CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- First responders in Carlsbad are prepared for any emergency, thanks to their state of the art training facility."This is how we become good," says Carlsbad Fire Captain Scott Tucker. "This is our hallowed ground where we get to spend all the time, make the mistakes here, so we don't make them out there."The Carlsbad Safety Training Center spans four acres. It includes a four-story live burn tower, a two-story home, and a main street replica. It also has two shooting ranges, classrooms, and computer simulation rooms.The parking lot can also be used for driving simulations and tests."It's realistic training," says Carlsbad Police Captain Peter Pascual. "The officers can utilize what they learn in the training environment, out in the field."The shooting ranges are adaptable, letting agencies set up different scenarios. They can even drive cars into the range. "It allows us to get in the right frame of mind in how to survive and solve these problems in the field," says Pascual. "We try to create scenarios that are realistic and functional for the success of the officers in the field.""It allows us to get a good foundation in training and build on stuff that we normally don't get to do," says Tucker.Facility Manager Jason Kennedy says the complex tries to stay as modern as possible, always adding more ways to train."We're always looking forward, cause training is so dynamic," says Kennedy. "We're trying to look forward at what things are emerging in the environment."The facility has become so popular, other state and federal agencies have rented the facility from Carlsbad for their own training events.This year, 28 different agencies from around California and the rest of the United States have booked time to train in Carlsbad. Carnival Cruise Line announced Thursday that most of its remaining US-based cruises for 2020 have been canceled due to coronavirus concerns.The cruise line canceled all cruises originating from US ports except for those leaving Miami and Port Carnival during November and December. (KGTV) — Supporters and opponents of President Donald Trump gathered at the U.S.-Mexico border in Calexico Friday, ahead of the President's tour of a section of border barrier.Before the President touched down, opponents inflated a large "Baby Trump" balloon, which has become a symbol of the President's protesters around the country, outside the Gran Plaza Outlets in Calexico.Just a few miles away, supporters donning "Make American Great Again" hats and Trump flags gathered to welcome the President to town. Bulgarian authorities are investigating the rape and murder of an investigative reporter in the northern city of Ruse, the third journalist to have been killed in the EU this year.The body of 30-year-old Viktoria Marinova was found on Saturday near a pedestrian alley in an area with heavy vegetation, Bulgarian state media reported.Preliminary investigations showed the cause of death was blows to the head and suffocation.Bulgarian Interior Minister Mladen Mladenov described the murder as "exceptionally brutal" and said Marinova was raped before she was killed, according to state media. He said the country's top murder investigators had been sent to Ruse to work on the case.It's not clear if Marinova's murder was related to her journalistic work. They will be flying into McClellan-Palomar Airport from Houston, Texas.This is a joint-effort by the Helen Woodward Animal Center and Operation Pets Alive!, a non-profit that rescues animals displaced by natural disasters.Related: San Diego volunteers help homeless pups caught in TexasThis comes after 64 dogs and cats were taken in by the Rancho Santa Fe animal shelter last September following hurricane Harvey.The orphaned puppies will receive medical checks once in Carlsbad in hopes of finding their forever homes.
