CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A new music school is open in the South Bay, teaching kids to play instruments with a less-classical approach."We're not the little old lady down the street with a metronome," says owner Mark Sheffield. He opened the School of Rock at Otay Ranch Town Center after his wife had to drive through traffic to take their son to classes in Liberty Station."Later on that evening, I asked how did it go, did you have fun? Yes, it was a blast. He loved it. We want to do that again. But we're not. But we're not ever doing that again. It was a 45-minute drive there and an hour and a half drive back," Sheffield explains. He says opening a South Bay location gives kids in that part of the county an option to learn music in a fun, modern way."The students learn music by playing it in an environment that fosters a true enjoyment for what they're doing," he says. "They're going to want to come anyway, and hang out with friends, and they're going to end up learning."School of Rock offers lessons for kids starting at age 3, no matter the skill level. There are also classes for adults. The lessons use one-on-one instruction as well as group jam sessions. They're holding a grand opening on Saturday, February 22nd. 1244

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A Tijuana police officer who allegedly took part in a plot to steal more than million from a Chula Vista home, which he and other defendants believed was a stash house containing drug money, was ordered Monday to stand trial on two conspiracy charges.Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, is accused of planning with five other men to rob the home in late January, after an undercover FBI agent told them a shipment of money would be delivered to the residence, according to testimony at the defendant's preliminary hearing.A fellow officer, Marco Quijas-Castillo, 27, pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy to commit robbery and faces two years in state prison. Four others are also facing various charges in connection with the attempted theft.RELATED: 2 Tijuana police officers among group charged in Chula Vista home burglaryTestimony at Torres' preliminary hearing indicated the defendants were told two unarmed individuals would be inside the three-bedroom home, which was actually being rented by the FBI for the operation. The criminal complaint alleges Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 33, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 29, who traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres allegedly "provided counter-surveillance" at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance at the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and "entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house," the complaint alleges. The men had allegedly planned to tie up the two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home, according to testimony. The defendants are due back in court June 30 for a readiness conference. 2022

CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista family is getting creative this year, making a special “candy monster tree” to help people socially distance while also having a good time on Halloween.Homeowners Chris and Marty Morrow say they turned a large magnolia tree in their front yard into a fun Halloween activity, hanging so-called “candy monsters” from black ribbons.“We passed out Golden Tickets to neighbors to bring their children for socially distant Halloween fun,” Marty Morrow said.RELATED: City of San Diego sets up 'grab-and-go' candy sites for HalloweenAt sunset, kids will be allowed to pick candy from the tree one at a time.“It’s about having fun and giving some normalcy to the local kids in Chula Vista.”, said Chris Morrow. “We have lived in our home for 8 years and are happy to give smiles this year.”The homeowners say they got the idea from Martha Stewart. The festivities take place in the area of Jefferson Avenue and Flower Street between 5:30 and 6:30 on October 31. 1002

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Things got heated Thursday at a protest in Chula Vista over a library's Drag Queen Story Time. Drag Queen Story Time, set to begin at the Otay Ranch Library September 10, inspired strong feelings on both sides of the aisle. Roughly two dozen residents against the event said they were concerned it would sexually influence children. "How dare anybody. We want to protect children. We want to protect our culture. That's not hate. that's love," said Arthur Schapper, a protester against the story time. "Adult entertainers as role models? What's next? Why not porn stars," he continued. As tensions mounted at Thursday’s protest, officers with the Chula Vista Police Department were forced twice to intervene. A speaker in opposition of the story time spoke at a podium as a crowd gathered, shouting “no justice, no peace.” As voices grew louder, a group of officers made their way through the crowd, separating the groups. "But they have not even stopped to talk to these performance, these people, these human beings who just happen to also be drag queens," said Kelly Hutton. Dennis Hodges, a pastor in Lemon Grove, came to the event to oppose Drag Queen Story Time, but said he regretted how tensions escalated. "I don't scream and holler at people. I don't expect them to scream and holler at me."The City of Chula Vista issued the following statement about the event: 1411
