SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This week the Honor Flight family is saying goodbye to beloved family member Arthur Smith, a World War II Veteran and the inspiration behind San Diego's Honor Flight chapter.Back in 2009, Arthur and his son Dave went to Washington D.C. with the Honor Flight Network. During WWII Arthur was assigned to the First Provisional Marine Brigade and was part of the U.S. invasion to take back the Island of Guam.“His service and the way he served, the selflessness, the individuals back in WWII and Korea and Vietnam, their country called and they were selfless about what they were going to do," said Dave. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Trump campaign is asking for a recount in Wisconsin and there could be other recounts before this election is over. But recounts rarely flip the result of an election.From 2009 to 2019, there were 5,778 statewide general elections, according to the non-partisan group FairVote. In that span there were 31 completed recounts.Only three of the 31 recounts flipped the outcome of the race, FairVote found. Those recounts were a Washington governor’s race in 2004, an auditor’s race in Vermont in 2006, and a 2008 race in Minnesota that made Al Franken a U.S. Senator.Deb Otis, a senior research analyst with FairVote, said in all three of these cases, the original margin heading into the recount was razor thin: less than .05 percent.“We generally see a shift in votes during recounts on the order of a few hundred votes or maybe 1000 votes,” said Otis. “The margin in Wisconsin right now is around 20,000 votes. We have not seen a statewide recount shift votes anywhere near 20,000.”The most memorable recount was in Florida in 2000, in the race between George W. Bush and Al Gore. That recount shifted the margin by 1,247 votes. It was a significant shift in a race decided by just 537 votes, but it was still not enough to flip the outcome.The record for a shift is 2,567 votes, which happened in Florida’s 2018 senate race won by Rick Scott, but it was also not enough to flip the outcome. 1423

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The son of artists, Steve Maloney says creating art has always been in his DNA."It makes you feel good, making art makes me feel good, really," said Maloney. The project he is most proud of is featured in the documentary Take Me Home Huey, which is being screened during San Diego's GI Film Festival. Produced by Los Angeles filmmakers Alicia H. Brauns and Christine N. Steele, the film documents Maloney's transformation of a Vietnam-era Medevac Huey Helicopter from a wounded warbird, shot down in combat in 1969, into a colorful sculpture with a mission to help veterans recover from Post-Traumatic Stress."What my purpose was to honor those 2.7 million or more American Vietnam veterans that never got a welcome home," said Maloney. Inspiration for the Huey sculpture came from Vietnam veterans themselves. Maloney interviewed several, listening to their stories, and learning what they felt while during the war. "What are you thinking about? Well, number one, probably your girlfriend, maybe your car, mom's apple pie."Maloney and the filmmakers were able to uncover the history of Huey 174, learning the names of surviving crew and two young soldiers killed during the shoot-down.The three survivors were reunited 50 years after their aircraft was shot down. "They almost wanted to hug it, for sure, they wanted to touch the cross, the medevac cross on the top. It just brought out their experiences, which they talked about," said Maloney. "The two pilots had a great feeling of guilt."Maloney says the project has helped Vietnam veterans cope with the traumas of war. Maloney is currently working on a book which will allow him to share more experiences not captured in the film, including the journey of Huey #174 as an art exhibition in various cities throughout the United States and the people he met along the way.The Huey sculpture is on display at the Palm Springs Air Museum. 1919
