New restaurants and hundreds of much-needed apartments could be coming to Poway's main road. But that proposal could also spell the end for Poway Fun Bowl, a longtime hangout for friends and local families. Fairfield Housing is proposing to buy the Alley's land and the Carriage Center strip mall next door - to build 216 apartments, 13,000 square-feet of commercial space, and a public plaza. The Poway City Council is holding an information session on Tuesday, and will give the developer feedback on the idea.Both the alley's owner and the mall management stressed that this is nothing close to a done deal, and that both have no immediate plans to close."Although people have expressed an interest in redeveloping the site, the owner is not currently under contract to sell the property," said Bobby Israel, the mall's property manager. Fairfield Housing didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.Casey Nezhoda, who owns Bargain Hunter's Thrift Shop in the mall, said there's been confusion among many of the mom-and-pop owners about what's next."Because it’s been kind of like a guessing game, of well, what’s going to happen with our shopping center?" she said, noting moving 7,000 square feet of merchandise would be a lot of work.But Andrew Weiss, who was shopping in the mall, said the project sounds like a good opportunity."This mall's a little bit old, so redevelopment would be nice, plus Poway's a great place to be," he said. NEW YORK CITY — Fire marshals arrested a 36-year-old man accused of setting off fireworks that burned down a Brooklyn home last month, officials said Thursday.Officials said that the video shows Damien Bend igniting the illegal fireworks on June 24. Bend is charged with arson, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said."Illegal fireworks pose significant dangers to the safety of New Yorkers and their property," Nigro said. "Our Fire Marshals will continue to actively enforce the laws relating to illegal possession and sales of fireworks in New York City."Bend allegedly set off numerous fireworks, sending one of them through a window at around 9:25 p.m. last Friday night. Officials say he continued to light them, even as flames could be seen through the window of the 51st Street home.Video shows that one of the people with Bend appeared to be smoking a cigarette and filming himself as he shot off the fireworks.His friend, also filming himself, eventually noticed the house was burning at 9:32 p.m. — about seven minutes after the fire started.The video showed one of the men trying to contain the fire with a garden hose, to no avail."They were doing it in such a confined area it was just bound to happen," said FDNY Captain Michael Koco, director of safety education. "It was a recipe for disaster."The FDNY has set up one of a number of informational booths across the city to inform residents of the dangers of setting off fireworks, given the dramatic spike in complaints."A lot of times, the people that are being harmed are the bystanders," Koco said.In the last nine days, fire marshals in New York have arrested 17 people and confiscated nearly ,000 worth of illegal fireworks.It took 60 firefighters to knock down the blaze started by fireworks at 51st Street."They're illegal for a reason," Koco said. News can happen at any time and any place, ujst ask Anna Boyko-Weyrauch.  The reporter from KUOW Public Radio had just locked her tray table into place when the pilot of the plane that was about to fly her to San Diego announced a delay."He says there’s a guy, and he’s got a plane and he’s flying around Seattle and so he’s tying up all the airways" said Boiko-Weyrauch. Her plane was among the 40 or so stranded for more than an hour while a rogue airport employee flew a Horizon Airways plane in the skies above Seattle.Boiko-Weyrauch immediately fired up her cell phone and began tweeting.  "I kick into news mode," she recalled.  "I hear these things from the pilot. I'm trying to confirm them."She used Twitter and e-mail to try to learn more about the situation. The pilot came back on the plane's intercom, telling passengers the man delaying their flight learned how to fly on the internet.  Somehow he managed not only to take off, but to fly past Mt. Rainier and the Olympic Mountains.She tweeted: Hey @AlaskaAir, can you confirm any of the reports we’re hearing and reading? A stolen Q-400? A suicidal pilot? F-15 escorts? A crash? Anything? About an hour and 15 minutes after the delay began, Boiko-Weyrauch read a tweet that said the plane had crashed and smoke was seen.  Moments later, her pilot told passengers the delay was over.She set her phone to flight mode and waited three hours until the flight landed in San Diego to confirm the man who stole the plane crashed it and died.Boiko-Weyrauch laughed as she admitted she almost left her work cell phone behind, thinking she wouldn't need it during a weekend visit with her 93-year-old grandmother.  The reporter in her decided to keep the phone handy, just in case. 1829
