SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican whose term ends next month, revealed he is considering running for governor in an interview Thursday with the Los Angeles Times.The race will be tough for any Republican, according to political analyst John Dadian, because registered Democrats far outnumber Republicans in California. Those registered with no party preference also outnumber Republicans. “The uphill is he’d have to pull in all the people that are neither democrat or republican, but it’s certainly possible," Dadian said.According to Dadian, many political pundits consider Faulconer to be the most viable Republican in a general election, citing his record as a moderate mayor who frequently cross the aisle to work with Democrats on issues such as climate change. Faulconer's PAC raised more than 0,000 in the first half of the year, with the biggest donations coming from outside San Diego, which Dadian says is another indication of Faulconer's viability.Dadian says he expects Faulconer to spend much of his time traveling the state once he leaves office to build his profile and introduce himself to voters away from his home base. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police confirmed Monday the arrest of a Yuma, Arizona police officer on suspicion of rape.Yuma Police officer Jared Elkins, 33, was taken into custody Friday morning on Marlborough Dr. near Adams Ave. in Kensington.San Diego Police said Elkins was off duty at this time of his arrest. He is a 7-year veteran of the force, the Associated Press reported.  Yuma Police are working to place Elkins on administrative leave.Elkins will be charged with rape, oral copulation, threat to do bodily harm, sex asault with a foreign object, and misdemeanor sexual assault, police said.Elkins was released on 0,000 bail Saturday and ordered to appear in court on Sept. 25. 709

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County Fire is offering some residents key safe boxes that allow first responders to gain access to homes in emergency situations, County News Center reports.The boxes, called KnoxBoxes, are installed on or near the front door and can only be opened by local firefighters responding to life-threatening emergencies, the county says.County Supervisor Dianne Jacob says the program fulfills an urgent need.“For older folks with chronic health conditions or in need of help with basic activities, KnoxBoxes can be a lifesaver,” said Jacob. “These devices can also provide some peace of mind in a region where wildfire is a year-round threat.”County Fire received a federal grant to help purchase 200 boxes. The county plans to loan the boxes to residents in rural communities.So far, the county says it has received 70 applications. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer signed off Thursday on his .3 billion 2020 budget previously approved by the super majority of the city council.The budget funds the largest infrastructure investment in San Diego’s history and includes more funding for homelessness programs, road repairs, tree trimming services and housing reform.Faulconer appeared to be most excited about the expansion of the Clean San Diego initiative, which aims to clear debris from across the city.The mayor announced during his signing ceremony that million will go toward the expansion of the CSD program, and more crews will be hired to clean up areas citywide 24 hours a day, seven days a week.“We’re restoring pride back in our neighborhoods with every cleanup job, and now we’re investing more resources into ‘Clean SD’ so we can do even more for our communities,” said Faulconer.Funding for the program was more than doubled from Fiscal Year 2019 after Faulconer requested an additional .5 million for its budget.Since the program started in May 2017, more than 3,600 tons of debris have been removed from neighborhoods, canyons, and the San Diego River.Other efforts in the program include an increase in street sweeping in the East Village, sanitizing sidewalks, and graffiti removal. 1302

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County officials say they are taking additional steps regarding employers linked to outbreaks.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the county will update its public health order to state "entities shall notify employees of an outbreak that occurred at a physical location where they work."Fletcher added that the county believes most businesses are acting responsibly and notifying employees.
