SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A shopper at Westfield UTC mall got a disturbing surprise while going to the bathroom, in the form of a cell phone's camera lens.Around noon on Saturday, amid a busy holiday shopping day, Mike Gonzalez went to the bathroom. His wife and 5-year-old daughter were waiting for him in the nearby food court."The urinals were taken so I went into the stall," said Gonzalez. Gonzalez went inside the stall at the far end."I'm finishing up my business, and I see a cell phone pop out of the stall next to me and pop back like that," said Gonzalez.He says the phone slid against the back wall just enough for the camera lens to be visible."Wow, did that actually happen?" said Gonzalez. Gonzalez' confusion quickly gave way to action."I was angry and felt violated," said Gonzalez. He told another man to get mall security before turning his attention to the stall."When you looked at the stall, he had it blocked with paper towels. You couldn't see in, top to bottom. Kicked the door a little and told him to get out," said Gonzalez.Gonzalez says the man that emerged was in his early 20s, about 5'10", 175 lbs, with curly, light brown hair. Gonzalez told him what he saw and the man denied it all."I was pushing him back, holding him in place so he couldn't leave," said Gonzalez.The shoving moved into the hallway, before the man slipped away and raced off. Gonzalez says what makes his skin crawl the most is the paper towel setup, which may mean the man had been in there awhile, taking photos. "The scariest thing is probably what if there were kids in there. You can put photos and videos online. Who knows what he does with it," said Gonzalez.Gonzalez filed a report with San Diego Police. 10news reached out to Westfield, but a spokesperson declined to comment, citing an active police investigation. 1828

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A second lawsuit has been filed by family members of a mother and daughter killed by a YouTube star in a deadly wrong-way crash last year.18-year-old Trevor Heitmann, known as McSkillet on YouTube, drove his McLaren the wrong way on I-805 in August 2018. The crash killed Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana. This latest lawsuit was filed August 22nd by Angelo Pizarro and Arcelio Garcia. Pizarro is one of the sons of Aileen Pizarro. Garcia is the father of Aryana. A lawsuit earlier this summer was filed by Aileen Pizarro's other son, Dominic, and her father. The lawsuit claims wrongful death and negligence by the City of San Diego and the County of San Diego. The family is also suing Heitmann’s estate. It states that San Diego police received a “mental case” call that Heitmann was “screaming, paranoid and delusional and threatening to harm his mom.”Police were advised by a licensed psychiatrist that Heitmann needed to be “possibly placed on a 5150 mental hold,” according to court records. However, officers did not speak to or evaluate Heitmann to determine if he was a danger to himself or others. The lawsuit also states that “one or more of the Police Officers represented or implied that they were part of a San Diego County Psychiatric Emergency Team.”Team 10 reached out to both county and city officials. As of Wednesday afternoon, there was no comment regarding the lawsuit from the city. A county spokesperson said they have not seen the lawsuit yet. Cynthia Chihak, the attorney for Pizarro and Garcia, sent Team 10 a statement which reads in part:"I am privileged to represent Angelo Pizarro, the son of Aileen Pizarro, and Arcelio Garcia, the father and sole heir of twelve year old Aryana Pizarro, who were killed on August 23, 2018 when their car was struck head-on by a McLaren automobile driven by Trevor Heitmann... This family is not excusing Mr. Heitmann’ s reckless behavior, but believe this tragic loss of three lives could have been prevented if the City of San Diego has taken seriously earlier reports of his violent and dangerous behavior. The loss suffered by this young man Angelo, of his mother and sister and the loss to Mr. Garcia of his daughter can never be rectified. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After nearly two decades of delays and setbacks, San Ysidro community members celebrated the completion of a million major road reconstruction project Monday.For years the half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road in between San Ysidro High and San Ysidro Middle Schools lacked many safety features to protect the students who walk to and from school.An unfinished dirt path was used as a sidewalk with no fence to keep students away from oncoming vehicle traffic, no street lights or proper signage and no barriers to keep pedestrians from slipping down a steep canyon.After three years, the stretch of road now includes the safety features the community had been asking for for years. The roadway was widened and realigned, sidewalks and bike lanes were added, there's now a retaining wall, signage and lighting.The City of San Diego says the project took so long to complete after the initial groundbreaking because of the rough terrain crews had to work through.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced reforms to overhaul the City’s infrastructure program back in 2015. He says that increased funding each year and helped speed up high priority projects, like the one on Old Otay Mesa Road. This project was one of more than 60 neighborhood projects that were fully funded after Faulconer’s reforms went into effect."Parents have a peace of mind knowing that their kids have a safe path to and from school," said Faulconer at a news conference Monday.The half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road, which was closed off to traffic for several years, officially reopened on Monday. 1612

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An old airport terminal turned innovation lab hopes to ultimately improve the customer experience at San Diego International Airport (SAN).The second group of innovators has begun the 16-week accelerator program to "field test" and develop their concepts in a real-world airport environment.The Innovation Lab was launched to reduce barriers for innovators to break into the aviation industry. Its goals are to develop concepts that can enhance the passenger experience, improve operational efficiency, increase revenues and/or decrease costs. The 3,500-square-foot space offers a functional mini-terminal area with ticket counters and a bag claim carousel, all without passenger or security concerns to work around."We wanted to provide a location where we could invite innovators in to test their solutions," said Rebecca Bloomfield, spokesperson for SAN. Jon Wisner, Director of Business Development & Partnerships at HOHM Inc., says they've already gotten good feedback on a sleeping pod they hope to bring to airports. "What we are trying to validate is the best usage for the pod - whether it be used for a nap, lactation room, or privacy just in general, meditation, prayer," said Wisner. The pods are currently being tested by airport staff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A water line break forced Hard Rock Hotel guests out of their rooms Sunday night.San Diego Fire officials said that about 2 inches of water from the 7th floor leaked down to the 5th and 6th floors beginning around 10 p.m. at the hotel on 5th Avenue. The water was shut off shortly after 11 p.m.Some guests had to leave their rooms because of the flooding.
