BEIJING, April 17 (Xinhua) -- China is disappointed the European Union (EU) has decided to launch an anti-subsidy investigation into imported Chinese coated paper, Ministry of Commerce (MOC) spokesman Yao Jian said Saturday."China will closely follow this issue and reserves its right to take necessary measures in accordance with WTO rules," Yao said.He said the coated paper probe is the EU's first anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese products.The EU launched an anti-dumping investigation on Chinese coated paper two months ago, he said.Increased trade protectionism is a major threat to the world economy recovery, Yao said."To create a win-win situation, China and the EU should settle trade disputes cooperatively," he added.MOC data shows the EU initiated seven anti-dumping investigations against China in 2009.The EU is China's largest trade partner, with bilateral trade volume exceeding 360 billion U.S. dollars last year.

DONGXIANG, Jiangxi, May 23 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed in east China's Jiangxi Province when a passenger train derailed after being hit by landslides at Sunday dawn, railway authorities said.The train, bound for the tourist city of Guilin in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from Shanghai, derailed at around 2:10 a.m. in Dongxiang county, Fuzhou city in Jiangxi, the Ministry of Railways said in a press release. At least ten passengers were injured.Xinhua reporters who rushed to the scene saw the locomotive, plus eight of the 17 carriages of the train -- coded K859 -- derailed and some even overturned in the mountainous area of Jiangxi. BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China opposes the U.S. decision to set final duties of up to more than 200 percent on imports of steel gratings from China, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement Wednesday.This came after the U.S. Commerce Department Tuesday announced final anti-dumping duties of 136.76 to 145.18 percent on the gratings to "offset below-market pricing." It also set a countervailing duty of 62.46 percent.MOC said the United States had acted "discriminatorily" in the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation and made the wrong conclusion, and China is dissatisfied and is opposed to this.Such move could hurt the interests of China, which both Chinese government and enterprises would not accept, the ministry said.China urged the U.S. to take effective measures to correct the mistake, it said.According to the U.S. trade remedy procedure, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) will also make its final injury determination about the product soon.If the ITC makes affirmative final determinations that imports of steel gratings from China materially injure, or threaten material injury to, the domestic industry, the Commerce Department will issue anti-dumping duties and countervailing duties orders.In 2009, the United States imposed a series of trade remedy measures on Chinese products, and the value involved was eight times more than that in 2008, the MOC statement said."Such action not only hurts the interests of China, but also has an adverse impact on bilateral economic and trade ties," it said.China hoped the United States could show restraint in using trade remedy measures and act to fight trade protectionism, it said.

BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) -- China's outstanding external debt reached 428.6 billion U.S.dollars by the end of 2009, up 14.4 percent from a year earlier, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) said here in a statement on its website Tuesday.The figure excluded Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Macao SAR, and Taiwan.The country's registered foreign debt was equivalent to 266.95 billion U.S. dollars by the end of last year, up 2.5 percent from the 2008 level. Outstanding trade credits stood at 161.7 billion U.S.dollars, according to SAFE.China's foreign debt service ratio was 2.87 percent, while the foreign debt ratio and liability ratio stood at 32.15 percent and 8.73 percent, respectively, SAFE said.Mid- and long-term external debt, accounting for 39.52 percent of all outstanding foreign debt, totaled 169.39 billion U.S.dollars by 2009, most of which came from manufacturing and infrastructure construction in transportation, storage and postal services, it said.Short-term external debt rose 23 percent to 259.26 billion U.S.dollars year on year by the end of 2009, accounting for 60.48 percent of the total.New mid- and long-term debt in 2009 declined 38.18 percent to 22.45 billion U.S.dollars from a year earlier.China repaid principals for mid- and long-term loans of 34.19 billion U.S. dollars and 3.63 billion U.S. dollars in interest in 2009, up 46.78 percent and down 12.64 percent year on year, respectively, said SAFE.
