SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A car carrier truck slammed into a hydrant Tuesday evening in Pacific Beach, sending a geyser spewing into the air as passersby took in the spectacle.The incident happened on the 2700 block of Garnet Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Authorities say the driver hit the hydrant before immediately pulling over and remaining at the scene.San Diego Fire-Rescue arrived to stop the hydrant from shooting water onto nearby businesses.Many nearby businesses closed for the day as San Diego Police and San Diego Fire-Rescue went door-to-door to find out what, if any damage had been done.At this time, it's unclear what led to the crash. 649

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 96-year-old family secret reveals a piece of the Carlsbad school district’s history. Florence Oliver has lived in San Diego her whole life."I was born at SD General at that time, but of course I don't remember it!" The family settled down in Carlsbad, and for Florence, family is everything. For the last century, her family hung on to another memory. A brass bell from the Carlsbad School which rung daily for class.In 1922, Florence's uncles stole stole the bell to pull off a prank on her mother's wedding night. "They hung it, in those days you had those wire springs on bed to hold mattresses, they hung it underneath, no one knew… so the bell really rang loud!"Rather than return the bell, it stayed in the family - first handed down to Florence's oldest brother, and then the next brother, and eventually to her."What does it mean to me, it's just a piece of our life, and it's gone through our family, it's like it's related."One day, Florence had a conversation with her niece. "She said Dad used to go in the garage and she told me that bell needs to go home, that would make him very proud."So last month, Florence made good on her promise. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A dog walk in South Park turned frantic as a couple tries to fend off a bee attack that didn't end when they got inside their home.Grape Street, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Patricia Young, her husband, and two dogs were near Marlton drive, just about done with their walk, when one of the dogs started sniffing a bush."All of a sudden I felt a really sharp stabbing in my arm. Then I heard buzzing near my eye and swatted at it. That’s when my husband started to get stung," said Young.Young says she didn’t see a swarm but heard a constant, loud buzzing."My husband is swatting and his glasses fall of. I pick them up, and he’s getting attacked ... Take my mask off and swing it around my back, and I get stung on my back," said Young.Young says her husband picked up one of the dogs, and they scrambled to get home, about 2 blocks away."We’re kind of yelping and squealing and swatting, and then get home, and it's that sense of, 'We’re safe,'" said Young,Not so fast. Inside the home, she found a bee on one of the dogs, and then one in the bathroom."When I came out to the kitchen, the bees were congregating in the light in the kitchen," said Young.In the end, they killed about eight bees. Their nine-year-old Maltese mix had to be treated by a veterinarian for a possible sting. Both Young and her husband stung several times"It's a freaky, terrible thing to be chased by bees into your home," said Young.Jeff Lutz, the owner of Bee Best Bee Removal, says a two-block chase is unusual, adding that "hot temperature can make bees more active," as they bring in water to keep the hive cool.It’s unclear if the bees were Africanized bees, which would require a DNA test to determine.Lutz says bee removal calls are down significantly this year but attributes that to the impact of COVID-19. 1812

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Carlsbad mother believes the social isolation created by the pandemic was one factor in the suicide attempt of her 11-year-old son.A photo shows Jessie, 11, playing tetherball outside her home two Thursdays ago. Hours after the photo was taken, his mother Tara says her son vomited.Soon after, an ambulance was rushing him to the hospital. In her kitchen cupboard was a nearly empty Costco-sized bottle of ibuprofen."It was a 500-pill bottle, and we estimate he took 400 pills," said Tara.At the hospital, Jesse couldn't breathe on his own. His kidneys failed, but doctors were able to save Jesse."It's a miracle, so thankful," said a tearful Tara.The grateful mother is now in search of answers. She talked to her son in the hospital."He said he didn't see that there was much worth living for. He felt like there were too many things stacked up against him," said Tara.Tara believes one of those things has been the social isolation caused by the pandemic. After his family moved, Jesse ended up after a new school in the fall. Tara says his old friends 'ghosted' him."I would encourage him to try to make friends in the neighborhood, and he'd say things like 'Why bother?'" said Tara.Tara thought he was just getting adjusted. Stan Colllins, a suicide prevention specialist with the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council, says social isolation can cut kids off from the support they lean on to deal with stressors, big and small."We do have data to show there has been an increase in suicidal thoughts among youth," said Collins.In Jesse's case, those thoughts led to action. Tara says she's sharing her family's story in hopes of helping another family."Please lock up your medicaton ... Talk to your kids and see how they're doing.
