SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sunset Hills Elementary school in Rancho Pe?asquitos has been honored for having the top-ranked School Safety Patrol in the city.The program is a partnership between San Diego Unified School District, Poway Unified School District, and the San Diego Police Department. Students participate by helping serve as crossing guards before and after school. Officer David Valdez, who oversees the team at Sunset Hills and four other schools, says the students learn leadership, community service, and volunteerism. "I have a lot of fun with them," Valdez told 10News. "It's great seeing them develop over the course of the school year."About 90 schools participate in the progam, encompassing 2,000 student volunteers. Each student is eligible to apply for the top honor of being designated as the "Colonel". This year, Sunset Hills student Maddie Smith won. "It's a great feeling," she said. "WHen you help a kid during something, even if it's just a small act, it makes you feel really good inside."Smith has ambitious goals. "I want to be the President when I grow up and I feel like this is a great way to lead me up to that. I will learn how to be a great leader, teamwork, a good citizen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The man who received 2,000 of his dead father’s Social Security benefits was sentenced Monday to federal prison time.Abel Perez, 55, pleaded guilty to accepting the benefits after his father died in 1997.Prosecutors said Perez would forge his father’s signature on a check payable to himself and divert the funds for his personal use.Perez admitted he knew he was not entitled to the funds which were put into the account.“The Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General is pleased to see that this crime, which affects every individual relying on the Social Security Trust Fund for their retirement, was taken seriously and punished appropriately in this case,” said Robb Stickley, the Special Agent in Charge of the San Francisco Field Division, which is responsible for Southern California.  “We hope that this sentence sends a message that it is the responsibility of every individual in our society to protect their own retirement savings, and ensure that a loved one’s death does not go unreported.”A judge sentenced Perez to one year and one day in federal prison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community of Barrio Logan welcomed residents to shop in the streets after months of coronavirus’ impact. Saturday, Aug. 4, the “Walk the Block” event debuted. Local businesses got permits to move service outdoors to the sidewalk, and the event celebrated the community’s resurgence of business with food, specialty items and music.Business owners like Stephanie, who runs Dreamers and Hustlers Company, a clothing shop with items branded toward the namesake, said the past few months have been hard, but she’s confident Barrio Logan shops will bounce back.“Even during these times we figure out ways we can pick ourselves up and get going again,” she said.Edgar Flores said his shop, Maxa Market, sells products made by local small businesses and entrepreneurs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video from a Clairemont church shows a woman with a gun in one hand and her baby in the other, prosecutors said.The video was played in court Friday as the preliminary hearing started for Anna Conkey.Conkey is accused of walking into Sunday services at Church Tsidkenu in April and making threats while holding her 10-month-old son.Pastor Benjamin Wisan testified Conkey pointed the gun at parishioners and her own baby. Wisan was on stage and tried to calm everyone by telling them the weapon was a Taser. A 911 call prosecutors say Conkey made to report herself was played for the jury."Hi, yes, there's a woman at a church and she's saying she's going to blow up the foundation of the church,” said the person in the 911 call. RELATED: Woman tackled to the ground after showing up at San Diego church with handgunChurchgoers tackled Conkey and held her until officers arrived. The baby was not injured. Police later determined the weapon was not loaded. Wisan said Conkey had disrupted services weeks before the incident. He had tried to set up a meeting with her but it did not happen. Conkey pleaded not guilty to several felony counts including child abuse, making criminal threats, and a false report of a bomb. A judge will determined if the case will go to trial. 1312

The NRF says an "estimated 147.8 million U.S. consumers [are] expected to participate, up from 134.3 million last year, according to the annual survey released today."This includes both in-store and online shopping.This year had the shortest shopping window between Thanksgiving and Christmas, leaving shoppers nervous.Jessica Ramirez said she was so busy working she could only start shopping Saturday. She said the family had been to a few stores that day and she will get as much done as possible in the final countdown before Christmas.Dana Giusti was eating a candy cane while she shopped in Best Buy, saying her sugar fix was staving off anxiety about finishing up Christmas shopping and wrapping all the presents for her family.In Mission Valley, the Target parking lot was filled with lines of cars.
