The House Committee on Labor and Education is holding a hearing on the topic of reopening schools amid the coronavirus pandemic on Thursday — about a week after Democrats on the committee said the White House blocked health officials from testifying during the hearing.Last Friday, CNN and Politico reported that Democrats' request to have CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield testify at the hearing was denied by the White House."Dr. Redfield has testified on the Hill at least four times over the last three months. We need our doctors focused on the pandemic response," an email from the White House to committee members read, according to CNN.Democrats claim that their request was for any high-ranking CDC official, not just Redfield. No Trump administration officials are testifying at Thursday's hearing. That includes Education Sec. Betsy DeVos, and members of the Coronavirus Task Force like Drs. Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx.According to the Committee's website, witnesses include Michael Hinojosa, the Superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District; Leslie Boggs, the president of the National Parent Teacher Association; Dr. Penny Schwinn, the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Education and Dr. Sean O'Leary, the Vice Chair of the Committee on Infectious Diseases at the American Academy of Pediatrics. 1340

The old king of mobile messaging is coming after the new king.BlackBerry filed a lawsuit in California on Tuesday against Facebook, along with its subsidiaries WhatsApp and Instagram, for infringing on its messaging patents.BlackBerry claims in the lawsuit that the social media companies developed messaging applications that "co-opt BlackBerry's innovations" by using patented features touching on security, the user interface, and battery life."We have a strong claim that Facebook has infringed on our intellectual property, and after several years of dialogue, we also have an obligation to our shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies," a spokesperson for BlackBerry said in a statement provided to CNN.Facebook brushed off the suit as little more than a desperate move from a fading company."Blackberry's suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business," Paul Grewal, Facebook's deputy general counsel, said in a statement. "Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, BlackBerry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight."Related: Is BlackBerry making a comeback?BlackBerry was an early leader in the messaging market with the success of its smartphones and BlackBerry Messenger product in the mid-2000s.The patents cited in the lawsuit describe foundational elements of today's messaging services. One patent deals with notifications for the total number of unread messages. Other patents address photo tagging and messaging time stamps.BlackBerry is seeking unspecified monetary damages. It also appears to be seeking a partnership."As a cybersecurity and embedded software leader, BlackBerry's view is that Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp could make great partners in our drive toward a securely connected future," the spokesperson said in the statement. "We continue to hold this door open to them."The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. All rights reserved. 1965

The incoming White House administration will have to handle dual public health crises, COVID-19 and racism.President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris met with the top civil rights leaders Tuesday night.During the meeting, Biden and Harris were commended on recent diverse picks for top cabinet positions, like retired Geb. Lloyd Austin as the country's first black Pentagon chief, and Rep. Marcia Fudge to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development.“And we want to ensure that that momentum and that progress is going to continue through the remainder of the appointments he makes,” said Marc Morial, President of the National Urban League.Morial says the meeting was candid and productive. He says his organization will support but also hold the administration accountable to their commitments on racial equity and it starts with COVID-19.“Ensuring that there's a plan to educate people in the community, to educate Black people and brown people about the process of the vaccine, about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, so people can make their own decision,” said Morial.A top concern among civil rights leaders is vaccine access. Morial says the distribution system shouldn't be solely reliant on chain pharmacies, hospitals and doctors.“To be able to distribute the vaccine at schools, at libraries, at community centers, why not use covered stadiums in some communities, that covered staples in places like Indianapolis and New Orleans and Houston,” said Morial. The head of the NAACP also asked the president-elect for a new national adviser position that would focus on creating policy centered around racial justice and equity. 1685

The Los Angeles Dodgers will play in the World Series for the second year in a row after defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 Saturday night in the seventh and deciding game of the National League Championship Series. The Dodgers will play the American League champion Boston Red Sox in the World Series, which begins Tuesday.Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when star hitter Christian Yelich tagged a 1-0 pitch from Los Angeles starter Walker Buehler for a home run.But the Dodgers' Cody Bellinger answered in the top of the second with a two-run blast after bunt hit by Manny Machado off Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin. That gave Los Angeles a 2-1 lead.Chacin only pitched two innings and reliever Josh Hader, who had 12 regular-season saves, pitched three strong innings, giving up just one hit and no runs, to keep the Brewers in the game. He struck out four of the 10 batters he faced. 924

The long-running TV show “Cops” is reportedly being pulled from the airwaves amid calls for police reforms throughout the United States.Variety was first to report the news. Paramount Networks has not confirmed the announcement to Scripps.Earlier this week, Cops opted to not air its new episode. Days before, similar police show “Live PD” decided not to run its two live episodes. Live PD has been one of the most-watched TV shows on Fridays and Saturdays since its 2016 debut. Following reports of Cops' demise, Live PD host Dan Abrams reassured fans of the show that Live PD would remain on A&E."All of us associated with the show are as committed to it as ever. We are still discussing some specifics but I want to assure the #LivePDNation that we are not abandoning you," Abrams tweeted.Cops began its run on the fledgling FOX network in 1989, being a huge boon for the young network. The program was unique for embedding cameras within police department, showing the work of officers throughout the US.But FOX dropped the program amid declining ratings, and was later picked up by Spike, which was later renamed Paramount Network.“Cops’ is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return,” a Paramount Network spokesperson said in a statement to Variety.Tuesday’s announcement was also reported by The Hollywood Reporter. 1383
