Mike "Doc" Emrick, the legendary NHL broadcaster who has been calling hockey games for decades, is retiring. The New York Post was the first to report his retirement.“I hope I can handle retirement OK,” Emrick told the New York Post Sunday night. “Especially since I’ve never done it before. MENTOR, Ohio — Some northeast Ohio salon owners are concerned House Bill 189, which proposes cuts in mandatory cosmetology training, could create a potential public safety issue.The measure sponsored by State Representatives Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson) and Alicia Reece (D-Cincinnati) calls for a reduction in training for cosmetology licensing from 1500 hours to 1000 hours.Bill proponents believe the measure will improve Ohio’s cosmetology laws by allowing more cosmetology graduates to enter the workforce earlier and with less debt, thus increasing entrepreneurship and bolstering the workforce for Ohio’s salons.But some local salon owners, like Jennifer Pealer with Jenniffer and Company Salon in Mentor, believe a reduction in required training can set-up future cosmetologists for potential salon mistakes. Pealer believes 1500 hours of training is needed to insure cosmetologists are prepared to use potentially hazardous chemicals and equipment on a daily basis."The biggest thing is public safety," said Pealer. "Hair damage can occur very easily without proper training. What happens is there is damage to the follicle, the hair breaks off, and if it's not reproduced, there could be balding."Salon owner Nancy Brown owns the Brown Aveda and Casal Aveda Institutes for cosmetology training in Northeast Ohio and believes HB-189, and its companion Senate bill, SB-129, are being considered for the benefit of chain salons, which provide quick hair cuts and not more technical services.Brown believes the measures sets cosmetologists up to be under-trained, and could also cut training for nail technicians to just 100 hours."The equipment we use requires training, the shears we use are sharp enough to perform surgery," said Brown. "Our curling irons at the professional level are 450 degrees. MCALLEN, Texas (AP) — Authorities say two police officers were shot and killed Saturday by a suspect who later fatally shot himself in a South Texas border town after responding to a domestic disturbance call. McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez identified the slain officers as 45-year-old Edelmiro Garza and 39-year-old Ismael Chavez. Garza was an officer with the police department for more than eight years while Chavez had over two years of experience. Police say the officers first met with two people who reported assaults that took place inside a nearby home on the south side of the city. The alleged shooter, whom police identified as 23-year-old Audon Ignacio Camarillo, opened fire when officers attempted to enter the home. 746

Iota struck Monday evening as a Category 4 hurricane, hitting nearly the same location as Hurricane Eta two weeks earlier. By early Wednesday, Iota had dissipated over El Salvador. Lutz, Fla. — The driver of a Tesla plowed through the wall of an empty storefront and then into the side of the Anytime Fitness on North Dale Mabry Highway in Pasco County, Florida.No one in the gym was hurt, although witnesses tell Scripps station WFTS in Tampa there were several people working out at the time, which was before noon on Sunday, April 22.The driver was also not injured.Florida Highway Patrol and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.The driver told troopers and deputies that she was coming into the parking lot to stop at the nearby nail salon, and said she was pressing the brakes, but the vehicle kept accelerating.The first store she crashed into used to be a karate studio where kids would normally be working out, but that business recently re-located.Her vehicle slammed through a second wall, into the gym next to several treadmills.Authorities did not administer a sobriety test, according to the crash report.Tesla vehicle are equipped with what is called “Auto-Pilot” mode, but auto-pilot is not the vehicle’s mode of functioning, especially if the vehicle is not on a highway and is turning into a parking lot. 1179
