WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden introduced his picks for several of his most senior economic advisers at a press event on Tuesday afternoon.The group includes liberal economists and policy specialists who established their credentials during the previous two Democratic administrations. Biden is placing a premium on diversity in his selection of Cabinet nominees and key advisers.For treasury secretary, Biden has nominated former Fed chair Janet Yellen. She would be the first woman to lead the Treasury Department in its 231 years of existence. She would also be the first person to serve as treasury secretary, chair of the Federal Reserve, and chair of the Council of Economic Advisers.In introducing Yellen, Biden called her the most qualified person for the job,citing her work at the Fed following the economic recession of the late '00s.In referencing the hit Broadway play "Hamilton," which centers around the life of the first Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, Biden joked that Lin Manual-Miranda would eventually need to write a musical based on Yellen's life.Biden has also tapped Neera Tanden to head the Office of Management and Budget. Tanden would be the first woman of color and the first South Asian woman to lead the agency that oversees the federal budget. She currently serves as President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, an organization dedicated to advancing policies that increase opportunity for Americans.Additionally, Biden has chosen Wally Adeyemo as his deputy treasury secretary. He previously served the in the Obama-Biden administration as deputy director of the National Economic Council and deputy national security advisor. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Joe Biden painted a very different picture of the COVID-19 pandemic than President Donald Trump during his first briefing as the nation's president-elect on Monday. "We are still facing a very dark winter," Biden said after a briefing with his advisers in Delaware. Biden announced a new COVID-19 advisory board. The group will be co-chaired by Dr. David Kessler, a former Food and Drug Administration commissioner; Dr. Vivek Murthy, a former surgeon general of the United States; and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, a public health professor at Yale University. "Please wear a mask," Biden implored those watching. WHAT WOULD CHANGE UNDER BIDEN When President-elect Biden takes office, more than just "presidential tone" will change. "They are going to allow the evidence to be back in the driver seat," said Dr. Jon Andrus, an adjunct professor of global health at The George Washington University. Some of the potential changes include: a national mask mandate, more guidance to governors and mayors, increased reliance on international health groups, and more testing and contact tracing. Waymo is starting to let the public take rides in its self-driving vans. This is the first commercial self-driving ride service to launch publicly, according to Waymo.For now, Waymo's definition of "the public" is a couple hundred pre-selected individuals in the Phoenix area. But Waymo is calling this is a small but important first step to launching an actual driverless ride sharing service.These initial users were all part of Waymo's "Early Rider" test program, so they've ridden in these vans before. The big difference is now they'll be allowed to invite others to ride with them — as many as four people can fit in the van — and they'll be able to speak publicly about the experience, including posting about it on social media.These customers will not be stepping into vans with empty driver's seats, though. While Waymo has given totally driverless rides to people as part of the private "Early Rider" program, for these more public rides, a Waymo employee will be in the driver's seat ready to take over if needed.Waymo is a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google's parent company.The service, called Waymo One, will operate 24 hours a day giving rides in the Phoenix area. Over time, the service will expand to cover more cities and be available to more riders than just the test group, Waymo CEO John Krafcik wrote in a blog post.Rides will be requested through an Uber-like smartphone app Waymo has created that will allow users to select pickup and drop-off locations and see a price estimate for the ride.
