NORMAL HEIGHTS (KGTV) - A dog died in an apartment fire in Normal Heights on Sunday afternoon.The fire started around 4:12 p.m. at 3546 Monroe Avenue. Officials say the owner had multiple dogs living in the unit, but only one was killed. No other injuries were reported.The fire was extinguished in less than 10 minutes. It started as a couch fire, caused by a faulty extension cord, officials said. 408

Nearly two dozen schools in metro Detroit were closed on Thursday due to threats. Detroit Police Chief James Craig said since the Florida school shooting on Feb. 14, DPD received a total of 40 threats, consisting of two bombing threats, 34 shooting threats, and two bombing and shooting threats.At one of the targeted schools, John R. King Academy, class was already in session when the bomb squad arrived at the school on the report of a suspicious package. The kids were dismissed for the day after it was found to be safe.Anyone arrested could potentially face charges of terrorism and making threats online. If convicted, those charges carry a 20-year penalty.Craig said in the last 24 hours, DPD has received 23 threats. Three juveniles and one adult have already been arrested for numerous threats. Craig says more people will be in custody soon."It's going to end," he said. The most recent came this week in the Mendocino Complex.The fact that all this devastation has come before the "official" start of fire season means this year could be record-setting.Typically, wildfires are most prominent in California in the late summer and fall. That's when Santa Ana winds can fan flames and send heat waves throughout the state. NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — President Donald Trump thanked an Indiana teacher for helping thwart a school shooting on Friday at Noblesville West Middle School outside of Indianapolis."Thanks to very brave Teacher & Hero Jason Seaman of Noblesville, Indiana, for his heroic act in saving so many precious young lives. Trump tweeted.Seaman is a science teacher at the school, and multiple students on the scene say Seaman was the teacher who helped stop the shooter.His mother, Kristi, says her son was shot in the abdomen, the hip and the forearm, according to her Facebook page. She says Jason is out of surgery and is "doing well."According to his LinkedIn page, Seaman has been a science teacher at Noblesville schools since July 2014. He is also the head football coach for the seventh-grade team.A student who was in the classroom at the time of the incident credited the teacher with stopping the shooting from being worse than it was.Southern Illinois University football also tweeted about Seaman. No charges will be filed against two Baton Rouge police officers in the 2016 shooting death of Alton Sterling after an investigation determined the officers' actions were "well-founded and reasonable," Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said Tuesday."This decision was not taken lightly. We came to this conclusion after countless hours of reviewing the evidence," Landry said.Landry's announcement in Baton Rouge -- coming 10 months after federal prosecutors determined they wouldn't file civil rights charges against the officers -- was made moments after he met Tuesday morning with Sterling's relatives to tell them of his decision.Outrage over Sterling's death led to renewed "Black Lives Matter" protests across the nation.Sterling, 37, was shot and killed by one of two police officers who confronted him outside a convenience store in July 2016. Cell phone video showed Sterling, a black man, pinned to the ground by the white Baton Rouge police officers before he was shot; police said Sterling was shot because he was reaching for a gun.The officers were responding to a call about a man with a gun. The call was from a homeless man who said that after he approached Sterling for money, Sterling showed him the weapon.In May 2017, federal prosecutors found there wasn't enough evidence to warrant civil rights charges against Officers Blane Salamoni, who shot Sterling, and Howie Lake II.The feds determined the officers' actions were reasonable under the circumstances -- including that the two used several less-than-lethal techniques before using force; that Sterling struggled with the officers and failed to follow orders; and that video evidence couldn't prove or disprove Salamoni's assertion that Sterling was reaching for a gun.Despite the federal findings, Sterling's five children filed a wrongful death lawsuit last summer, alleging their father's shooting violated his civil rights and fits a pattern of excessive force and racism within the Baton Rouge Police Department.Abdullah Muflahi, the owner of the Triple S Food Mart in Baton Rouge where Sterling was shot, also sued Baton Rouge and its police department.
