Food banks around the country are overwhelmed. It has become normal in recent months to see hundreds of people or cars in a line stretching for miles outside food banks and pantries. Some people are even beginning to show up hours before scheduled food distributions."I came here at 11 o'clock and there was already three people in front of me,” said Michael Sell, who waited outside a drive-thru food pantry that opened at 1 p.m. near Springfield, Massachusetts.Sell is a retired mental health professional, who now relies on pantries in the region. He says he’s seen the pantry lines grow for months."It is almost incomprehensible how many people are hurting,” Sell added.“Every distribution we are running is out of food, and I am calling suppliers, and I'm calling food banks like, 'we need more food’,” said Robin Bialecki, with the Easthampton Community Center.Bialecki also works with the Western Massachusetts Food Bank to hold a drive-thru pantry several times a month. Every month the pandemic goes on, it has become more difficult to provide enough food for all the people in her community in need. There have been times where the pantry has had to ask people to take less food so they could help more families.“A lot of people who normally give during the holiday season, they're keeping that food,” said Bialecki. “They have lost their jobs.”Some people who used to donate regularly are now seeking help from her pantry. In the 19 years that she has organized pantry food distributions, she has never seen a need at this level.“We definitely hope we do not get to the point where we will not be able to feel the need,” said Bialecki.In the next few weeks, if Congress does not pass a stimulus package, it is estimated that at least 12 million Americans will lose their unemployment benefits, and 11 to 13 million people could be evicted from their homes. Four Toledo, Ohio, teenagers who pleaded guilty to killing a man when they dropped a sandbag from a highway overpass have been ordered to a youth treatment facility, a court official said."The youth treatment center is a lockdown facility in Toledo. The program runs six months, but there is no set time to release. The average youth spends eight months there," Lori Olender, juvenile division deputy chief for the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office, said in an email.Besides being ordered to the youth treatment facility, the teenagers were given four-year suspended sentences, placed on probation and ordered to perform 30 hours of community service, Olender said.One was charged with murder and felonious assault and three were charged with involuntary manslaughter and vehicular vandalism, she said. All four pleaded guilty.The youths were charged after a sandbag dropped from an interstate overpass crashed through the window of a vehicle below and hit Marquise Byrd, 22, on December 19, 2017. He died later at a hospital.Three of the teens were 14 when the incident happened and one was 13, authorities said. FedEx said Monday they are planning to hire 70,000 seasonal workers as they head into the holidays.In a hiring statement on its website, the shipping company said most of those hired for its "peak season" would be added to its FedEx Ground network."As our team of more than 500,000 team members is busy preparing to deliver the holidays, we once again expect to see a large number of packages traverse our global network over the 2020 peak holiday shipping season," FedEx said. Forget the shirt and shoes; no service for people on horseback at Starbucks in Anthem, Arizona. A Valley girl is frustrated after trying to ride her horse through the drive-thru when the barista said nay. Aspen Cline had seen internet videos of others riding their horses through the Starbucks drive-thru and decided that's what she wanted to do for her birthday. Instead, she and her horse, Scout, were shut down by the barista who apparently wasn't into horsing around. "We weren't given a reason, just, "we can't take your order," said Aspen. "My friend and I were going to get frappuccinos for us and a cup of whipped cream for the horses." A Starbucks spokesperson told us, officially, their drive-through is for cars only. He said that policy is for animal, rider and employee safety. But, he also added that the horses caught the barista off guard and with a little-advanced notice next time they'll find a way to serve all creatures."We support Starbucks because they're very accepting," said Tandy Cline, Aspen's mom.
