SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Basic needs can be challenging to meet for homeless families or those living in shelters. As schools resume for students, distance learning can be even harder. Father Joes Villages is helping homeless students thrive this school year."We work with a population that is customarily at a disadvantage and has greater challenges, especially during these times of the pandemic," says Deacon Jim Vargas.It's been a challenge for the kids who aren't able to go to school. "In a sense, distance learning has isolated them even more," says Jennifer Ryan with the Therapeutic Children's Center at Father Joe's Villages."They don't have the financial resources, technological resources, other resources like those families that have homes," adds Vargas.The Therapeutic Children's Center provides a space for students to do their work."We have about 100 children that are in school. That's kindergarten all the way to 17-year-olds," says Ryan.Laptops and tablets are usually given to students by their schools. Father Joe's Villages makes sure they have access to the internet, school supplies, and more.Deacon Vargas says without the right intervention, these students are likely to repeat a grade or worse. "We know statistically that they are four times more likely to be homeless in adulthood."Father Joe's Villages has launched a new distance learning initiative to continue to provide resources to students. 1430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Padilla says he's tested positive for COVID-19.Padilla, who represents Chula Vista's District 3, made the announcement in video Saturday that was published on his Facebook page."After recently experiencing symptoms, I was diagnosed as being positive for the COVID-19 virus, also known as the coronavirus," he said.Padilla appeared in good spirits as he told viewers that he was doing "very well" and "feeling well."In a follow up statement, he described having a fever, body aches, headaches, chills, that "came on very rapidly." He noted he had come into contact with friends, colleagues, and the public over the last week."I’m in close coordination with County Public Health officials who are taking all precautions to ensure the health of people I’ve been in contact with," he said.He was recently in Santa Cruz County where he was conducting a hearing as California Coastal Commissioner."I want to remind everyone to keep a safe distance, wash hands, and look out for the elderly most at risk," he said.Padilla has previously served as Mayor of Chula Vista from 2002-2006, and is a former officer and detective with the Chula Vista Police Department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the weather across San Diego County warms, rattlesnakes are out if full force.Rattlesnakes live throughout Southern California and live in the deserts as well as along the coast, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The department says most bites happen from April to October when the snakes and people are most active outdoors. RELATED: Deadly backyard encounter could point to dangerous snake season“Snakes really get an unfair bad rap, when they actually play an important role in California’s ecosystems,” said CDFW’s Keep Me Wild program coordinator Lesa Johnston. The potential of running into a rattlesnake shouldn’t deter anyone from enjoying the great outdoors, the department adds. According to the California Poison Control System, the chances of being bitten are small when compared with the risk of other environmental injuries. RELATED: What to do if you or a pet are bitten by a rattlesnake“Like most wild animals, snakes prefer to keep to themselves and are not naturally aggressive. Taking the time to learn about safety precautions before going outdoors can make all the difference,” Johnston added. The department says rattlesnakes generally aren’t aggressive and will likely retreat if given room and not provoked or threatened. “Most bites occur when a rattlesnake is handled or accidentally brushed against by someone walking or climbing,” the department says on their website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Chris Cate may soon feel like the loneliest politician in San Diego.Come December, he'll likely be the only Republican on the otherwise Democratic San Diego City Council. That’s because it appears Democrats will secure an 8-1 advantage on the City Council, based on returns from Tuesday’s election.“We'll have to figure out a new path going into election two years from now and another election two years after that,” Cate said.Cate is a San Diego native who represents the city's North Central areas. The jobs are technically nonpartisan, but divides do show when it comes to key votes on housing development, city contracting, and public safety. Cate says he won't be shy.“And really try to ensure that we as a government are mindful of the fact that we rely on taxpayer dollars to provide those resources, and not try to go back to the well multiple times to increase fees or taxes,” Cate said.Cate describes himself as a fiscal conservative and social moderate. He joined the council in 2014, when Democrats had a 5-4 advantage over Republicans. Democrat registration has exploded since then, with some politicians abandoning the Republican Party.Termed out Councilman Mark Kersey is now an independent, and State Assemblyman Brian Maienschein flipped to a democrat.But Cate says he'll never leave the party.“Absolutely not… 100%, no,” he said.Being the lone Republican on the council could also raise Cate’s political profile. For instance, many times he'd be the only alternative viewpoint for journalists to ask for comment. Cate said, however, that he's not seeking higher office.
