BEIJING, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, or China's cabinet, has approved a plan which calls for combining four key administrative districts of Beijing, the national capital, into two larger ones.According to the plan proposed by the Beijing Municipal Government, the former Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chongwen and Xuanwu districts at the core of Beijing will merge to form the new Dongcheng and Xicheng districts.The new Dongcheng District, composed of the former Dongcheng and Chongwen districts, would have an area of 41.84 square km and a permanent population of 865,000; the new Xicheng District, including the former Xicheng and Xuanwu districts, would cover 50.7 square km, with about 1.25 million residents, as outlined in the plan.The adjustment of Beijing's administrative divisions was aimed at balancing the development of the city's core districts, said a spokesman with the municipal government.Among the four core districts of Beijing, the development of Chongwen and Xuanwu in the south was lagging behind that of Dongcheng and Xicheng in the north, said the spokesman.The action could optimize the district' social resources, reduce administrative costs and enhance Beijing's core area, he said.Further, the move was expected to speed the renovation of Beijing's Old City, which basically included the four districts, and make for better protection of the historical cultural sites in the Old City, he said.The municipal government has been striving to achieve the transformation of Beijing into a "world city", which has a global influence in terms of politics, economy and culture, by 2050.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The world's most populous country is expanding its social security net as China's major social insurance program reached a new high for the number of people covered, official figures show.The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said on Thursday that the nation's urban pension insurance covered 235.5 million people by the end of 2009, an increase of 16.6 million over the beginning of that same year.In addition, 26.47 million migrant workers were also included, which was 2.31 million more migrants than at the start of 2009.Officials note that pension fund revenues topped 1.15 trillion yuan by the end of last year, up 18 percent year on year. BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese military forces are rushing to prevent disease in mudslide-devastated Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province as high temperatures hit the area where at least 1,156 people were dead.While giving medical treatment to 12,000 local residents, soldiers have also sterilized an area of 128,000 square meters in the disaster-hit county, Wang Wenjie, a senior officer with the Lanzhou Military Area Command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), said Friday.On Thursday, the Ministry of Health warned of disease-prevention challenges in Zhouqu, as dead bodies and dead animals entombed in the mud may easily decay in the hot weather.Although wells have been dug up to ensure water supply, the ministry said sterilization work is difficult as the water may be contaminated during transportation and storage.In order to ensure rescuers' health, more disinfectant and anti-sunstroke medicine has been dispatched to Zhouqu along with fresh clothing.While more equipment is en route to Zhouqu, Wang said more epidemic prevention workers are ready to go to Zhouqu if needed.Tuo Chengxiang, a senior officer with the Chinese People's Armed Police Force, said the main roads into the township are covered in sludge, hampering vehicular access to the area.A total of 6,281 soldiers and armed policemen are participating in the rescue and relief work in Zhouqu. TAIPEI, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The economic authority of Taiwan has approved investment totaling 77.13 million U.S. dollars from the Chinese mainland, according to a statistics report released Monday.From the end of June last year when Taiwan opened to mainland investment, the authority had approved 52 investment projects on the island by the end of May, said the report from the authority.The top three industries for mainland investment -- accounting for 44.84 percent of the total mainland investment -- were computers, electronics and optical products manufacturing.At the same time, the mainland saw a sharp increase in investment from Taiwan. In the first five months of this year, the Taiwan authority approved investments in 187 projects on the mainland.New investment from Taiwan on the mainland from January to May totalled 4.59 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 239.9 percent.About 75 percent of the Taiwan investment in the first five months went to Jiangsu, Guangdong, Fujian and Shandong provinces, said the report.
