The No. 29 Nationalists Corps fought hard to resist the siege, marking the official start of an eight-year resistance war.The Chinese resistance played a decisive role in inflicting heavy casualties on the Japanese. The Chinese people paid dearly for the victory, with an estimated 35 million casualties, including military and civilian, dead and wounded.The memorial has received more than 15 million visitors since it opened in 1987, said Li Zongyuan, deputy curator of the memorial hall.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's Supreme People's Court (SPC) has urged more efforts to clear the backlog of cases as a campaign to complete long-delayed verdicts had seen positive results.Various local departments were urged to be "fully aware" of the importance of the speedy execution of court orders and tackling the backlog of cases, said a statement released Tuesday after a meeting on backlogged cases.The meeting was jointly held by the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the SPC.Statistics cited in the statement show that since a campaign on clearing backlogged cases started in November 2008, long-delayed verdicts for more than 333,000 property cases had been completed.In addition, more than 3 million cases not involving properties had also been cleared.The two organizations urged police, banks, financial administrative departments, tax departments and other units that might be involved in case execution to fully support and coordinate the enforcement of court orders.The statement also called for harsher punishments and restrictions in real estate, credit rating and other fields for defendants who refused to follow court orders."The campaign is in accordance with the people's interests... and will have positive effects on promoting social harmony and stability," said Wang Lequan, deputy secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission, at the meeting.

All of 13 people on board were safely rescued.At around 12:04 noon (GMT 4:04), the Sky Shuttle type AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter, flight no. EMU2, made an emergency landing at sea about 500 meters northwest of Shun Tak Center at Sheung Wan, Hong Kong Island shortly after taking off."The pilot heard a loud bang at the back and decided to land on the waters," Acting Director General of the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) Leung Yu-keung said at a press briefing on Saturday that they will send some of the fittings broken down from the wreckage to Italy, where the copter was manufactured, for investigation. The crashed helicopter is salvaged on the sea area between the Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsular, south China, July 3, 2010. ISLAMABAD, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- All the Chinese trapped in the flood-hit Pakistan's northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been evacuated to safe places with the assistance of the Pakistani side, said Liu Jian, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan on Monday.According to Liu, a total of 265 Chinese workers and engineers working at a hydro power station project in the Patan area of Kohistan District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were trapped on a mountain after a huge landslide triggered by floods and torrential rains washed across their work site on July 29.Three Chinese engineers and workers went missing after they were reportedly washed away by the flood water and landslide while working inside a tunnel.The trapped Chinese who retreated up to a nearby mountain surrounded by the flood water suffered a great deal as they were in serious lack of food and water and had to fight the coldness of living in the open atop a mountain lashed by torrential rains.Upon hearing the news of the Chinese trapped in the flood-hit area of northwest Pakistan, the Chinese embassy immediately kicked off an emergency rescue operation under the assistance of the Pakistani government, army and police.Three military helicopters were dispatched to the site where the Chinese were trapped for the rescue work. Large numbers of troops and police forces were mobilized as well. The Chinese ambassador together with his embassy colleagues also rushed to the site from Islamabad on July 31 by fighting the difficulties on the disrupted roads leading to Patan.After nearly five days of cocerted efforts by the Chinese and Pakistani sides, all the Chinese trapped on the mountain in the Patan area had been evacuated to safe places as of late Monday afternoon, said Liu Jian, adding that the search operation for the three missing Chinese is still underway.However, the chance for the survial of the three missing Chinese is very slim, said Pakitani police officers who are involved in the search operation.
