SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - These days, it's hard to go a block in the East Village without seeing a restaurant that's out of business.Recently, the Tilted Kilt, Market Hall, Smashburger, and Sol Cal Cafe have all shuttered. "I just noticed constant, consistent places are closing around here," said Ed Korb, who was visiting the area Thursday.Alina Ahmed, who owns Cafe De L'Opera, on J Street, says it's ever-increasing rents, and higher costs like minimum wage and electricity that are squeezing her, and causing her colleagues to close. She's been in business for five years, and says it gets harder each time the calendar turns. "Everybody thinks that because you're close to Petco Park, which is a great location, you're going to make a lot of money," she said. Ahmed says she tried keeping her cafe open during Padre games, but even then the foot traffic couldn't justify it.The East Village Association, which keeps a directory businesses, said in a statement that this part of the evolution of the neighborhood."As the East Village community continues to grow, so to does the sophistication of our businesses housing and residents, which lends to a competitive higher end urban environment, offering a uniquely downtown San Diego experience," the association said. A spokeswoman for the Tilted Kilt, which also closed its Mission Valley location earlier this year, said the owner of the space near Petco Park wanted to go in a different direction.   1502

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department released several videos of a deadly shooting that occurred after a pursuit ended in Chula Vista.The shooting took place after a pursuit that started in Orange County around midnight on Oct. 4. The suspect of the chase, identified as Christopher Ulmer, 33, of Whitter, Calif., led officers to Chula Vista, where authorities stopped his vehicle using a pit maneuver on I-805 south near Orange Avenue at about 1 a.m.Police say Ulmer exited his vehicle and pointed his arm at officers who believed he was holding a firearm, prompting officers to fire their service weapons. Officers say Ulmer got back up and pointed at officers again, prompting a second round of gunfire.RELATED: Pursuit suspect shot by law enforcement on I-805 in Chula Vista identifiedUlmer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead.Video released by the Sheriff's Department showed a photo of a black, cylindrical object found underneath Ulmer's body that authorities believed to have been a gun before they fired their weapons.The CHP officers involved in the shooting were identified as Sergeant John Holm who has been employed for 22 years, Officer Pakko Mendez who has been employed for 11 years, officer Javier Mendoza who has been employed for seven years, and officer Lauren Chi who has been employed for three years.RELATED: Authorities identify officers involved in deadly South Bay shootingThe San Diego Police officers involved in the shooting were identified as Sergeant Michael Pidgeon who has been employed for 26 years, and officer Patrick Harvey who has been employed for seven years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The young woman killed while walking on Interstate 8 in the College Area Saturday was a San Diego State University Student, the Daily Aztec reported.The California Highway Patrol said the woman was on the right hand shoulder of westbound I-8 at Waring Rd. just before 8 p.m. when she was struck and killed.Officers shut down most lanes of the freeway to investigate the crash.The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman Monday as 20-year-old Jasmine Madarang.The Daily Aztec reported she was last seen at a Kappa Alpha tailgate party before SDSU's game against Stanford.CHP investigators are looking into the cause of Madarang's death. 706
