BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), China's largest lender by market value, announced Thursday that it has completed its 44.9 billion yuan(about 6.75 billion U.S. dollar) rights issue in Shanghai and Hong Kong.The dual-listed lender said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange that it had raised 13.04 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 11.18 billion yuan) from the Hong Kong portion of its rights issue by selling 3.74 billion shares at a price of 3.49 Hong Kong dollars.The Beijing-based bank said it had sold 11.3 billion shares at 2.99 yuan in the Shanghai market, which was 99.72 percent subscribed and had raised 33.67 billion yuan in late November.The ICBC said the fund raising aimed to replenish its capital base.The bank's core capital adequacy ratio stood at 9.33 percent by the end of September this year, while its capital adequacy ratio was 11.57 percent. In the first three quarters of this year, the ICBC saw net profits up 27.1 percent year on year to 127.8 billion yuan.Shares of the bank closed flat at 4.18 yuan in Shanghai and was down 0.35 percent to 5.7 Hong Kong dollars in Hong Kong.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Darfur issue, saying that efforts should be made to remove the root causes that resulted in such an issue.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counselor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."Currently, it is very important to maintain security and stability in Darfur," Yang said. "It is hoped that all parties to the Darfur conflict can solve their differences in a peaceful manner through political dialogue, and reconciliation should be achieved and violence avoided.""Achieving substantial result at an early date of the Darfur peace process and reaching a comprehensive political agreement represents a basic guarantee for the long-term peace and stability in Darfur," he said."Without a robust political process, there would be no peace and stability in Darfur, neither would there be the protection of civilians, humanitarian assistance, economic recovery and reconstruction," he said."We once again urged the armed groups which have not yet joined the Doha political process to do so immediately without any conditions," he said.As a mediator of the Darfur peace process, Doha has brokered several rounds of talks between Khartoum and rebel groups over the past years.The Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur, he said. TAIPEI, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Procedures of cross-Strait talks had become more "simplified" and the results "more tangible" after five talks over the last two-and-half years, said chairman of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) Friday in Taipei.Chiang Pin-kung told a press conference that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan were expected to sign a medical and health cooperation agreement at the upcoming talks between the SEF and the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), scheduled Tuesday.Regarding a cross-Strait investment protection agreement, he said the two sides had "reached a preliminary consensus" on it, but still needed time to further exchange views since it was "complicated" and "concerned a wide range of issues."The investment protection agreement is an important part of the follow-up negotiations after the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) took effect in September.Chiang said the SEF and the ARATS would "continue to discuss" it in order to reach a deal as soon as possible, as "it is related to people's interests."The talks will be the sixth round since the two organizations, authorized by the mainland and Taiwan to handle cross-Strait affairs, resumed negotiations in June 2008 after an 11-year suspension.About 560 reporters, including more than 400 from Taiwan, 60 from the mainland, as well as those from Hong Kong, Macao and foreign countries, will cover the event.Chiang said a mainland delegation, led by the ARATS executive vice president Zheng Lizhong, was scheduled to arrive in Taipei on Sunday and would hold a preparatory negotiation with SEF vice chairman and secretary general Kao Koong-lian, to decide the agenda of the talks.ARATS president Chen Yunlin and his wife are expected to arrive in Taipei Monday morning. The two sides are scheduled to hold talks on Tuesday morning and sign the medical and health cooperation agreement in the afternoon.Chen and his wife will also visit Taipei's National Palace Museum and the Taipei International Flora Expo, before leaving Wednesday noon.Chiang said next year would mark the 20th anniversary of the SEF's establishment. "The development of cross-Strait relations is hard-won, and the cross-Strait talks are a reflection of people first, care for people's livelihoods and mutual benefits."

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland will continue working with Taiwan to expand and deepen cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, a spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said Sunday.Commenting on mayoral elections in the island's five cities, which concluded Saturday, spokeswoman Fan Liqing said the mainland had "paid close attention" to the results.The mainland would steadily promote cross-Strait relations and improve the living standards of people on both sides, she said."We hope Taiwan society is stable and people live and work in peace," she said.Fan said that over the past two years, improved cross-Strait relations had brought tangible benefits to people on both sides, and the peaceful development of relations had become common ground.Of the five mayoral elections, the ruling Kuomintang won three while the opposition Democratic Progressive Party won two.
