SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Shane Harris is a civil rights activist based in San Diego and also the president and founder of The People’s Alliance for Justice. He said after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, a conversation started among activists and he was called to go to the epicenter of the tragedy. He brought with him ,000 to donate to the Floyd family, money that was possible thanks to a match from Mark Arabo and Sam Nejabat. Harris spent the weekend following the killing in Minneapolis, meeting with other activists, leading and participating in protests, visiting the site where the killing happened and also talking to the Floyd family. He said the Floyd family impressed him with their desire to end the violence and now move forward with active change. Harris stood behind the Floyd family as they addressed the world, offering support as George Floyd’s brother spoke. “He was really focused on peace. What do we need to do to resolve these issues in America? How do we address reform moving forward? How do we put an aggressive plan together?” said Harris. Harris is returning to San Diego Tuesday evening and is bringing with him that message of active change. “Enough is enough, we need deliverables for our community. The looters and the rioters are not where the message should be focused, but it should be focused on black-led organizations and institutions that gravely need support from our allies,” said Harris. He said there are a few examples of change within the community that will make a difference. First, he cited the importance of AB 392, a bill that was inspired after the Sacramento killing of Stephon Clark by a policeman. The bill was signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom and changes police use of force policies and requires officers to attempt de-escalation prior to using lethal force. Harris said this was a topic of conversation among activists in Minneapolis involving changes that can be made in policing. Harris said the main message from the Floyd family is peace and policy, and he said there’s room for policy change with the San Diego Sheriffs Department. He’s calling on the county to follow in the steps of the San Diego Police Department and ban the use of carotid restraint. Sheriff Bill Gore told 10News he does not plan to get rid of the method."I want to give me deputies as many less lethal options as I possibly can. And I'm reluctant to take an option like that away because when it's applied properly, it's probably one of the most effective tools we can use out there," Sheriff Gore said. "The alternative would be a use of force impact weapon, like a club, tasers — which carry with their own danger with them ... I think it's frequently confused when you see incidents like in Minneapolis." (KGTV) - A fraternity at San Diego State has been placed under interim suspension after a freshman membered was injured.The mother of the student told 10News he suffered a concussion, as well as a fractured wrist, sprained ankle, and bruises on his back.It’s unclear exactly when or how the injuries occurred, but the student’s mom said he had been at an event at the Kappa Alpha fraternity house on Wednesday, October 17. San Diego (KGTV)- As Westin Hotel workers fight for better wages, local business owners are fighting to keep business.Hotel workers have been on strike for the past few weeks. Business owners say customers are now avoiding the area and its costing them money.Joey Aiello owns a shoe shine stand that sits outside of The Westin Hotel. He says he’s seen fewer customers this month because of the strike. “People don’t think its a big business but it supports my family,” says Aiello.He says since the workers hit the picket line, he’s lost 00 in business. “The first week they were here I made less than 0 a day. We have to make 0 a day to stay a float.” Other business also say they are concerned about the noise.The San Diego Police Department says they have received six complaints since October 9th. A spokesperson with Marriott International sent us this statement that says in part:“We are disappointed with some of the tactics the union has deployed including the noise levels. We continue to work with local police to address these issues and we are grateful to our guests for their patience during this time.”The Unite Here Union President, Bridgette Browning, says employees are now in negotiations with the hotel. She also sent us a statement that says:“While we are sympathetic to neighboring businesses - we believe the Marriott has the power to fix this strike and the businesses should be demanding that Marriott do the right thing. The workers are not to blame for the low standards that Marriott has created at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp. Sunday is also the kick-off of National Fire Prevention Week.Cher Smith's home in Crest has a 360-degree view of nature. It's beautiful to look at, but dangerous during fire season. "Somebody is throwing a cigarette out, sparks from a car, whatever," Smith said. "There's always that fear that something is all of a sudden going to cause a fire to get out of control."In the last month, she and her son-in-law spent hours clearing up the dead brush on her 2.5 acre property. "We just barely made a dent on what needed to be done," Smith said. Smith said she couldn't afford to pay a landscaper to finish the job, but that all changed when she looked out her window earlier this week. "They are all up there like ants on the mountain bringing down the brush," Smith said. She saw CALFIRE and inmate fire crews working earnestly, with shovels in hand, to create a safe, defensible space. The space won't just create a defensible space for Smith's home, but for the entire Crest community. "I said, 'You have no idea how jazzed I am that you guys are doing this for us!'" Smith said enthusiastically. That's because just last month, she watched the Dehesa fire, creeping up toward her home. Also, back in 2003, her son-in-law lost his childhood home to a wildfire."A lot of people in Crest had their homes burned, so I think people are on high alert and sensitive to the dangers," Smith said. That's why to kick off National Fire Prevention Week, she wants to thank the fire service for their hard work. She also wants to remind her East County neighbors to be prepared. SAN DIEGO -- A woman is on high alert after she says a six-foot-long rattlesnake nearly attacked her dog Friday.Willow, 20, says she let her small dog out just before 10 a.m. Friday in San Diego.According to the 20-year-old, the dog started running around when Willow noticed a snake. She quickly grabbed the dog and started running back inside.Firefighters responded and found the massive red diamond rattlesnake cozying up net to some rocks near a fence line.A firefighter was able to safely remove the snake with tongs. Crews say this rattlesnake is the largest they’ve ever seen.After being fed and taken care of by a 3rd party, the snake will be released into the wild. 697
