INDIANAPOLIS -- An Allegiant Airlines flight from Indianapolis to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was forced to make an emergency landing Sunday evening after a “noxious smell” was detected in the cabin.Allegiant Flight 1878 took off from the Indianapolis International Airport at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. It was scheduled to land at Myrtle Beach International Airport at 4:27 p.m.Mid-flight, however, flight attendants came on the intercom and informed passengers that the plane was going to make an emergency landing at the nearest airport due to a “noxious smell” in the cabin.The plane landed at Asheville Regional Airport, where passengers were asked to deplane. A passenger aboard the flight told Scripps station WRTV in Indianapolis that as she did so she could smell a “burning, smoky smell” near the cabin.In a statement to WRTV, Allegiant said the flight was diverted to Asheville "out of an abundance of caution to check out an electrical odor. The cause of the odor was not yet known.As of 9 p.m., passengers said they had been informed there would be an additional 25-30 minute delay as a problem had been detected in an air conditioning valve in the plane sent to pick them up.  1206

INDIANAPOLIS — Veteran's Affairs in Indianapolis says multiple graves at a Confederate burial site were smeared with tar and feathers earlier this month.The VA is seeking information that could lead to the identification of those responsible for smearing tar and feathers on graves in the "Confederate Mound" section of Crown Hill Cemetery."Vandalism and defacement of federal property is a serious crime, and VA is working with law enforcement officials to identify those responsible," the department said in a statement. "VA is committed to maintaining our cemeteries as national shrines, and that includes cleaning these gravesites, which memorialize those interred at the cemetery."The vandalism was discovered on June 6. Crown Hill Cemetery groundskeeper David Deems said he believes the graves were defaced that morning because the tar was still soft when he found it.Deems said he was able to clean most of the substance off the graves, but some remnants remain.The Confederate Mound is a federally-owned national cemetery that does not belong to Crown Hill Cemetery, though it is on its property. INDIANAPOLIS — Two Indiana veterans are raising concerns publicly about the Military Family Relief Fund, a fund that helps veterans get emergency help with food, housing, utilities, medical services and transportation.When you purchase a veteran license plate or a Support the Troops plate, a chunk of that money goes into the Military Family Relief Fund.The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs administers the fund, and it says on their website that veterans and their families can get up to ,500.“Grants up to ,500 may be awarded,” reads the website. “The qualified individual or family member can receive up to ,500 one time from the Family Relief Fund.” Lisa Wilken, an Air Force veteran and veterans advocate, told WRTV someone contacted her with state records that show some people are getting beyond the ,500 limit.“I was very shocked,” said Wilken. “The big deal is ... the rules are the rules.  Anytime it’s beyond that limit, that’s a misuse of that fund.”The records shared with WRTV show several of the people who received more than the ,500 include employees of the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs and the Military Family Relief Fund itself.“Employees at IDVA have been able to get this fund above ,500 where veterans around the state have been denied that opportunity,” said Wilken.Since 2016, IDVA has denied 799 applications to the Military Family Relief Fund.During that time frame, 3,971 applications have been approved.William Henry, an Army veteran and former adjutant of the American Legion, is also concerned about the inconsistency of how the fund is distributed to veterans in need."Those documents show potential misuse with the Military Family Relief Fund," said Henry. “To me, it looked very suspicious and called a lot of things into question and I thought immediately it needed to be looked into.”Henry said the American Legion asked him to resign when he pushed for the Indiana Inspector General to investigate IDVA and the Military Family Relief Fund."That's what it comes down to, doing the right thing,” said Henry. “Even though I lose a job. I'll find another job. The deal provides a one-time stimulus check, extends the eviction mortarium another month, and adds an additional 0 supplemental to extended unemployment benefits.In total, it’s a 0 billion plan that now protects roughly 40 million Americans from potentially being evicted from their homes and prevents 12 million Americans from losing out on unemployment benefits.“It is a success and a win because that won’t happen,” said Stephanie Freed, “Beyond that, it’s not much of a win.”Stephanie Freed is among millions of Americans who are unemployed and have already expired out of unemployment benefits. Under the new deal, she will be able to now apply for unemployment again and will be eligible for the additional 0 weekly supplemental. However, even with reinstated and slightly higher benefits, it will still be a struggle to get by.“The 0 is half of what people needed to survive, and the bigger problem is that it is not retroactive,” said Freed. “There has been five months with no additional benefit, state UI is not a livable wage.”Freed has created an online organization called ExtendPUA in order to help others who are also struggling with unemployment during the pandemic. There are members of Extend PUA that have been getting as little as a week in unemployment benefits since the 0 federal supplemental dropped off in July.Grant McDonald is the co-founder of Extend PUA and knows firsthand that state unemployment benefits alone are not enough to survive. Like many, he has had to drain his savings and take on significant debt to just keep him barely afloat.“Personally, I have not kept up with the number because I have just been trying to keep up with it all,” said McDonald. “I am just trying to pay as much as I can and watch my savings slowly disappear.”In the latest stimulus package, Congress did agree on a 0 stimulus check that some say could help with debt accumulated.“I think 0 is what rich people think poor people think is a lot of money, when in reality, that additional 0 plus the 0, one-time, is not going to help anyone pay any of the accumulated debts,” McDonald added.For Freed, McDonald, and the thousands of unemployed people who have reached out to Extend PUA, the new stimulus deal is something, but nothing close to what they’ve been waiting nearly nine months for.“We understand there are some wins here but mostly it means that we have to keep fighting,” said Freed.The Biden administration has called this latest package a “down payment” to the American people, signaling an expectation for yet another more robust stimulus deal.
