But for the week, it still posted a fall of 3.65 percent.Light, sweet crude for September delivery fell moderately 12 cents, or 0.15 percent to settle at 82.26 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange after trading from 79.17 to 83.55 dollars.But in London, Brent crude for October delivery gained 1.63 dollars, or 1.52 percent to close at 108.62 dollars a barrel. For this week, it gained 59 cents, or 0.55 percent.

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Facebook and Yahoo on Monday started to test "six degrees of separation," an iconic social experiment in the 1960s that showed everyone is on average approximately six steps away from any other person on earth.The current Facebook-Yahoo "small world" experiment, based on more than 750 million active Facebook users, is expected to determine the social path length between two strangers.Anyone with a Facebook account can participate by going to smallworld.sandbox.yahoo.com and will be assigned a "target person. JIANGYIN, Jiangsu, July 1 (Xinhua) -- China's manned deep-diving submersible, the Jiaolong, embarked on a journey on Friday during which it will make a 5,000-meter dive in the Pacific Ocean.During the dive, the submersible will undergo several operational tests in which it will take photos, shoot video, survey seabeds and take samples from the ocean floor, according to Jin Jiancai, deputy director of the submersible's diving test program team.The tests will be conducted in the Pacific Ocean in accordance with a contract signed between the China Ocean Mineral Resources Research & Development Association and the International Seabed Authority (ISA).The submersible is scheduled to spend 47 days at sea, according to a statement from the Ministry of Science and Technology.A submersible differs from a submarine, as it typically depends on another vessel or facility for support.The Jiaolong, designed to reach a depth of 7,000 meters, completed 17 dives in the South China Sea between May 31 and July 18 last year, reaching 3,759 meters during its deepest dive.In the year since the submersible's last dive, program team members have made several technical improvements to the submersible and its support vessel, Jin said.Jin said the program team members are "very confident" about the test.He also stressed that the test will be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as well as the ISA's rules and regulations.The Jiaolong is the world's first manned submersible designed to reach depths of 7,000 meters below sea level, according to Xu Qinan, the submersible's chief designer.

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 3 (Xinhua)-- Google's top legal officer on Wednesday posted a scathing blog post, accusing Microsoft, Apple, Oracle and other companies of waging "bogus" patent wars over smartphone technologies.More than 550,000 Android devices are activated daily, but the success of the mobile operating system has yielded "a hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patent," said Google Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond."Microsoft and Apple have always been at each other's throats, so when they get into bed together you have to start wondering what's going on," wrote Drummond at the beginning of the blog post under the heading "When patents attack Android."The top legal officer lashed out the coalition that Apple and Microsoft formed to buy Novell patents and Nortel patents.Last month, Google was outbid by the 4.5 billion bid made by the winning consortium of companies that includes Apple, Microsoft, Research in Motion, Sony, Ericsson and EMC on Canadian company Nortel Network's patent portfolio.The Nortel portfolio, which is in all of the companies'best legal interests, includes patents on 3G and 4G wireless networking, optics, voice processing, semiconductors and more.Last December, an unnamed consortium of companies, organized by Microsoft and including Apple, EMC and Oracle, also outbid Google for nearly 900 patents of software company Novell.Patent litigation between technology companies have been flaring up particularly over mobile devices and technology.Last August, Oracle accused Google of infringing on patents related to Java, which the database giant acquired when it took ownership of Sun Microsystems in early 2010.Microsoft is suing device makers who use Android, including Barnes & Noble, Motorola and HTC.Drummond wrote that "We're also looking at other ways to reduce the anti-competitive threats against Android by strengthening our own patent portfolio. Unless we act, consumers could face rising costs for Android devices -- and fewer choices for their next phone."
