SAN FRANCISCO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Google's Android will become the most popular smartphone operating system worldwide and will account for 49 percent of the market by 2012, IT research and advisory firm Gartner said Thursday.According to Gartner's projections, worldwide smartphone sales will reach 468 million units in 2011, a 57.7 percent increase from 2010.The company predicts that Apple's iOS will remain the second biggest platform worldwide through 2014 although its share will decrease slightly after 2011, on the assumption that "Apple will be interested in maintaining margins rather than pursuing market share by changing its pricing strategy."Microsoft's Windows, driven by its partnership with Nokia, is expected to move into the mid-tier by the end of 2012 and become the third largest in the worldwide ranking by 2013.Some analysts raised doubts on Gartner's forecasts, saying that its assumption on Apple's price strategy contradicts statements by Apple's chief operating officer Tim Cook and the cooperation between Nokia and Microsoft will not have that much of an impact on smartphone market share by 2012.

That's an average of 11 dog attacks every delivery day, and that figure does not include the number of threatening incidents that did not result in injury.Los Angeles is the third most dangerous city in the U.S. when it comes to being a mail carrier with 44 mail carriers being attacked by dogs in 2010, according to the U.S. Post Office.San Diego in California and Columbus in Ohio tied for second place, each logging 45 dog attacks. WASHINGTON, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Two U.S. astronauts conducted the third of four scheduled spacewalks for space shuttle Endeavour 's STS-134 mission on Wednesday morning, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced.Endeavour's mission specialists Drew Feustel and Mike Fincke completed a six-hour-54-minute spacewalk at 8:37 a.m. EDT (1437 GMT). They completed all planned tasks, installing cables to increase redundancy for the power system on the Russian segment of the station, completing the external wireless antenna system work Feustel and Greg Chamitoff began during the first spacewalk, and installing a power and data grapple fixture to Zarya. The fixture will allow the station's robotic arm to "walk" to the Russian segment, extending its reach by using that grapple fixture as a base.It was the 247th spacewalk conducted by U.S. astronauts, and the 158th in support of space station assembly and maintenance, totaling 995 hours and 13 minutes. LOS ANGELES, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Sugarcane has the effect of cooling temperatures, thus playing role in stemming global warming, a new study has found.Sugarcane does so by reflecting sunlight back into space and by lowering the temperature of the surrounding air as the plants " exhale" cooler water, according to the study conducted by researchers at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology.The researchers used data from hundreds of satellite images over 733,000 square miles (about 1,173 square kilometers) in Brazil, where sugarcane is widely grown. They measured temperature, reflectivity (also called albedo), and evapotranspiration -- the water loss from the soil and from plants as they exhale water vapor.The findings showed that expansion of sugarcane in areas previously occupied by other Brazilian crops cools the local climate.Converting from natural vegetation to crop/pasture on average warmed the cerrado by 2.79 Fahrenheit (1.55 Centigrade, but that subsequent conversion to sugarcane, on average, cooled the surrounding air by 1.67 Fahrenheit (0.93 Centigrade), the researchers said in the study published in the April issue of Nature Climate Change."We found that shifting from natural vegetation to crops or pasture results in local warming because the plants give off less beneficial water. But the bamboo-like sugarcane is more reflective and gives off more water -- much like the natural vegetation," said lead researcher Scott Loarie. "It's a potential win-win for the climate -- using sugarcane to power vehicles reduces carbon emissions, while growing it lowers the local air temperature."Brazilians are world leaders in using biofuels for gasoline. About a quarter of their automobile fuel consumption comes from sugarcane, which significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions that otherwise would be emitted from using gasoline.The researchers emphasized that the beneficial effects are contingent on the fact sugarcane is grown on areas previously occupied by crops or pastureland, and not in areas converted from natural vegetation. It is also important that other crops and pastureland do not move to natural vegetation areas, which would contribute to deforestation.So far most of the thinking about ecosystem effects on climate considers only impacts from greenhouse gas emissions. But according to co-researcher Greg Asner, "It's becoming increasingly clear that direct climate effects on local climate from land-use decisions constitute significant impacts that need to be considered core elements of human-caused climate change."

SHANGHAI, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai and several other Chinese cities have moved to restrict home purchases in a bid to deflate bubbles in the real estate market.The rules, which were revealed by Shanghai's Housing Guarantee and Administration Bureau on Saturday, prohibits new home purchases from locally-registered families who have owned two or more homes and non-local registered families who have owned at least one home.Additionally, non-Shanghai registered families who have no documents certifying they have paid for social security or income tax in the city for one year are banned from buying property.Sales of commercial homes fell 42.4 percent year on year in Shanghai in 2010 as earlier measures to curb the speculative demand in the real estate market took effect.Despite the fall in sales volume, the average price of new commercial homes rose by 7.6 percent to 20,995 yuan (3,200 U.S. dollars) per square meter last year.On the same day, authorities in the eastern city of Nanjing and the northeastern city of Harbin rolled out similar purchase restrictions.On Wednesday, the Beijing municipal government unveiled even tougher measures to prohibit home purchases from non-local registered families who have no proof of social security or income tax payments in the Chinese capital for five straight years.The purchase limits came after the State Council, China's Cabinet, ordered late last month that cities where home prices are skyrocketing must implement strict measures to restrict home purchases over a period of time.The State Council also said that local governments will be responsible for the stable and healthy growth of property markets and are required to publicize, before the end of March, the annual "controlled" price targets for new homes.China has implemented a series of measures since last year, which includes higher down payment and lending rates, and bans on mortgage loans for third homes, to rein in the rapid rise in housing prices.Soaring prices have become a major concern for urban Chinese residents as more homes turn unaffordable. In fact, home prices in some major cities such as Beijing have more than doubled over the past two years.
