BEIJING, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela President Hugo Chavez concluded his working visit to China and left Beijing on Thursday night. During his two-day stay, Chavez met with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Vice President Xi Jinping respectively, exchanging views on enhancing the bilateral strategic partnership. Chavez also visited the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) earlier on Thursday, the highest training institution for CPC officials. Addressing about 100 Chinese officials, he said the two countries witnessed great progress in their cooperation in economy, science and technology areas. Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) meets with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, on April 8, 2009 Speaking highly of China's development and its important role in tackling the global financial crisis, Chavez called for closer cooperation in such areas as investment, cadre exchanges and petroleum resources. Invited by President Hu, Chavez arrived in Beijing on Tuesday night. It is his sixth China trip since he was elected president in 1998.
BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its strong dissatisfaction over the new report by the U.S. Defense Department on China's military strength. Hu Changming, spokesman of China's Defense Ministry, said the report severely distorted facts, censured China's legitimate and normal national defence development, and disseminated the mainland's "so-called military threat" to Taiwan. "China is strongly dissatisfied with it and resolutely opposes it," said Hu. "China unswervingly sticks to a path of peaceful development and pursues a national defense policy which is purely defensive in nature." Hu noted that China is not in an arms race of any form and constitutes no threat to other countries. Hu said the report, which continued the dissemination of the "Chinese military threat" theory and severely distorted facts, was absolutely groundless. Hu said Sino-U.S. military ties have not yet completely moved out the difficult period as many obstructions still await to be got over. "The report, issued under such circumstance, could only bring negative influence to the resumption and development of bilateral military ties." "We urge the United States to stop issuing such a report on China's military strength and immediately take effective measures to dispel the baneful influence caused by the report so that bilateral military ties will incur no further damages," Hu added. The Pentagon on Wednesday released its annual report about the Chinese military repeating its complaint about "limited transparency." It questioned the "purposes and objectives" of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).
BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Thursday warned the need to find jobs for college graduates was "crucial". "The employment situation of college graduates remains grave," he told a video conference held by the State Council, the Cabinet. More than 6 million college students were leaving school in just three months and the employment rate was generally lower than previous years, Zhang said without elaborating. China has 6.11 million college students due to graduate this year, and 1 million from last year are still looking for jobs, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. Graduates are having a hard time finding jobs this year as posts are being axed due to the economic slowdown. Zhang urged government organs, government-sponsored institutions, and state-owned enterprises to hire as many people as last year, and small and medium-sized and private companies to employ college graduates. The State Council unveiled in February a series of measures to boost employment of college graduates, calling on them to be more flexible. The measures included encouraging graduates to work in rural areas, in grassroots urban communities, and in smaller enterprises, asking research institutions to recruit graduates, and stepping up support for graduates starting up their own businesses. Zhang asked local government departments to work out detailed and feasible measures and make efforts to publicize the measures this month. Government departments and higher learning institutions should provide comprehensive services to graduates by offering advice, giving aid to the poor, and maintaining a sound employment market, he said.
BEIJING, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has stressed on Tuesday the importance of studying and applying the Scientific Outlook on Development in the work of government organizations at all levels during the economic downturn. Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks here at a meeting on studying and applying the Scientific Outlook on Development. Xi urged government officials at all levels to summarize their working experiences, improve ruling sufficiency and correct mistakes. He said any concepts that were not compatible with or went against the Scientific Outlook on Development should be changed. He also urged that problems related to government officials' credibility and capability be solved to ensure that officials should be educated, scientific development sped up and people's demands met.
