Several of President Donald Trump's outside advisers have told him over the past week he requires neither a chief of staff nor a communications director, at least in the traditional definition of those jobs, according to a person familiar with the conversations.Trump has absorbed the advice, but offered little indication whether he's interested in taking it, the person said. He's been warned by other confidants that it's impossible to run the West Wing without a chief of staff. There are no signs Trump is ready to dismiss top aide John Kelly. But the option of running his White House without a chief of staff has been planted in Trump's mind, and he's not rejected it outright, the person said. 708

ST. LOUIS -- The U.S. Coast Guard has referred the investigation into last month’s deadly sinking of a Missouri tourist boat to federal prosecutors. The accident occurred July 19 at Table Rock Lake near Branson, Missouri. An amphibious duck boat sank amid strong winds, killing 16 passengers and a crew member. Fourteen people survived.Nine of those victims were from on Indianapolis family. Tia Coleman and her nephew, Donovan were the only two members of their family to survive. The legal team for the Coleman family says it “supports the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation referral to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Western Missouri for criminal investigation." Adding, "All those who continue to grieve  support holding fully accountable those responsible for making the deadly decisions that resulted in the catastrophe.”Several investigations are still underway from the National Transportation Safety Board, the Coast Guard and the Missouri Attorney General’s Office. The duck boat attraction owner, Ripley Entertainment, says it is cooperating with the investigations. 1115

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — The son of a Spring Valley couple killed in an accident in Hawaii is honoring them by creating a space for others to find peace.“This isn’t going to get easier, it’s going to get harder," Joseph Harmes says as he talks about the death of his mom, Gladys, and step-father, George Novinger. The family was vacationing in Hawaii when Gladys and George were crossing a river and fell to their death in 2017. Now almost two years later, Harmes says he’s come to a cross roads with how he’s handling his grief.RELATED: San Diego man missing, wife dead after being swept over waterfall in Hawaii"I can either choose to be a victim of seeing my mom pass or I can make it my biggest reason to honor her in my actions," Harmes says.Though his mother has been honored by others with her work starting the House of Peru at Balboa Park, Harmes wants to honor her in a personal way. He’s doing so by creating the Hacienda Wellness Retreat Center on their property, the Vineyard Hacienda.Harmes says his mom always had a love for life, focusing on her mental, physical, and emotional needs. He wants to share that mentality with others. RELATED: Missing Chula Vista son surfaces in small Mexican town with no memory, mom saysThe center will feature life coaches, activities like yoga and physical training, and a quiet place to mediate and reflect.Guests will also learn a lot about Harmes’ mom with reminders of her all over the property, including a tiki statue that Harmes had made in honor of her because of her love for Hawaii — and a reminder of the last time he was with her. Another touch will be beautifying a koi pond which was a favorite spot for Gladys. He says she named a lot of the koi after aunts and uncles in Spain. But it’s the support Harmes says he doesn’t physically have anymore that reminds him every day of his loss. “I think the biggest thing I miss about her is that she was my biggest cheerleader," Harmes added. 1963

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - The Solana Beach City Council is the latest local government body to take up the gun control debate in the wake of recent mass shootings. On Wednesday night, the council passed Resolution 2018-036, which calls upon California Congressmen and women to pass gun safety regulations.Included in the resolution is official opposition to the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, currently making its way through Congress. That bill would force states to honor Concealed Carry Permits from other states, regardless of how strict or relaxed each state's regulations are.Other parts of the Solana Beach resolution call for:- Raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21- Banning the sale of military-style semiautomatic and automatic weapons- Banning the sale of high capacity magazines that hold more than 10 cartridges- Universal background checks- Mandatory safety training before buying a gun- A 10-day waiting period before taking possession of a gunYou can read the full text of the resolution here. The resolution makes Solana Beach the second city council in San Diego County to take up the issue. In January, a committee of the San Diego City Council passed a similar resolution.Meanwhile, the Del Mar City Council asked the Fairgrounds to consider ending the Crossroads of the West gun shows that take place there several times each year following protests at the event earlier this March. But gun rights advocates say moves like these are all grandstanding, and make the gun safety debate more divisive."I think the intention is to portray gun owners as dangerous and not law-abiding and it's just not true, it's the exact opposite," says Michael Schwartz, with the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC. He points out that other cities, like Santee, have voted to show support for concealed carry rights."Not welcoming law-abiding citizens from other states? I think that's a bad move," he says.Supporters of the resolution say this about more than gun safety. They say the act in Congress is a state's rights issue."The people of California have spoken and created our laws that are more stringent than this," says Nikki Faddick with San Diegans?4 Gun Violence Prevention. "This measure would gut those laws."The bill, co-sponsored by San Diego Congressmen Duncan Hunter and Darrell Issa, has already passed through the House of Representatives. It's currently waiting for a vote in the Senate. 2453

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., became the first Black and South Asian-American woman to accept the Democratic nomination for vice president Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention.Harris accepted the nomination from Wilmington, Delaware. Harris was officially picked by Joe Biden last week to be his running mate. Biden will accept the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday.Harris used her primetime address to introduce herself to millions of voters. The 55-year-old California senator has quickly ascended the hierarchy of the Democratic Party, and has the chance to become the second-most powerful person in the country come January.“[I am] committed to the values she [my mother] taught me, to the word that teaches me to walk by faith, and not by sight, and to a vision passed on through generations of Americans—one that Joe Biden shares,” Harris said. “A vision of our nation as a beloved community–where all are welcome, no matter what we look like, where we come from, or who we love.”Harris reminisced about her personal connection to the Biden family, through Joe Biden’s son Beau, who died in 2015.Following her official nomination, Biden joined Harris on the stage in Delaware, keeping his distance as a reminder of the ongoing pandemic.Warren’s subtle Black Lives Matter messageSen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who opposed both Harris and Biden for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president, offered her full support of the ticket. But what garnered the most attention was not what she said, but what was seen. Speaking from a classroom, Warren had three colorful letters behind her spelling out “BLM,” short for Black Lives Matter. 1672
