SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of workers are racing to finish construction of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's newest exhibit, "Walkabout Australia".It is scheduled to open to the public Friday, May 25. Monday, 10News was the first station invited for a behind-the-scenes tour. The various habitats are meant to reflect the deserts, plains, and rainforests of Australia.But the heart of the exhibit is a large open area in which 20 kangaroos and wallaby will be able to roam free with Safari Park guests."I think that the public will feel like there's virtually no barriers almost on the walkway going up and when they get inside. They're just going to have so much fun," said San Diego Zoo architect Robyn Badger.Zookeepers have been working with the animals before the exhibit opens, getting them comfortable with their new habitat and with being around humans.The kangaroos and wallaby are likely to approach guests on the path. If it happens, guests are asked to stay calm and avoid harassing the animals.While people are not encouraged to reach out to touch the animals first, if the animals make contact, it is okay to gently pet them."If you're calm and you're respectful of those animals, they're absolutely going to want to come and see what you're up to," said Animal Care Manager Steve Metzler.Other animals at Walkabout Australia include tree kangaroos, magpie geese, and cassowary. 1398

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For the first time in decades, the Port of San Diego is putting forth a comprehensive update to its master plan. A port spokesperson says the effort began in 2013 and has been a very thoughtful and open process. However, some residents in the county are just learning about the plan. In April, the Port published a more than 300-page draft of the master plan. "Ninety percent of the people that we speak to had no idea that this plan had been put forth. We have been out at the local grocery stores, going door-to-door, we've been posting here on the path because these are the places where we're going to reach the people who use this area the most," said Cameron Lilley, a lifelong Point Loma resident. Lilley has significant concerns with Shelter Island proposals, including:Up to 1600 new hotel rooms70,000 square feet of retail and restaurant spaceRemoving private and historic docks"Parking is a huge issue already, bringing more tourism to this area will negatively impact the residents who live and use it," said Lilley.On Tuesday she was joined by family and friends at La Playa Trail, encouraging people to give feedback to the Port by the July 31 deadline. They've created a group, Save Point Loma, to try and educate the community. "We're all out here united in this cause," said Lilley.The Port says it has been very transparent throughout the entire process, not only making the draft available to the public but holding community meetings. A spokesperson tells 10News they've used social media, the radio, and community paper ads to try and get people involved. And the Port says it wants to hear from the community moving forward. After receiving initial feedback, they will continue to hold community meetings and will later put forth a revised draft. The comment period for the Master Plan draft goes through July 31. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters responded Tuesday afternoon after a brush fire broke out near Scripps Mercy Hospital Tuesday afternoon. According to fire crews, the fire broke near northbound SR-163 and Washington Street. At this time it's unclear what caused the fire. Heavy smoke could be seen coming from the area as passersby drove on the roadway.  381

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Explosions rang out Thursday and Friday at an ocean view La Jolla home where FBI agents served a search warrant. Agents were checking the house at 625 Wrelton Drive in an ongoing investigation when they came across “certain materials,” said FBI Special Agent Davene Butler. The County of San Diego Hazardous Incident Response Team (HIRT) and San Diego Fire-Rescue were contacted for help to detonate and dispose of unstable chemicals. The material could not be safely moved from the neighborhood, Butler said. On Thursday, people who live near the home were evacuated for their safety, according to the FBI. On Friday, they were told to shelter in place. The bomb squad detonated Perchloric Acid in the backyard around 1 p.m."The reason we're blowing them up is, if they are handled improperly, they can blow up on their own," said Robert Wise, of the Environmental Protection Agency. Federal search warrants show a man named Alex Jvirblis owned the home. Jvirblis passed away in August.
