SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Amazon delivery driver was caught on video tossing a package onto a driveway like it was a newspaper, and the customer is not happy about it. “I order books. I’ve ordered Echos. I’ve ordered cameras on Amazon,” Del Cerro resident Yung Jun Kim said. He was worried someone might, one day, steal a package.“I ordered the ring camera to monitor the delivery,” Kim said “The first time the Amazon delivery happened on-camera, the driver drove into the driveway, didn’t even get out of his car, rolled down his window and threw my package onto the driveway."Kim found the package on the porch when he got home. What happened was also caught on video.“It was really great, because my mailman came by about 15 minutes later and he picked it up from the driveway and left it on my doorstep,” Kim said.Kim thinks the Amazon deliver driver threw his neighbor's package as well.“The video showed him pulling into her driveway for about 10 seconds and pulling back out. So, in that time, I don’t think he got out of a car and went into her courtyard and delivered it that way," Kim said. "He probably just threw it on the driveway."This time, Kim’s package was not fragile - but the driver didn't know that. Kim emailed Amazon and complained.“Customer service responded that same day, and they gave me a long apology and said they were going to look into it, which, I don’t know if they did," he said. "They also gave me a credit for my troubles."Kim says he hopes Amazon will get better drivers, because based on the video - they've got at least one with a negative attitude. "It takes very little effort to get out of the car to make a delivery onto a porch," Kim said. 10News reached out to Amazon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Escondido Union School District school is suspending on-campus operations for the rest of the month after three positive COVID-19 tests.Three people in the Pioneer School community tested positive for the virus in separate, unrelated instances off-campus. Due to this, and the high case rate in the surrounding area, the school district says it is temporarily suspending all on-campus activities at Pioneer School through Nov. 30.The suspension includes pausing the school's hybrid instruction model and extended care, and moving students to virtual learning. The school's distribution of free, to-go meals will continue."EUSD’s decision to suspend on-campus learning at Pioneer School was not directed by a public health department. County health officials have continued to express confidence in EUSD’s health and safety protocols. This decision was made to ensure the stability of the educational program offered to our students, as well as to continue our commitment to ensuring the health and safety of our students and employees," a district statement read.The school says the campus closure will affect 449 students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - All month long recreational vehicle owners staying at the Dreams for Change safe parking lot have been desperate to find a new place to stay. They were given 30-day notices to leave the site by the end of July. Dreams for Change leadership says it was always their intention to shift clients to the City's new safe parking lot, located near SDCCU stadium. However, the new safe parking lot has gone mostly unused. RV owners are required to move their vehicles during the day, which can be a barrier for some.CEO of Dreams for Change, Teresa Smith, says they've now come up with a temporary solution. RV owners will be allowed to leave their vehicles on the property, but they will have to go during the day.The nonprofit must balance serving their clients while also abiding by permitting and zoning rules. They are working to treat RVs the same way cars are treated in the program.Smith says the ultimate goal is to transition clients into permanent housing, who receive assistance from a caseworker. According to the Dreams for Change website, 2,650 people have been served through the program since 2009, and 65% of participants find housing or long-term transitional housing within three months of coming into contact with the nonprofit. 1268

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An infectious disease expert at San Diego State University says early research suggests the COVID-19 pandemic could cause a spike in another, more deadly respiratory disease: tuberculosis.An estimated one in four people on the planet is already infected with TB without knowing it. The bacterium that causes the disease can lie dormant for years, even decades, waiting for the right moment to strike.San Diego State University professor Dr. Faramarz Valafar says SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, could be just the right pathogen to trigger more TB cases to activate, both worldwide and in the U.S. And the symptoms of COVID-19 could help spread the TB bacteria more efficiently.“COVID-19 could act as a vehicle for transmission of tuberculosis,” he said. “This is a significant public health risk.”In the early 1900s, TB was the number one cause of death in the U.S. Today, it remains one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide with about 1.5 million deaths each year, although deaths in the U.S. are now rare. There were 515 deaths in the U.S. in 2017, the most recent data available.Although the tuberculosis is mostly curable and preventable with antibiotics, some strains have become drug-resistant.“I believe it's naive to think that because there is not much tuberculosis here in the United States, it’s going to remain that way,” said Valafar. “We now have a vehicle for the transmission of all sorts of tuberculosis strains from around the world to the United States.”The CDC estimates up to 13 million people in the U.S. have latent TB. Studies have shown the disease can activate when the immune system is weakened, including by HIV.“If COVID-19 comes in and keeps the immune system busy or overburdened, then my first worry is that tuberculosis in those people could activate,” he said.A small study out of China that has not yet been peer-reviewed suggests people with latent TB are at a higher risk of developing severe COVID symptoms. Other experts have raised concerns about the pandemic could exacerbate TB infections.Valafar said his second worry is that the symptoms of COVID-19 could help spread tuberculosis. Both pathogens take hold in the lungs and cause coughing.“If the person has tuberculosis, all it takes is for COVID-19 to make that person cough or sneeze and there will be a much higher risk of tuberculosis transmission,” he said.Valafar and his team are already studying the effects of TB and HIV in South Africa. They plan to soon expand their study to examine the effects of COVID-19 as well, with results expected in about a year.In the meantime, he’s sounding the alarm to urge people to heed public health warnings. Masks, hygiene and social distancing don’t just protect against COVID-19. They protect against TB as well.“It's so much more important that people really follow those instructions,” he said. 2881
