SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego county father is speaking out about his family's close call caught on video during an off-road race down in Baja, but the driver behind the wheel says it's not what it looks like. Earlier in April, Matt Scarpuzzi of Alpine and hundreds of other drivers were participating in the "San Felipe 250" when he says another driver deliberately drove through a group of spectators, including his wife and two young children. In this type of racing drivers can deviate from the set course as long as they make it to the checkpoints, so technically it wasn't against the rules."I couldn't believe that was the best decision, in my opinion, it jeopardizes the fan safety and it jeopardizes a sport that I love," said Scarpuzzi.The man behind the wheel, B-J Baldwin, spoke to 10News and said it looks worse than it actually was.  "I had 100 percent visibility, I knew where everybody was at, knew everybody was safe. Again I was only going about 2 miles an hour when I drove through these tents," Baldwin said. He posted the video on his Facebook page and offered to replace anything he damaged. "I assured everybody that no one was in danger and I was very very careful when trying to re-enter the course and access the course," said Baldwin.  1317

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A mountain lion cub rescued by the San Diego Humane Society continues to make great strides in its recovery.The Humane Society said the female cub was found by Vista Grande Fire Station firefighters near a road in Idyllwild on Sept. 2. The cub was “semiconscious, extremely emaciated, dehydrated, weak and had tremors,” according to the Humane Society.Under the care of the Humane Society’s Project Wildlife, the cub -- believed to be 14 weeks old -- has made significant health progress.Through daily fluid therapy, medications, and proper meals, the Humane Society said the cub has increased her weight from 10.5 pounds to 22 pounds.Christine Barton, the director of Operations & Wildlife Rehabilitation at the Humane Society’s Ramona campus, said, “With each passing day, she becomes more active and responsive and, though she still has some medical issues to overcome from being in such a fragile state, we are delighted she has responded well to our treatment and are hopeful she will make a full recovery. Mountain lions are special predators and we are proud to have an expert team trusted by the state of California to care for the species.”The Humane Society added:“Mountain lions typically stay with their mother until they disperse to live a solitary life at around 12-18 months of age. Because it is not safe to return a young mountain lion to the wild if found injured or orphaned as a kitten, Project Wildlife has been working with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to monitor her progress and when stabilized, to ensure she has a good permanent home at a qualified facility.San Diego Humane Society acquired the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona on Sept. 1 from the Humane Society of the United States. San Diego’s median income can afford renters 552 square feet, according to a new report by Rent Café. The City of San Diego says the median income for a family of four is ,400. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A sailor was critically injured by a rotating helicopter blade at MCAS Camp Pendleton this week, officials announced Friday.The sailor was struck by a spinning UH-01Y Venom tail rotor blade while the aircraft was on deck Wednesday just after 6 p.m., officials said.The service member was brought to a San Diego hospital after the incident and was in critical condition Friday.Officials did not name the sailor but said they are assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.An investigation has begun, though no additional details were made available. 573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A passenger has tested positive for coronavirus on one of the first Caribbean cruises since the pandemic started. The case may push the start of cruising out of San Diego even further.On its maiden voyage since the pandemic, the SeaDream Cruiseliner has its first case of COVID-19. Travel writer Gene Sloan for “The Points Guy” is on that ship and now stuck in quarantine.“They’re going right now cabin to cabin and testing everyone on board,” said Sloan.The ship with 53 passengers and 66 crew set sail from Barbados on Saturday. Sloan says everyone got tested before getting on board and the trip was going well until the captain made an announcement Wednesday that someone had tested positive.All passengers were instructed to self-isolate in their staterooms.The CDC’s “No Sail Order” for ships in the United States expired Oct. 30.
