survival was found to be very low, leading researchers to conclude that the small population is declining and at high risk of extinction, said the Fund's statement sent to Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday.According to Li Lifeng, Director of WWF's Freshwater Program, the research is based on photographic identification of dolphins through individually unique features of their dorsal fins. "Most of the dolphins can be identified, and we use that information to estimate the population size," he said.Although this population estimate is slightly higher than the previous estimate, the researchers were quick to note that the population had not increased over the last few years."With a larger dataset and recent analytical advances, previously unidentifiable dolphins which had few marks on their dorsal fins have been included," he added.However, surveys conducted from 2007 to 2010 show the population slowly declining."Evidence is strong that very few young animals survive to adulthood, as older dolphins die off and are not replaced," he explained."Pressures of gill net entanglement and high calf mortality we are really worried for the future of dolphins," Li said.However, Touch Seang Tana, chairman of Cambodia's Commission for Conversation and Development of the Mekong River Dolphins Eco- tourism Zone, rejected the WWF's finding, saying that last year, 4 dolphins were killed by fishing nets, but up to 7 newborn dolphin babies were found.He estimated that the total population of Mekong dolphins in the north-eastern provinces of Kratie and Stung Treng is between 155 and 177 now, up from just 100 in 2006.The Mekong River Irrawaddy dolphin has been listed as critically endangered on the World Conservation Union Red List of Threatened Species since 2004.
