RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) — Two people were killed and a third person was seriously hurt in a head-on collision in Ramona on Wednesday.CHP said at about 12:15 p.m., a 56-year-old woman was driving a 2016 Ford Focus northbound on Mussey Grade Road, south of Mahogany Ranch Rd., at a high rate of speed. At the same time, an unidentified woman was driving a 2017 Subaru Impreza southbound on the same road. For reasons that are unclear, CHP said the driver of the Focus lost control of her vehicle and veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with the Impreza. The driver of the Focus and a male passenger in the Impreza died at the scene, CHP said. The driver of the Subaru was taken to Palomar Medical Center with major injuries.CHP says they believe both occupants in the Subaru were wearing a seat belt, but the driver of the Ford was not at the time of the crash. It's unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash. 943

Presidential candidate Joe Biden’s campaign released a statement on Monday saying that the former vice president is not in favor of defunding police departments. His campaign’s statement comes a day after the Minneapolis City Council voted on dismantling the city’s police department in the wake of the death of George Floyd.Biden’s campaign added that he is supportive of police reforms, many of which are backed by those leading massive protests throughout the country.“Vice President Biden does not believe that police should be defunded,” Biden campaign spokesperson Andrew Bats said. “He hears and shares the deep grief and frustration of those calling out for change, and is driven to ensure that justice is done and that we put a stop to this terrible pain.”Biden’s campaign says it is supportive of increasing funding for public schools, summer programs and mental health and substance abuse treatment, “so that officers can focus on the job of policing.”Meanwhile, President Donald Trump tweeted on Monday that “the radical left Democrats have gone crazy” in response to defunding the police.“The president is appalled by the defund the police movement,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said.Earlier on Monday, Democrats in Congress proposed legislation calls on a national ban on police use of chokeholds, mandates racial bias training for officers, and sets restrictions on transferring military-type vehicles from the federal government to local police departments.Last week at a speech in Philadelphia, Biden said that he would call on Congress to implement a ban on chokeholds and a stop of transferring military equipment to police departments.McEnany said that the president does not have a specific police reform plan in response, but said it’s something he will look into. 1810

President Trump spoke to reporters Wednesday following Tuesday's Midterm Elections.Trump's began with prepared remarks speaking about Republicans wins in the Senate, calling his party's performance "historic."President Trump also made a point to call out Republicans who did not embrace his agenda and lost races, including Rep. Mia Love (R-Utah) who is currently losing to Democrat Ben McAdams."Mia Love gave me no love. And she lost. Sorry, Mia," Trump said.President Trump also indicated he may make a change in his cabinet regarding Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke. Zinke has been plagued by a number of scandals since he took office."We'll take a look," Trump said.Trump was later asked if his Chief of Staff, Gen. John Kelly, would be leaving the administration."People leave," Trump said, while later indicating he hadn't heard of reports that Kelly would be leaving. Trump later claimed people were "lining up" to work in the White House.Trump's presser follows a mixed midterm election, which saw his Republican party pick up additional seats in the Senate, but lose control of the House of Representatives.Though Trump often speaks to pool reporters on the White House lawn and on the oval office, Wednesday's presser was just his third press conference since he took office in January 2017. His last presser took place in September as the Senate Judiciary Committee prepared to interview his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, in the wake of sexual abuse allegations.Trump's first press conference came just weeks after his inauguration in February of 2017.Watch the press conference in the player above.    1672

Researchers at University of Michigan have developed a fake news detector to help fight against misinformation. The technology is "an algorithm-based system that identifies telltale linguistic cues in fake news stories." The team says the system is "comparable to and sometimes better than humans at correctly identifying fake news stories."According to their study, linguistic analysis tracks things like grammatical structure, word choice, punctuation and complexity. But there are challenges to making sure the system properly deciphers stories. Researchers say the difficulty in building a fake news detectors is not in developing the algorithm itself, "but in finding the right data with which to train that algorithm."The system is still in its beta stage. Details of the fake news detector system will be presented on August 24 at the International Conference on Computational Linguistics in Santa Fe. Read the full study here. 962

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Associated Press has declared President Donald Trump the winner in North Carolina, though Joe Biden is still projected to win the presidency. The AP concluded Friday that there were not enough outstanding ballots remaining to be counted in the state that would allow Joe Biden to overtake Trump’s lead of 73,697 votes.Friday was the deadline for counties in North Carolina to certify their results. Following updates from most counties in the state, Trump leads Biden by 1.3 percentage points.Trump campaigned aggressively in North Carolina with in-person rallies at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, including gatherings in Fayetteville, Winston-Salem and Greenville in the weeks before the election. He was scheduled to hold the Republican National Convention in the state but pulled out after a fight with the state’s Democratic governor over coronavirus restrictions. It was moved to Jacksonville, Florida, before being largely canceled all together.Trump’s win in the Tar Heel State puts the president at 232 electoral votes and Joe Biden remains at 290 votes.Biden is still projected to win the presidential election, since he has surpassed the 270-vote threshold needed to claim victory. The only state the AP has yet to call is Georgia, which is conducting a recount because neither Biden or Trump leads by more than .5 percentage points. Results show that Biden leads Trump in the Peach State by more than 14,100 votes. 1460
