To All Members of the U-M Ann Arbor Community:The University of Michigan has received and acted on allegations of sexual misconduct against Martin A. Philbert, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. With the endorsement and full support of the U-M Board of Regents, I have placed Dr. Philbert on administrative leave, effective Jan. 21, 2020, pending the results of an investigation we began on Friday, Jan. 17.I will follow up in the coming days regarding the appointment of an acting provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.We take allegations of sexual misconduct very seriously, and our policy is clear: Sexual misconduct will not be tolerated in the University of Michigan community.I want to apprise everyone of what has happened over the last few days and the actions we have taken. On Thursday and Friday, Jan. 16-17, 2020, the university received several allegations of sexual misconduct by Dr. Philbert. We began an internal investigation Friday. Over the next three days, the university retained an outside law firm which immediately launched an investigation of the allegations, our Division of Public Safety and Security was engaged, and Dr. Philbert was directed not to report to work. I placed him on administrative leave Tuesday.The Office for Institutional Equity, who would normally handle such investigations, reports to the provost. Today, I have moved OIE’s reporting line for all matters related to this investigation to Associate Vice President for Human Resources Richard S. Holcomb.The U-M Board of Regents and I are committed to a full and thorough investigation, and we will continue to work to ensure the integrity of the process, following the same policy and practices that apply to all employees at U-M. It remains early in the investigation, and no findings or conclusions have been reached.We thank the individuals who have come forward with these allegations. We know that reporting requires courage. It hasn't been washed and B. It's probably trapping a lot of bacterial or virus material you probably don't want on the mask," Christman said.Christman knows a thing or two about face masks and the protection they provide. At the start of the pandemic, he was in New York City helping treat COVID-19 patients."What gets on it? What is it besides our own sweat or maybe our own saliva?" Consumer Investigator Kristin Byrne asked Christman."What they are finding is on a lot of the exterior part of the mask, on the outside part of the mask, anything that you are ventilating through that is kind of stuck and contained on that mask. He said people need to be conscious of what part of the mask they touch."You want to be careful as you remove the mask in case you did come into contact with someone that is COVID positive that you don't touch the exterior of the mask and then touch your nose and mouth before washing your hands," he explained.So, Christman explained you should only touch the ear loops or mask ties when you remove it from your face for cleaning.And another tip -- if you wash your mask in your washing machine, you can use one of these mesh bags to prevent your mask from getting tangled with other pieces of laundry. Three people are currently battling for custody of the remains of infamous cult leader Charles Manson, who died in Bakersfield, California late last year.Jason Freeman, who claims to be Manson's grandson; Michael Brunner, who claims to be Manson's son and oldest living relative;, and Michael Channels, who was Manson's penpal for 30 years have all made claims to Masons's remains.Manson was hospitalized at Mercy Hospital Downtown last November before he eventually died. His body has been in the possession of Kern County since. In January, it was decided the fate of his remains would be decided through Kern County Superior Court. At the last hearing on Jan. 31, both Manson's son's and grandson's attorneys hinted at possibly joining forces. There have been multiple court hearings over who can lay claim to Manson's body and another to determine who will end up with his estate. Three UCLA basketball players -- including LiAngelo Ball, brother of Lakers guard Lonzo Ball and son of Big Baller Brand founder LaVar Ball -- could be facing significant prison time if convicted of shoplifting in China, according to a report Tuesday.The trio has been released on bail, Sports Illustrated reported. On Tuesday, ESPN reported Ball and fellow UCLA freshmen Cody Riley and Jalen Hill were arrested in UCLA on charges of shoplifting. UCLA is in China to play its season-opening game against Georgia Tech in Shanghai on Friday."The players are being questioned about stealing from a Louis Vuitton store that is located next to the team's hotel in Hangzhou, where the Bruins had been staying before moving on to Shanghai on Wednesday," ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported.Yahoo Sports contacted a lawyer familiar with the Chinese legal system who said each player could face 3 to 10 years in prison if convicted of shoplifting.Another individual familiar with Chinese law told Yahoo Sports that "Chinese prosecutors enjoy a 99.2 percent conviction rate."Ball, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, followed in his brother Lonzo's footsteps by committing to play college basketball at UCLA. There are new concerns about people's ability to understand information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.Dartmouth College researchers found many health agencies are publishing coronavirus information at a 10th grade reading level.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the American Medical Association and National Institutes of Health say information should not be published at more than an 8th grade reading level.Researchers say it could lead to more people missing information.“If high quality information, in terms of content, like with the CDC, WHO and other official organizations put out, if that is difficult to access, difficult to understand, then that does create a potential or an incentive for looking at less trustworthy sources,” said Joseph Dexter, Neukom Fellow at Dartmouth College.Researchers say health agencies need to use short and direct sentences when writing health information. They should also use short paragraphs, avoiding jargon and technical terms.It's also important to think about how information can be presented visually on a screen.Right now, it's not required that states follow these guidelines, but it is highly recommended. 1192
