SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dreams of a degree take a backseat when you’re trying to find a safe place to sleep every night. As part of 10News’ Facing It Together initiative, we’re sharing a glimpse into life for homeless students and what’s being done to help them. “I’ve got to finish, that’s why I keep coming, I’ve got to finish,” said Brandon, a San Diego native who only wanted to be identified by his first name. Brandon started taking classes at City College three years ago in hopes of becoming a psychologist. “I love City, I love City, I feel so safe here and welcome here, I always have.” Six years sober, Brandon overcame a meth and heroin addiction. But he's been in and out of homelessness for several years. Complete Coverage: Facing It Together“Education will help me get out of this homeless situation, education will help my family, my kids included, get out of poverty.” Brandon spends more hours getting to and from school than inside the actual classroom. Living in Escondido, it's a two-hour bus commute each way. He and his dog are currently living in a shed with a bed made out of recycled materials. “I would love to have my own pad, that I can actually take a shower and wash dishes in a sink. Hot water, it’s been a while.” After surviving a suicide attempt in 2003, Brandon wants to help others struggling. And there are many. A 2018 study found 9 percent of university students were homeless in the last year. The figure was 12 percent for community college students. Stephanie Hernandez and her husband, both Palomar College students, became homeless after their landlord raised the rent. They spent a year and a half living in their car. “The biggest struggle was going to sleep at night and not knowing if you’d get woken up by the cops,” Hernandez said. “Having no job, having nothing, this being your home with no gas, and being stuck somewhere…it’s heart-shattering.” Hernandez was ready to quit until she confided in school employees, who told her about the campus food pantry. Palomar College helped Hernandez get a job and an emergency grant for a car expense. “I think we really addressed the food and nutrition part first; the homelessness thing is going to probably take a little longer.” Aiden Ely with Palomar College said the school has created a task force to look into safe overnight parking lots for students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health officials say 18 more people have died from flu-related illness in San Diego in the last week.San Diego's flu-death total for the season is now at 269 people. Officials said this season the deaths have ranged in people 1- to 101-years-old. Thirty-four of those deaths have been in individuals under the age of 65.At the same time last season, there were only 49 recorded flu-related deaths.RELATED: Here's when doctors say you should go to the hospital with the flu"Influenza deaths are very unfortunate, but they occur in higher numbers during a severe flu season," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Drive through any neighborhood in San Diego these days, and you’re bound to see homes decked out for the holidays. This time of year also can signal a slowdown in the real estate market - and an opportunity for buyers.Germaine LaValade took advantage, and is about to own his first home. He’s in escrow for a four-bedroom home in North Pacific Beach, listed for .17 million. LaValade, a software engineer, said a big reason the seller chose him was because the sale would close before the end of the year for tax purposes.“Because we are renters right now we didn’t have any house to sell to buy this one,” LaValade said.A motivated seller is just one of the advantages a homebuyer may have in these winter months - far removed from peak summer season. Another help - interest rates, which have been on the rise, tend to soften as activity slows nationwide.“We’re seeing a lot of prices are coming down from the all-time highs that they were,” said San Diego realtor Gary Kent. “We’re probably off as much as 5 percent from the peak, peak, peak of the market.”But prices are still high in San Diego County. In October, the median sale price was 0,000, up more than 5 percent from a year earlier.While activity is thought to slow, San Diego realtor Michelle Silverman said some of her best months have been in December. She said buyers get a little more leverage, while sellers still capitalize on low inventory. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Friends are expected to come together to remember the Navy sailor shot and killed while checking on an apparent stalled vehicle.A vigil for 21-year-old Curtis Adams will be held Saturday at Breakers Beach on Naval Station Coronado. Those attending will need valid military identification since the vigil is on-base.Adams was shot and killed on Interstate 15 near Mountain View in the early morning hours of Oct. 27. The Navy sailor was checking on a stopped car to see if the driver needed help, according to San Diego Police.RELATED: 561
