BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Vice-Premier Li Keqiang visited the 2008 China Beijing International Energy-Saving and Environmental Protection Exhibition on Monday.     Li, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, spoke highly of the achievements made by the country and the national capital in terms of energy efficiency and pollution reduction.     LI said China has large potential in the resources and environmental sector and it should focus on energy efficiency and environmental protection. BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- An artistic performance was staged in Beijing on Monday night to mark the 110th anniversary of the birth of late Chinese leader Liu Shaoqi.     Li Changchun and Vice President Xi Jinping, who are members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, watched the performance together with more than 2,000 people of various walks of life in the National Center for the Performing Arts.     The performance was composed of five parts to show Liu's dedication and contribution to the cause of the Party and the people in different revolution and construction periods.     Liu was born on Nov. 24, 1898, in Ningxiang County of Hunan Province, central China. He was one of the earliest members of the CPC, joining the Party in 1921, shortly after its founding. In the following years, he served at many important positions in the Party.     Liu was elected vice chairman of the central people's government in September 1949, just before the founding of New China. Later he was elected chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. In April 1959, he was elected chairman of the People's Republic of China.     Severely persecuted during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1977), Liu died of illness in Kaifeng of Henan Province on Nov. 12, 1969. CHENGDU, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's central government has pledged to help its Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) to cope with the impact of the ongoing international financial crisis.     It was revealed by Vice Premier Li Keqiang when meeting the SAR's Chief Executive Ho Hau Wah in Chengdu, capital of southwest Sichuan Province on Sunday.     Ho arrived here on Sunday, leading a delegation of the SAR to attend the Ninth Western China International Economy and Trade Fair.     The Vice Premier said the central government would give all-out support to the SAR's Chief Executive and government in administration in line with laws. It would actively assist the SAR's government to maintain stability and prosperity of the region.     Li also praised the SAR's government for promoting Macao's exchange and cooperation with the country's inland regions and hoped that Macao could make more contribution to economic construction and development in China's western region.

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has vowed the Chinese people will, as always, work together with the international community to promote healthy development of the human rights cause in the world.     Hu made the remarks in a letter to the China Society for Human Rights Studies on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the publication of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.     He said China will strengthen international cooperation, as it has always done, in the human rights field to make its due contribution to the building of a harmonious world featuring lasting peace and common prosperity.     China, however, will base its human rights development on the basic situation of the country while acknowledging the universal value of human rights, Hu said in the letter.     The country will prioritize people's rights to existence and development in its socialist modernization drive and ensure, in accordance with law, the equal rights to participation and development of all society members, Hu said, stressing the principle of "people first".     Citing the enshrinement of human rights in the Constitution, Hu said the country has recorded a new chapter of human rights development since the founding of New China and especially since the reform and opening-up 30 years ago, which has been witnessed by the whole world.

 BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China hopes to work with the United States to maintain a healthy and stable relationship which benefits the people of both countries and the world, said Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo on Wednesday.     "Sino-U.S. relations are at a crucial point linking the past to the future," Dai told the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte, who was here to honor the 30th anniversary of Sino-U.S. relations.     Dai said China and the U.S. shared common interests and consolidated a strategic foundation. This paved the way for further development of the relationship.     He summarized four achievements in Sino-U.S. relations made during the Bush administration.     --The two countries confirmed the relationship as stakeholders and constructive cooperators.     --The two heads of state maintained frequent contacts.     --High-level strategic dialogues were institutionalized to promote mutual trust and cooperation.     --Cooperation in all areas deepened such as major international and regional issues.     "Sino-U.S. relations have made remarkable progress over the past three decades and this linked the two countries closely," Dai said.     Negroponte said both the U.S. and China were important countries in the world and needed more dialogue and cooperation to safeguard global security and stability.     The strategic dialogue and the strategic and economic dialogue were two effective mechanisms and should be continued, he said.
