SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Several trailers were set up at El Toyon Park in National City and will become a study site for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial, ran by UC San Diego.Drugmaker Johnson & Johnson is looking to enroll participants worldwide for phase three of its Janssen trial, including here in San Diego.UCSD will recruit the majority of the participants.The trial was scheduled to get underway on October 7th, but UCSD researchers now say they're looking at Friday as a start date."We hope to enroll about 2,000 people in San Diego, the study will be enrolling 60,000 people internationally," said Dr. Susan Little, a UCSD professor of medicine and principal investigator for the trial. "Eight Department of Defense trailers form the basis of our permanent vaccine site, vaccine clinic, in National City."Little said this will be a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to determine the vaccine's safety and efficacy."Does it reduce the frequency of COVID infection overall or the severity of COVID infection among study participants?" she said.Little said there is already a lot of data available from the past."This is the same vaccine vector that has been used for many other infectious diseases like HIV, Zika, Ebola," she said.Although the trial is open to all San Diego County residents who qualify, she said the focus would be on recruiting residents from the South Bay, which is why the clinic was set up in National City, instead of UCSD's La Jolla or Hillcrest locations."Communities of color have been harder hit in the sense they have higher rates of hospitalization, and many of them have higher rates of death, our hope was by placing the vaccine trial in a community that has higher rates of infection we could reach a more highly impacted community," she explained. "Those are populations that we hope will have a greater potential benefit from this vaccine."After concerns were raised over another trial that was later put on hold, UCSD worked with the Chicano Federation to ensure South Bay residents get the information they need to make an informed decision if they want to participate."We are putting safety as paramount for these studies, no study is going forward unless we are confident about the safety of the vaccine," said Little.The Janssen trial will be the third for UCSD to join. Now, researchers at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom are learning some mouthwashes can kill COVID-19 within 30 seconds, at least in a lab setting. The study found mouthwashes containing .07 percent of cetylpyridinium chloride showed promising signs of combating the virus, as well as those with ethyl lauroyl arginate. But while these mouthwashes killed the virus in the lab, the virus is continuously replicating in humans. But now, 95,000 San Diegans receiving Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will be able to apply for the CalFresh program (food stamps). “Individuals receiving SSI receives no more than 0 a month,” says Amanda Schultz Brocheo, with the San Diego Hunger Coalition. “For the majority, of SSI recipients, this all the money they have.”In San Diego, 1 in 11 older adults don’t have enough food to eat. “In some cases, we’ve heard of SSI recipients that will pull out a calendar and circle the days they are going to choose not to eat.”The San Diego Hunger Coalition says they are happy about the expansion but say the amount per day the is less than a day. “We determined that here in San Diego County the average CalFresh allotment is .07 a day.” This week also marks CalFresh Challenge Week. The organization encourages San Diegans to try living off a day for food. It’s meant to bring awareness to the food insecurities around the county. “We know that the CalFresh program is our strongest tool to for fighting hunger and also recognize that the current allotment is fairly small,” says Brocheo. “It makes it fairly difficult for people to live on that amount. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- This Christmas local chefs and volunteers gave the gift of gourmet meals for those in need. It was a two day process. “Just Call Us” Volunteers prepared the food, from scratch, before serving it to the homeless. The volunteers made enough to feed over 400 people. Early this afternoon, the chefs and volunteers delivered the food to three different shelters. The largest being the Alpha Project tent, in Downtown. “We all appreciate it. They all deserve a good meal,” says a staff member with the Alpha Project. Over a dozen volunteers donated their time at the Alpha Project. More volunteers visited Rachel’s Women’s Shelter and San Diego Center for Children. All of the items are donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Market. While many are dreading the drive, others have chosen to take the rails.Gary Green was visiting his friend in San Diego for the last few days. But he is making the trip back to Los Angeles on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. "The car is a painful experience. The 405 is obnoxious. The 101 is obnoxious.
