CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Wednesday, the City of Chula Vista filed a lawsuit against the Monsanto Company for chemical contamination. In the lawsuit filed by a law firm named Baron and Budd, the city says chemicals known as PCBs manufactured by Monsanto, now known as Bayer, have escaped into the city’s municipal stormwater system, leading the city to spend substantial amounts of money on cleanup.PCBs are known to cause a number of health issues in humans, such as cancer and damage to the immune system.RELATED: Jury awards 9 million in damages after man says he got terminal cancer from Monsanto's RoundupMonsanto was the sole manufacturer of the chemicals in the US between 1935 and 1979, when the chemicals were banned by the federal government.“Monsanto needs to stop playing games and accept responsibility for cleaning up the mess it’s made,” said Baron & Budd Shareholder, John Fiske. “Chula Vista is the latest city to recognize that PCB cleanup costs shouldn’t be passed on to its citizens, and I anticipate more cities and states will continue to follow suit.”RELATED: Bayer buys seed company Monsanto for billionThe chemicals were used numerous of commercial and industrial applications like paint, electric transformers, cable coatings, sealants and lubricants.Scientists say PCBs can’t be contained to their original applications so, when it rains, the chemicals escape into stormwater systems that wash into bodies of water, such as the bay.The law firm representing Chula Vista also represents San Diego, San Jose, Oakland, Berkley, Long Beach and several other cities in the Pacific Northwest in similar lawsuits. 1680

CINCINNATI -- Don’t drive through floodwaters, folks. Floodwaters along the Ohio River reduced a man’s pickup truck to a bobber Sunday afternoon when he tried to drive through water on the corner of Kibby Lane and Gracely Drive. Videos show the man climbing out through the driver’s side window. Luckily, he was safe. Driving on a flooded roadway is exceptionally dangerous, and driving on a closed roadway is illegal. Motorists can be ticketed up to ,000 for driving through barricades in Ohio. The National Weather Service says a mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water is enough to knock over a full-grown adult, and that just a foot of rushing water can carry away a small car. Two feet of rushing water is forceful enough to float away almost any SUV or pickup truck. Standing water over roadways can also harbor hidden dangers such as sharp objects, live electrical wires or chemicals. 937

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — The beauty industry is one of the many sectors that are being forced to shut down again after the state's new stay-at-home order goes into effect Sunday night. Many business owners are frustrated, feeling as though they are being unfairly punished.Open for now, but not for long. Instead of appointment confirmations, Boudoir Nail Bar in Chula Vista is making appointment cancellations again.RELATED: County urges San Diegans to heed new health orders as COVID-19 cases surge'The rules are changing once again' Mayor Kevin Faulconer responds to Newsom's new shutdowns"Literally, we are in limbo," owner, Nora Neff, said. The salon has already had to shut down twice since March. Since then, Neff has had to invest thousands of dollars in personal protective equipment, sanitation supplies, and filtration devices. Each time she has lost income, staff, and hope."Obviously, we are not talking about profit because that's been long gone since March," Neff sighed. "We're just talking about survival."Nail salons are just one of the many industries that are being forced to shut down completely starting 11:59 pm Sunday. According to the new State rules, they will be closed for at least three weeks.Others industries that must shut down completely include:Hair salons and barbershopsPersonal care servicesBars, breweries, distilleries, and wineriesMuseums, zoos, and aquariumsMovie theaters and entertainment centersIndoor and outdoor playgroundsCardrooms and satellite wageringCustomer, Stevie Jamison, says she feels lucky to get an appointment Saturday, right before the shutdown. But she feels terrible for the staff, who will become jobless again during the holidays."I'm here to support them and their business more than anything," Jamison said.Supervisor Jim Desmond disagrees with the State's umbrella approach regarding the shutdown."Use a surgical method as opposed to a grenade, going in and shutting down an entire sector," Desmond said.Neff suggests a case-by-case approach."Just do random inspections to random businesses," Neff said. "If people are not following the protocol, you shut those businesses down. It’s playing with people's lives at this point.”Desmond released a statement on Saturday, saying in part he did not believe San Diego County should be included with several other Southern California counties: 2366
