VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Californians are getting ready for a new set of businesses to reopen after June 12, 2020. Last Friday, the state released specific COVID-19 guidelines for several industries, including gyms, bars, and hotels. Vista Fitness owner Brian Belasco is setting up cones in his parking lot to create social distancing spots for his patrons. He's doing this well in advance of the state's gym reopenings on June 12."Being able to reopen means the world to us," Belasco said. Last Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom released specific guidelines for the next group of industries allowed to reopen with modifications, no sooner than June 12, 2020. They include gyms, schools, film production, professional sports, bars and wineries, hotels, cardrooms, family entertainment, museums, and zoos. Since mid-March, Belasco said his trainers have been successfully teaching online workout classes. "We just finished a virtual challenge," Belasco said. "We had members losing up to 30 pounds in 28 days."But he said he is ready to see his members in person. "It's the camaraderie, especially times like right now, bringing people together that is our specialty," Belasco said. That is why he says he is implementing many of the State's new gym guidelines, which include:Limiting the number of members insideConducting temperature and health screenings upon entryStaggering lockers and machinesProviding disinfecting wipes or gel for hands and equipment No sharing water bottles or towelsWearing masksFor weeks, Belasco has been practicing these guidelines already with his coaches and volunteers. "They get called in one by one, temperature check, foot bath, hand sanitizer, and then they get pointed to their station, and they're all spread out in this room," Belasco said as he pointed at the mat in the middle of the gym. So when June 12 rolls around, Belasco said the new guidelines will seem like old news. "We've been ready. We've been researching. We have all of the supplies, and we are ready to go," Belasco said proudly. All businesses in this category will require the San Diego County Public Health Officer's approval before they can reopen. Voters in Mississippi voted to approve a new state flag design.Lawmakers took action this summer to retire the former Mississippi state flag, which contained the Confederate battle emblem.The rebel symbol is widely seen as racist.In the last two months, the process to design and vote on a new flag has moved fast.There was a call to artists to help design a new flag. By law, the new flag must include the phrase, “In God We Trust,” and could not include any depictions of the Confederate battle flag.The designs were narrowed to five based on a public online vote and feedback. VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- After a trip to visit their grandma in Ohio, eight year old Lilly and 12 year old Zachary were driving back to California with their mom and grandma when a wrong-way driver hit their car head-on in Oklahoma, killing all four of them. The wrong-way driver, identified by Oklahoma authorities as 33-year-old Ashley Louise Ricks, survived the crash.Monday, Oklahoma authorities gave an update, saying witnesses smelled alcohol at the scene of the crash. Witnesses and 911 calls also reveal the woman was driving at a high rate of speed and in the wrong direction for at least nine miles before the fatal crash occurred. Authorities said they’re currently investigating her medical history, driver history and taking blood samples before making any charges.The family was driving back to Vista, near San Diego, so Lilly could make it back home in time for school to resume. A GoFundMe created by a family friend shows the kids called their dad and stepmom every day while on vacation, telling them about the fun they’d had on their trip.Sam Homant, the kids’ dad, and their stepmom Melissa Starnes said the last time they talked to their son, it was the night of the crash.“He was excited to come home. We had just got him a brand new bed, a brand new bed that he was just so excited for, this pillow top mattress and he was so excited. And that was the last thing that we said to him,” said Starnes.They described the kids as family oriented and special. Zachary had a creative and kind heart.“He could take Legos and create anything out of Legos. He loved to build, just a smart smart little boy. Very creative. Wanted to be an architect. His imagination was off the rack,” they said.Lilly had similar passions to many little girls her age, but also loved to ride her dad’s motorcycle with him.“She loved makeup and dancing and her dolls. She loved to draw,” they said.The GoFundMe will help pay to bring the kids home. As they grieve, these parents want answers.“They had such a bright future and it’s been taken away by this lady and we don’t know why. (KGTV) -- The Vista Unified School District announced Tuesday that its secondary schools would be pivoting back to virtual learning until the end of winter break.The decision only applies to district middle and high schools; students will have to finish the next three weeks of instruction virtually.Vista's elementary schools will continue with in-person learning.According to the latest community update on the district's website, the reason for the pause in in-person learning is based on the recent increase in the spread of COVID-19 "globally, nationally, regionally and locally."It goes on to say, "While Vista Unified has seen no evidence of the virus spreading within the school environment after 26 days of instruction in the Vista Classic learning model, the impact of the virus within our community is causing staffing challenges for teachers, instructional assistants, custodians, and other employees."The school board has a meeting scheduled for Dec. 15 to revisit the situation and discuss possible adjustments for the second half of the school year. 1086
