SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three San Diego County schools have been recognized as 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools. The award honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools. Aviara Oaks Elementary School in Carlsbad, Del Mar Hills Academy in Del Mar and Torrey Pines Elementary School in San Diego were all honored with the award. “Congratulations to these schools that have tremendous programs dedicated to, and invested in, creating state-of-the-art learning and teaching environments,” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said. “This recognition is well-deserved, and special thanks go to the educators and the school communities that meet students’ unique needs in order for all of their students to reach their full potential.”Schools are recognized based on school-wide student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego International Airport expects an increase in travelers during the upcoming holiday season, even as cases of coronavirus surge in San Diego."We have seen an increase (in the past)," says Airport Spokesperson Nicole Hall. "So we are planning for that. We have additional flights leaving San Diego and anticipate an increase in the travel during that time."When the pandemic started, passenger travel at the San Diego International Airport dropped more than 90%. It has since recovered a bit. Airport officials say they're now down 67% from last year.With more people expected to fly over the holidays, the airport has increased it's efforts to make sure everyone who passes through it stays safe.They are requiring masks for every person in the airport. Signs shaped like surfboards help mark 6-foot social distancing requirements on the floor. Seats are marked as "off-limits." Plexiglass dividers line ticket counters and concession areas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands march along San Diego Bay in support of a variety of social issues Saturday.The fourth annual Women's March began at 10 a.m. at Waterfront Park, near the County Administration building at 1600 Pacific Highway. The rally focused on reproductive, disability and LGBTQ rights, and environmental justice issues, according to the march's website.Women's March San Diego aims to "harness the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative social change." The first Women's March was held in 2017, the day after President Donald Trump was sworn into office. It has since become a global event.The San Diego event hosted speeches by Kyra Green, executive director of the Center on Policy Initiatives; Misty Jones, San Diego Public library director; Tatum Tricarico, author and student; Kelsey Daniels, co-organizer for March for Black Women; Maleeka Marsden, organizer for Climate Action Campaign; Rosa López, executive board member of SEIU USWW; council member Andrea Cubitt; Darrah DiGiorgio Johnson, president of Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest; and Leticia Mungula, labor organizer. 1160

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Council is expected to vote Monday on a controversial proposal by a developer to build a large office park on land surrounded on three sides by the Del Mar Mesa Preserve. Residents who live nearby have been fighting the project and hope to convince the councilmembers to block it.The project, called "The Preserve at Torrey Highlands," would go on a piece of land south of Sr-56 at Camino Del Sur. Locals call the property "The Notch" and say it's a mystery why the 11-acre parcel was left out of protected zone when voters approved the Preserve in 1996.The best explanation, several residents told 10News, is that the land was owned by the Catholic Church, which planned to build on the property. The Church project was approved but never built and the Church sold the land in 2015.A spokesperson for the developer, Cisterra, told 10News that the land was always meant for development and that an office park is much-needed in the area: "The Preserve at Torrey Highlands will help grow the innovation economy by creating a place for nearly 2,000 high-quality, high-paying jobs."Opponents say voters intended any development on the land to be low-rise and fit the character of the neighborhood. 1235
